@brent_w: I agree on that being a huge irritation for me as well, but didn't have the same reaction. The build up and the rest of the execution sold me that part. I'm not going to tell you it should for you as well. I'm just curious because you're obviously not just being flippant.
Drama and emotion in games is tough to pull off. Only this gen are we seeing realtime 3d graphics that can even show (realistic)characters with semi realistic emotion. While I can understand your reaction, I'm still seeing this as a good step away from the GOW and Halo (which have their place as well). COD 4 is no SOTC or Silent hill, but it did emotionally hit me which was a bit surprising for a 'war shooter'.
And yes I would suggest normal, I used to play games on hard, but found that while doable it usually just breaks up the flow of the game more, which it sounds like this did for you?

Ehardergardens

You know as I read and think about why I don't like CoD4 as much as others seem to It might be because I beat it on Veteran. Which was very poorly done.
.
When you come to CoD4 and ask it for a 'challenge' it instead presents you with 'frustration'.

There is a big difference from the excitement of:

*death* "Man, that was hard, but I can do better next time."
*win* "Wow, I got through that by the skin of my teeth."

and

*death* "What the hell, there was nothing I could have done there!"
*win* "The only way you can win is by trying over and over until you get lucky!"
.
I'm thinking I might have more fun if I played through on an easier difficulty, whichever one they had in mind when they balanced the games mechanics.
.
Any suggestions? (Normal?)

brent_w

I'm suprised at Pain and Flows inclusion?

Flow is nice, a lot of style, I thought of it more as a nice execution of a sixaxis demo. I didn't play it very far though as the control orientation was non intuitive for me. (but somehow Lair's was???)
but Pain?
Is it really that fun? the premise seemed sort of one note, and the art style looked really unappealing to me. But then i don't really like jackass the tv series either. It reminded me of the fake tv series OW my Balls! or whatever it was called in that movie Idiocracy.

@brent_w: story wise COD4 is fair, but it's all in execution, and as a movie it's very possible it would be considered only mediocre(probably), but because it did push the storytelling and emotional impact of this genre it's impressive. Half life is just about aliens invading.
Bioshock is just about fighting mutants and power mad villains. Their plots/stories aren't all that exceptional, their storytelling is.

And I consider COD4 a lot less cheesy and corny than Halo 3 or Gears of War. All in all it's a step in the right direction in maturing the medium and a step they didn't even have to make to be successful. Games still have a ways to go to meet the same merits as movies (alhough i can think of a handful of games that are more subtle and thoughtful than a slew of movies). Games however have their own merits that movies do not.

Ehardergardens

I did, however, feel like Halo 3 not even making a runner up on the list was a real travesty. It's a great, fun game and adding things like Forge and replays, coupled with online tracking and uploading was just icing on the cake. Overhyped to be sure, but it delivers on almost all accounts.

ビッグ ボス

My friends and I had a big debate on game of the year and The Orange Box won by a whisker. But with the amount of quality titles that came out THAT year, the ambassador really did spoil us. COD4 was damn near perfect at what it did, it just becomes a question of whether you like what it did or not. The short single player is perfect because it never gets boring and does seem to be replayable for the sheer joy of replaying it. Normally I despise war based fps but I adore this game, it really is magnificent.

TearsandScreams

@Brian Crecente: I really hate to post so much. Sorry.

First, I have to say, I love the gameplay, I love the ability to shoot through thing walls, I loved targeting for a C-130, firing stingers, etc.

The story is what killed that game for me.

It was so formulaic the entire time I was playing the game I felt like I was watching a war movie I had already seen before.

I actually laughed when the British missions added the "token black guy" with his stereotypical "token black guy attitude".

The missile silo level felt unbelievably out of place, it belonged in a James Bond type film, where some suspension of disbelief is to be expected.
"15 minutes to enter the launch codes and stop the missile!"
That has been done in more popcorn flicks and made for TV movies than I can count.

And the ending I saw coming so far away its not funny.

I remember thinking:
"By the time the game ends I just know that guy is gonna get a tragic death scene."

To be honest, the only thing in the entire game that caught me off guard was the scene after the helicopter crash.

Other issues:
*They put no effort into the difficulty modes.
Making all of the enemies lethal snipers with an SMG from 5 times its accurate range is not the proper way to make a game challenging, its just unrealistic.
Nothing killed my immersion quite as much noticing that every AI's first shot had near perfect accuracy, no mater the weapon, no mater the range.

*Several times I was accosted by a bug in which the AI's will actually shoot you before they've actually come around a corner. I don't mean through the wall, I mean the muzzle flash of the gun appeared out of thin air in a location which the enemy had not yet even reached. (It appears that their AI simulation is not quite in step with their rendering.) Its like seeing lag IN single player! When playing on the hardest difficulty this can be rather frustrating even to the most patient of players.

*The friendly AIs were incomparably frustrating. They apparently enjoyed jumping in front of my sniper bullets, pushing me out of cover and into enemy fire, and although I'm not quite certain, I'm pretty sure a few times they actually shot me in the back.
And the enemy AIs apparently know you are the Hero, because it quickly became painfully obvious that they will only fire at friendly AIs when they can't see you. (Another immersion breaker)

*The CoD4 Checkpoint System is a nightmare of poor planing.
I coulden't believe my eyes when, in the same level, they literally had 2 checkpoints at either end of an empty hallway, and then later had you hold off multiple waves of 100+ enemies with no checkpoints to be found.

Ok, I could go on but I should really stop before this post gets any longer.
.
To answer your last question, I've beaten it on Veteran, except for the Mile High Club, that kicked my ass. And also played through moves of the game on Normal as well.

brent_w

I enjoyed (post-patch) STALKER more overall but COD4 was certainly the boldest and most poignant game last year in terms of story. SPOILER: Waking up in the helicopter after the nuclear strike was an intense moment, but when your vision fades out and you realized what just happened...well, I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me. I thought the ending was amazing, too.

Silverbackne

I agree totally, COD4 all the way. The 'cinematic' bits we are all talking about were genuine immersive storytelling IMO. Most games still resort to taking the player out of the game in cut scenes and to me that always ruins the feel, no matter how good the acting/writing/graphics. And usually only graphics are good in most games cutscenes.

Fair enough. Can't say I agree, but whatever. That's what makes horse races. Part of it may be that I feel FPSs are derivatives at a level which other genres simply don't reach. Speaking specifically about Call of Duty 4 though, I felt that the game itself was a little too scripted...at points I felt less like a player in a game than an actor simply waiting to read their lines. The story also lost something once you moved out of the Middle East. Honestly, the idea that the Russians were the masterminds behind everything was so utterly cliché that the narrative and scenery lost nearly all of its bite after the level "Shock and Awe".

A good game to be sure, but it wouldn't have appeared in my list of contenders for Game of the Year.

Nightshift_Nurse

COD4 is a great choice. I know everybody hates Halo, but I think it was much more innovative, but I like the weapon balance in COD much better (i.e. starting guns and grenades actually feel effective against almost anything you can pick up on the map...not as many nerfed guns (unless you are picking them just for XP)...keeping the playing field more level.) I just wish COD had the save replay stuff like Halo...Oh well IW has plenty of things they can do with their next sequel, like adding these features to an already outstanding game. May I suggest that next time around they do a Vietnam themed game, I've read that all the 'Nam games have pretty much sucked, but IW could make a kick-ass "COD-Nam" if they wanted to, plus with all the political complexities that made that war seem so tragic, it could make a great single player expierence, if done tastefully, and IW has touched on some potentially touchy subjects with at least COD 2 and 4, so they would seem to be able to overcome this.

RonJeremy4Pres

I absolutely agree with you on COD4. The SP game delivers the type of emotionally compelling "movie" moments that I would expect from a well made film. But unlike a movie, the FPS format allows for a level of immersion into the characters and story that isn't possible in a passive format like a movie.

Infinity Ward produced something really special with COD4 that goes beyond graphics and game mechanics and touches on the potential of games as a storytelling medium that could rival film. I hope other developers take note.

rawg

I liked COD4 just as much as the next guy, but IMO it's no game of the year. Uncharted was far more entertaining and far less monontonous. COD4 online is far too crippled in too many ways (on the PS3) to keep me coming back. I shouldn't be frustrated when trying to join friends online. Warhawk, to me, is ten times more enjoyable than COD4 simply because I can get in and actually play a game without having to wait 10 minutes to connect to a server.

Machines

I've been playing Shadow of the Colossus a lot lately and I realized that the platforming aspects of Uncharted remind me most of that game. Even more so than Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider, which are the two games it is most often compared to (excepting Gears of War, which is similar in it's shooting & cover mechanics). There is only one real difference between the platforming in Shadow of the Colossus and the platforming in Uncharted: in SotC, the "platforms" move, and you have a limited grip, which adds a great deal of strategy to it. That's about it. I'd like to see more games with that sort of platforming mechanic. You know... hold on, climb, jump, grab, pull up, shimmy, etc.

baked ham

I really disagree with it being the "most entertaining" game of the year.

I played it through, and it was a great game, don't get me wrong.
But IMO, it was also every bit as overhyped as Halo 3.

There are a number of flaws in CoD4 that people just seem to overlook and ignore, I really don't get the obsession ...

And the storyline and "film" elements you seem to salute I found absolutely rediculous.
.
Playing CoD4 felt just like watching your standard action movie.
It has all the war movie cliches, right down to the infuriatinly cheesy
and unrealistic "you have 15 minutes to stop the missile" ending ...
.
IMO Bioshock and Galaxy both proved more entertaining.
I've not yet had the chance to play Uncharted.

brent_w
