And I totally didn't notice that the 80GB PS3 was an at-risk item. I'll check at work tomorrow and confirm if anyone's still talking about it then.

@ceilingFANBOY: gets shrinkage on Saturday: It's quite pricey to purchase a new hard drive. To be honest, I think if they can just find a satisfactory sweet spot for an internal stock size, that'd be good. 80GB was pretty decent for a stock size, and then just utilize the PS3's networking capabilities to stream stuff or just have external HDD's on stand-by. Not saying a 320GB HDD would be nice, but yeah.

I have the 80GB version. It has "Limited Edition" printed on the damn box. The "discontinuation" coming as a surprise to anyone is...well, surprising.

And Hard drive size is irrelevant. They're standard laptop HDDs. If the same system gets re-released with a bigger HDD and you feel screwed, then there's something wrong with you - it's like getting upset that a bundle gets released with a second controller or some other trivial crap you can go out and buy yourself.

No, it sounds like we're pretty much on the same page. Normally I wouldn't even consider a console with a failure rate like the 360 has, but it's looking more and more like the lesser of the evils. Every time I'm about to buy a PS3, they discontinue it and offer no good alternative. I have a Wii, it's alright, but a totally different market. It's starting to look like if I want to get current gen non-PC games I'll have to get a 360 - but I can't bring myself to do it yet with the reliability issues, so I'm stuck in last-gen. I have never in my lifetime (starting around Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision) seen a console generation fail so hard and it hurts.

i have an 80 gig ps3. i still have a bunch of ps2 games and even some playstation games. how many of them have i played since switching to the ps3? two or three every once in awhile. would i care if i couldn't play them anymore? not really. its the same with xbox and gamecube games that i still have. nice that i can play them on the 360 and the wii, but i wouldn't cry if i couldn't anymore. been there, done that. nice for nostalgia once in awhile, but i'm more interested in the new stuff. and if i really really wanted it that bad, old consoles are always available cheap on ebay. hell, somebody recently gave me an atari 2600 and a bunch of games. fun to play space invaders and stuff like that on one again, but i find i lose interest in them pretty quickly anymore.

Why do people assume that the people who have yet to buy a PS3 aren't planning on buying one or are not serious about getting one? I like the PS3 and the games that it has. Also, if I had the money in hand I would buy one immediately. I'm just waiting for a backwards compatible model, with at least 40 gig HDD, for $399. I might even pay $450 for a PS3 with the above specs and a 60-80 gig. I love Ratchet and Clank, Ninja Gaiden, and the Tekken series. I also want to try Resistance and DMC4. I just don't have the money. Hence why I spend all of my time trying to find scholarships online. I'm looking to free up the money I have in my savings account so that I can buy a PS3 and get an education at Carolina.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, or just being bitter and taking jabs at both camps, but your comment resonated with me.

I intended on picking up an 80gb (mostly for the B.C.) over the summer, but now Sony's taken that option away from me.

Sure, my 360 is loud, and I'm on my second system due to RROD, but MSFT's mantra about "consumer choice" actually wins in this instance. I'm willing to put up with a few annoyances in the short term knowing that Microsoft is, for the most part, making me whole in the end. Sony, however, bit off more than it could chew with an overly expensive launch console that could do it all, and as a would-be late adopter I have to suffer for it as they pare down the system rendering it half the product it originally was.

I hope Sony has a few more tricks up their sleeve other than MGS4, b/c they may have just lost another customer.

Stop bitching about SKUs people. Look at the PS2. It has had a dozen SKUs easily. If not more. People like us (on Kotaku) are the only ones that even notice. It's the multiple SKUs at one time that confuses people. Plus, the idiots working at the store trying to "explain" the differences need to stop. The people you are talking to don't even know what USB is...don't tell them there are 2 in one and 4 in the other. It doesn't fucking matter. You are confusing them, not Sony.

And the 120GB HDD that they sell separately for nearly $200. 20GB notwithstanding, the only other real difference is the BC between the PS3 model. WiFi is standard as is HDMI, and the HDD is non-proprietary. BC is the only real difference as far as core specs go.

Rumble is a non-issue because controller revisions do happen. So in short, people are blowing this issue out of proportion; chances are, most weren't interested in the machine and making up more reasons to stay away.

As long as they don't pull a PSP-esque shunning of early adopters, I'm fine. Don't rule out software BC for PS2 games either though. They've hired emulation engineers before the system launched. Given that PS1 emulation was completed when the slim PS2 launched, you can bet BC will pop up in a firmware update.

They can say otherwise, but we know how credible PR words really are.

Ya know I owned a psp till last week (bought at lauch), and I sold it because sony seperated the user base. I would've used skype, and I owned the chat headset. 3 years of lack luster games, expensive umd's, and not till recent the playstation store (lacking alot). I wanted a ps3 for blue-ray, linux, and media streaming to psp. Problem for me was when am I going to be able to buy the final ps3 hardware? Rumble, b.c. (I don't mind either way, but again don't split the user base), plug-ins, hard drive.
Personally I have greater hopes of M.S. coming out with a handheld that can stream stuff, and has good games. Blue ray seems the clear winner, and I'm one of those who sold his hd-dvd player last week as well, but I think I'll take my high def in downloads for a bit, and wait for sony to blue light their next discontinued piece of hardware.

I work at a Best Buy in Canada, in the games section. A couple of weeks ago, our Sony rep came in and informed me that the PS3s we had would be all we would be getting for the next couple of months, because they had no more in the warehouse stock. Didn't say anything about not making them at all though. One thing about it being removed from the website... a lot of times, when something popular is going to be unavailable for a while, it gets temporarily removed from the website (for example, Wii DDR Hottest Party bundle is nowhere to be found on the Best Buy Canada website right now).

@RRoD: That's true. The original US 20/60 Gigs had the Emotion Engine built into it. Current 80Gs software emulate the Emotion Engine. The 60Gig with the EE can play ANY PS1/PS2 games exactly like you would on the PS1/PS2, the 80G's software emulation can play about 95%+ of games, some with small graphical/framerate errors. Something to note is that European and Australian 60Gs run on software emulation, so if you can find a 60G then make sure it's a US version or it'll be the same as an 80G for backwards compatibility. You will have a damn hard time finding a 60G nowadays for a decent price but they are better for playing your old games. I use software B/C and it doesn't worry me that much, and I haven't found a game I can't play.... Yet.

regardless of what sony releases in the future, i am happy with what i paid for, and and what i got... i've definitely gotten a lot of the value out of it already, with out new HDTV.

i just hope that the pricepoint will go down soon, or whatever it is thats going to make everyone else who wants one to take that LEAP.. and just get one.

i swear, after waiting so long to get it, it was SO worth it to actually buy one.

the free demos alone are more then enough to keep a guy entertained for weeks... and the best part about the demos is you don't need to go take out the disks and put in new disks, i love that!

anyways, plus motorstorm is actually a really fun racing game, and online is really easy, i can't imagine live being any easier, really.

anyways... hopefully if you guys want the backwards compatibility, then stop complaining, and rush out and go buy an 80gb while you still can... if you don't care enough to get a ps3 right now, than DEAL with it. seriously. the whining is retarded. not everyone really cares about it.

my 80gb has it, but i'll probably use it 1-5 times EVER. thats all i've ever used my ps2 for ps1 games.. its a cool feature, but really, its nothing.

This is troubling news for a few reasons. First off, when something is discontinued, it should at least get a price cut. If Sony did that with the 60 gig, they should do it with the 80 gig. Second of all, what will exactly replace this SKU as the more competent/fully featured one? Having the 40 gb model out there as the only SKU is not a good move, especially for people who have huge ps2 collections and don't want to deal with USB related hassles and avoid hubs for when they play Rock Band or whatever.

I really hope that there is a 120 gig SKU in the pipeline, because then there will finally be something that competes head on with the X360 elite in terms of features. If it has a pack-in game like Uncharted or Resistance, then that's even better. I also hope this 120 gig SKU is 399.99 and forces Microsoft to stop overpricing the Elite at 449.99

@PoorPensive: Yeah, the bad news, they still look horrendously fuzzy, and have borders, at least PS1 games do (on a 60Gb software B/C model anyway). They do look slightly better, but I wish I still had my imported PS2 so I could play my US games with my old saves.

If anyone thinks that B/C is coming to the 40G versions any time soon, sorry for the bad news but it's VERY unlikely that they'll add B/C to the 40G at all, I know it says software, but there's actually a modified Graphics Synthesizer from the PS2 that's used in the 60/80gs that's not present in the 40 gig versions. Hardware B/C models have both the Graphics Synth. and the EE. Sorry people, if it was JUST software it would be installed with the XMB and wouldn't cost anything to put it in the new systems. Might happen in time, but if 'software' models that have some of the semiconductors have a hard time on some games, imagine what they'll be like without them. Get a B/C model while you still can, and don't hold your breath on getting your 40G to play PS2 games.

#1, BC is being blown out of proportion. Casuals made the PS2 what it is, they could care less.
The very few hardcore (and Sony haters - very obvious to spot out people who never wanted one in the first place) are completely irrelevant and Sony and the rest of us could care less about your inconveniences in switching the plugs whenever you want to play a PS2 game. If you have so many consoles for this to be an issue, you have money, get a bigger shelf. Sony owes you NOTHING, especially not free controllers lol.

In all seriousness, I, along with a great majority of gamers, am completely tired of all these different SKUs flooding the market.

Xbox 360:
Core System, Old Premium System, Elite, Arcade Pack, New Premium System w/HDMI, and the rumored Xbox "Ultimate".

PS3:
20GB Model, 40GB Model (black), 60GB Model, 80GB Model, and now the rumored 120GB Model.
-I didn't list the white 40GB based on the fact that I'm simply arguing the numerous systems with different hardware configurations.

Thank you Nintendo. Now please, Microsoft, Sony; can we stop with this plethora of different consoles? I don't even want to hear any BS about giving the consumer a "choice". You know what? I remember when the PSX and PS2 were as expensive as hell, and yet they managed to sell like hotcakes. It seems that the a large number of potential buyers (including myself) are hesitant to pick up a new console, for fear that it will become obsolete within a very short time. This is the main reason I haven't picked up a PS3 yet. Would I like one? Sure! I'm just not going to purchase one until I am confident that I am getting the one that I want.

I learned this lesson when I bought my 360. At the time, it was the one I wanted. Essentially, it was the best SKU. Then along comes the Elite. Damn. I just bought an HDTV and would LOVE to have the option of an HDMI hook-up, not to mention the fact that the space on my 20GB HDD was wearing thin. I'm glad I didn't buy one though, because shortly there-after, Microsoft starts releasing all premium systems with HDMI. WTF? The Elite doesn't seem so "elite" anymore now that one of the two things that makes it special can be had on another SKU. Throw on a $60 120GB HDD from eBay and you have yourself a white elite.

I dearly miss the days when all consoles were the same, save for a different color pallet or a slightly re-designed chasis (which generally happens much later in the lifespan of a console, as history has shown.)

Sony, please, remove these different versions and just release a unified setup that has all of the features of the original 60GB. I promise if you do, you will have one more buyer right here.

@ssjmichael: I think they could kep that as the game that is bundled with it. While the game is popular, it doesn't move units as well as Resistance or Call of Duty 4, but it is good enough to be seen as a perk. You don't want to bundle your best games because then you are losing sales, but you want the game to be good enough that people will want it. I don't necessarily think that they are always going to bundle the game with the PS3, but they could.

What I don't get is why there's all sorts of extras. Chrome, Wi-Fi card, etc, but backwards compatability, even software, is left out? It's like Sony said "Well, it seems like we're giving them a decent deal now, a PS2, plus all the features of a PS3, for only about $400, why not take out some of the features the buyers plan to use, and leave the fancy stuff in to encourage people to buy it!"

Ya, good idea. Keep the chrome, it looks nicer with it, so more people will want to buy it. Keep a wi-fi card, nobody will buy it if they HAVE to use Ethernet. But remove backwards compatibility from the firmware, all PS3 buyers are hardcore Sony fans, already have a PS2 probably, or a new one is cheap, and who knows, maybe people will actually try the other hundred gajillion features the console has while they are enjoying their time not playing their collection of PS2 games!

@JUBEI21: Actually dude, Sony really doesn't have all that much money to blow. All their divisions across the board aren't really doing that well. While they're definitely not in any danger of bankruptcy, they're not sitting on huge piles of cash like Nintendo ($5 bil. US back in 2000; I wouldn't be surprised if it's much, much more by now). Remember, that's not the company's net value or even their operating profit; that's just the amount of cold hard cash money they have on hand, free to do whatever they want with it.

Here's the long and the short: Nintendo can afford very magnanimous gestures with little to no effect on their bottom line. Sony, not so much.

This is coming from someone with a decent amount of money invested in Sony stock. I've had a lot of ups and downs, and now I'm breaking even. I'm really hoping that the WB/Blu-ray deal jumpstarts the stock price, as Sony is the weakest link in my portfolio right now.

Not exactly. The 20GB and 60GB have two PS2 components, the Emotion Engine (the two vector units and MIPS processor) and the RSX (graphics synthesizer). This is what allowed nearly full hardware-based backwards compatibility. The 80GB has only the RSX but no Emotion Engine, which mean all the work done by the EE is now emulated by the PS3 hardware, however the graphics chip (RSX) is still needed even in this supposed software emulation.

The 40GB has neither the EE or the RSX.

I just had a thought: with all of the different SKUs that the PS3 has had, it has had to change manufacturing several times at least. While things will eventually become more streamlined, wouldn't this cause some difficulty/expense in manufacturing?

The 360 has had to institute certain changes too, and I wonder how that has affected streamlining and cost of manufacturing. While it hasn't changed SKUs drastically, MS has added a new SKU and made changes to existing SKUs (motherboard and HDMI in particular).

While Nintendo just keeps churning out GC+Wiimotes and buying up harems left and right ...

I have an original 60gb model. Backwards compatibility and the rarity of it, and the now discontinued 60gb fully loaded model is why I keep using my 360 HD-DVD player and buying HD-DVD's even though Blu-Ray won.

I have a 2yr replacement plan on the unit, but I don't want to wear out the drive on my 60gb and risk having to swap it for one that doesn't have backwards compatibility.

Anyone else thinking the same?

Even if you have people paying to mail their controller for a replacement, what does Sony do with all the Sixaxis controllers? You're asking a bit much, to suggest that they ought to give out free Dual Shock 3's. It'd be a humongous investment for them, all to give some people a luxury? This isn't like wrist straps and controller jackets, which are inexpensive and prevent damaging accidents. This isn't like extending the warranty on the 360 due to an out of control rate of failure. You're just asking for a free luxury because you want it. It's simply not sensible.

And besides, I never even miss the rumble feature when playing my PS3. I guess it'd be nice to have it, but it's ridiculous to say Sony fails because they didn't include, and even more ridiculous to say they fail for not providing that luxury to everyone for free.

I think Sony has officially lost their goddamn minds. If Sony doesn't have some model with backwards compatibility on shelves when I finally crack and buy a PS3, then it will be a used model (hopefully the 60 GB if I can still find one) and Sony will not see a dollar of my money from the hardware. Remember when Kaz Hirai said they were discontinuing the 60 GB model in favor of the 80 GB because 'multiple SKUs confuse the consumer'? Now that the white PS3 is coming over to the States, your system has had at least five of them now, and you keep taking away stuff that consumers want rather than giving them more compelling reasons to adopt your hardware. Talked to my sister about this (works in MD). She mentioned something i found somewhat odd. The 80 GB version is on it's way out. However, she stated that her particular store was going to be getting shipments of the 60GB version back in. No idea if her management knows what the hell they are talking about, but to me it would be great. My PS3 is a 60 and if something did happen to it and i had to replace it on my PRP, i would feel cheated with any of the other versions.

Goddammit... I was about to buy a PS3 and they killed off all the hardware BC models. Now I was just watching for a reasonable price drop on non-crippled models and they're pulling them? Leaving only the choice between overpriced and deficient, but neither with even software BC.

Ok. Now I get it. I understand why so many people would rather buy a console that drops dead every few months.

Well, I still can't say I've played the whole PS2 catalog yet... no time like the present!

@Ignatius: I heard the 360 has like 17 SKUs, PC about 34567823 SKUs, and the Wii with 0.5. When you take those numbers into consideration, the PS3's 5 SKUs aren't that much. When home comes out, you will be able to connect all the SKUs of the PS3 together and do realtime photon-tracing on your PSP over your Sony VAIO so if you do the math, you really only have one SKU of the PS4. It's all really very DS3licious! OMFG I need sleep.... what were we talking about?

Hmmmmmmm, I am going to be disappointed with Sony if they pull all PS3 with backward compatibility out. It's going to turn away a number of late adopters that owns the PS2, and doesn't want to spend $500+ on a PS3. In the next six months either they release BC through software OR they release two new skus @ 160GB in the current $399 price and drop the 40GB to $299 both packing in dual shock 3. The 160 will feature PVR capabilities and also launch with the new video download service.

And the wii wrist strap remote thing was way overblown. It took a full grown man standing on the strap and another guy ripping at the remote a lot of effort to break one at work. It was no easy feat to do.

Nintendo just did the nice thing and replaced everyones straps free of charge, thats all. Then because they figured the American public is a safety scissor using American public (after seeing all the wii-mote injuries), they introduced the safety rubber jacket.

Actually, haha, I kind of feel insulted now that I realize Nintendo thought I was too retarded to use their product until they wrapped it in foam and made it so it couldn't leave my hand, since obviously I play like a spaz and I'm prone to hucking my remotes at TV's and walls for no reason.

It would be nice if they had official Playstation 3 hard drives just to eliminate any confusion, as long as they make it well known that you don't have to buy the Sony hard drives. The cost difference from 20GB to 40GB probably isn't enough to justify putting the 20GB hard drive in there anymore. I'm sure there are reasons they choose the seemingly random ass hard drive sizes that they choose.

This will be interesting if there's no updated bundle to replace the 80.

In my own little world, 2 of my friends have expressed interest in the PS3 but neither want the "gimped" model. Would they actually use the BC features? Probably not. But knowing they'd have the "crappy" version is enough to keep them away if the 40 is their only choice. If they ever make the jump, it will be an eBay purchase for 60's.

Now I know this isn't how everyone thinks, and I do think it's a little narrow minded, but I have to wonder how many people hold on their purchase b/c of that little $10-20 part Sony left out?

Someone posted that they sold their PS2 to fund th PS3, so to that person the B/C thing is important. But to those who have PS2's, and that's many people, the price of the PS3 and its game lineup trumps B/C in terms of importance. I am not a fan of Sony's strategy here, but you guys are making this bigger than it really is. the PS2 is still for sale, and will most likely drop in price to 99 dollars. Drop the PS3 to 299, and gamers can either get a PS3 and PS2 for 399 total, or just buy one system and keep a little cash. If I were Sony, that's how I would advertise it. PS3 on the big HDtv, PS2 in the bedroom or in the SUV for the kids. Wasn't there something about the PS2 being shrunk down even further a few months ago?

my point especially hinges on the fact that wi-fi could also be sold as an accessory, a la the 360, albeit for a fairer price. its not like sony frowns on selling accessories by any means.

@slomo788: youre prolly right about the 20 GB bleeding them, now that i look back at it. and yeah, increasing drive capacity, i figure, prolly isnt that big of a cost factor for them; i still wonder how much of it has to do with just unifying/streamlining supply lines, i.e.: the goal might be to move 120 GB's down the road as the sole SKU/format, so why not pan off all the lesser capacities as "limited editions" of sorts and hope for those off-and-on sales spikes theyve seen. Just a theory.

The hardware has to include PS2-hardware. The PS2 GPU is included in the 80GB PS3 for backwards compatibility. It's removed from the 40GB to make the console cheaper.
