Wii's first party games are the only ones worth getting with a few exceptions like Resident Evil 4. I was looking at games with my brother at Best Buy and he asked me, "When are some real games going to come out for Wii?" Meaning substantial RPGs and worthwhile multiplayer shooters. For those two genres I prefer PC anyway.

The only reason attach rate is as high as it is, is the only way to buy one is a bundle with 3-6 games. It's pretty easy to sell games when you are forced to buy them with the system.

Yeah, it matters. Because once Nintendo blows it's wad with it's big three to six franchises, that's it... There's nothing left besides SEQUELS to those franchises.

Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft pull in money long term from licensing more games. Nintendo, on the other hand, does not.

Plus, one Arcade game (TMNT). Although there are a lot of great games on 360, I got through them with rentals. Great games like Bioshock, COD4, and Portal.

So much to my own surprise I am actually on pace to purchase more Wii games than 360 games. Although there is a lot more titles of interest I see this year for PS3 and 360 than I do for Wii, but who knows. After Mario Kart, the Wii lineup sure does dry up faster than Molly Ringwalds career though. I hope they have a lot of things lined up for E3.

Although at this time last year we were already well aware of Mario and Metroid, and right now I'm not aware of anything coming to the Wii Fall of 08'. Trouble ahead?

I own 17 games if you include crossbow trainer and Wii Sports. 45 games if you include VC games. Considering the only next gen consoles I have are the Wii and the Wii (waiting for 360 to become better constructed and reasonably priced), I think the Wii is fine. I had in total 38 xbox games from last gen if that helps at all. In all honesty money is scarce I hardly get any games and I know alot of my wii games were cheap and decently fun. I have beaten 7 of them btw.

@DON! KING!: As of October Resident Evil 4 had shipped 1 Million units. Zack & Wiki didn't sell well because Capcom failed to effectively market the game. On the other hand Guitar Hero III has sold extremely well on the Wii despite the problems with mono sound. What I'm trying to say is that third party games can and do sell well on the Wii regardless of quality. That is to say that the Wii is more than a Wii Sports machine.

I don't know, I don't see a problem with the Japanese attach rate, especially since it doesn't include VC titles or the coming WiiWare stuff. And the system is still very young compared to the DS or even the 360.

The video game market was dying in Japan before the DS hit it big, with the Wii following... it's not like these numbers would even be surprising just a few years ago.

Wii in Japan may have a problem, but the attach rate for Wii in Europe and North America looks pretty healthy. I only own 4 games (not including the pack-in), but I used to be a WoW raider, so I really didn't have time for more games because of my "job".

If I was Nintendo I'd be putting more Wii's on American and European shelves as opposed to Japan after reading these numbers.

There is NO way the Wii attach rate is 6.9 games per console in North America.

As for me, I have 11 Wii games (excluding Wii Sports), compared to 13 for PS3 and 33 for 360.

As for Japan, yeah, it's pathetic. Something has to give at some point, because 3rd parties are going to lose a bucket of money if they keep doing anything of substance on the Wii.

Since I never before felt a need to count them i'm noticing that i've got quite an expanding library. Can't understand the people coming here and listing 3-4 titles I mean its not like you're the uninformed masses, a simple search can reveal all the quality titles the Wii has for those who care, which they seemingly don't( or maybe you rent instead of buy)this then begs the question of why do you own the console in the first place if you're not going to buy anything for it. It like bringing a horse to water but instead of not being able to make him drink it the horse absolutely refuses to drink and later dies of thirst and utters a final phrase "there was no water"

I don't own any other console and I'm pretty happy with what the Wii has available. Yes, there's a lot of crap, but I don't buy it (and there are generally lots of crappy games, regardless of platform). The only thing I really wish I could have is Rock Band, but it isn't worth the price of admission. I do hope that Mass Effect eventually gets ported to the PC, because I would like to at least try it out.

I would love to snap up Radiant Dawn, but screw Nintendo!

Frankly I haven't been impressed with the Wii games, I regret it's purchase and would like to be owning a 360 or PS3. The only games that truly shone was SMG.

I've been putting my video game time into PC games such as Team Fortress, WoW and Oblivion and I can see myself becoming a PC gamer predonently.

Including Wii Sports, I counted 15 off the top of my head. I only have a Wii and a PS2, though (no Xbox or PS3), so I'd imagine it'd be considerably lower (by, say, a factor of 3?) if I had one or both of those consoles too. I also have 12 or so VC games (a screenfull's worth): none of which I've played for more than 30min, so I stopped buying them several months ago.

Mario & Sonic only sold because it wasn't called "Sonic at the olympic games" and where did you get these excellent sales figures for Resident Evil? Please send me a link. This is news to me! I think you are leaning your argument as to how good the game is over how many sold. You are correct with Mario & Sonic but the rest, although good games, just didn't perform well. It's too much of a gamble for a third party publisher to churn out a game and it flop because little Jimmy wanted Wii sports for christmas.

I have 4 Wii games, but it also allowed me to catch up on GC games that I had missed. Until that point, the only GCs that I played on much were almost SSBM exclusive ones. Prior to getting a Wii the only GC games that I played through were Sunshine and RE 1. That's really what saved the Wii for me, that and playing through the far better version of one of the best games ever RE:4. I almost fear for the fifth game in the series. The controls with the Wii-mote seemed perfect for that sort of thing. But other than that I've actually bought more games for the PS3 than Wii despite having the later of the two for roughly ninte months longer. I also bought more GC games, but that's not fair to compare.

Super Mario Galaxy - got about 15 stars, play it once in a while, maybe more after I finish Zack & Wiki
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 - got it for Christmas, wasn't really into FPSes since I don't have a 360, but the online rocks!!!
Godfather - Collecting dust right now
Big Brain Academy - got addicted to the DS version, so I bought this, play it when friends are over
Elebits - very hard game, but really fun throwing stuff around
Mario Strikers Charged - another fun multiplayer game
Super Paper Mario - haven't played it in a while, might trade it in for Zelda on craigslist, about halfway done
Resident Evil 4 - never had a gamecube, so I picked this up and decided FPSes aren't fun unless it's multiplayer or online
Red Steel - good for multiplayer when friends are over since you can only do online multiplayer in MOH:H2
Wii Sports - play it a lot when friends come over... would've been cool with online
Wii Play - just bought for the extra controller, played it the day I bought it and a few other times

so 12 games total, paid full price for 4 games (SMG, SPM, MSC, Z&W), Wii Play was free since I paid $40 for it, MOH was a gift, BBA and Elebits were on special for $30 each, RE4 and Godfather were $20 each and Red Steel I got for $8.

I have TEN wii games, not counting Sports which I didn't play (not my thing). I'm a serious gamer, not a casual - not to knock casuals - and I wish people would stop claiming there's nothing on the Wii but minigames and ephemera. I don't know why people aren't buying more wii games, but it's not because they're not out there.

Games I have:

Excite Truck (pretty fun)
Trauma Center: Second Opinion (Awesome, I love this series, and if you call it "casual" it's proof you've not played ten seconds of it, this series is monstrously hardcore)
Rayman: Raving Rabbids (Fun minigames, shows a lot of potential for wiimote controls)
Metal Slug Anthology (All the games, my cup runneth over)
Super Paper Mario (Another awesome game from the PM series)
Warioware (Disappointingly short, but what there is is a blast)
Elebits (Holy crap I love throwing stuff around)
Trauma Center: New Blood (even better than SO, Love the co-op, insanely hard but in a fun way)
Super Mario Galaxy (Blew my ass away with its awesomeness)
Zack & Wiki (What a cool blend of point & click adventure and puzzles!)

There are several other games I'd want if I had the time and money, as well - and I'm incredibly hyped for brawl. The games are here, folks.

I have Zelda:TP,Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy and No More Heroes and of course, Wii Sports. My brother has Red Steel and that port of Prince of Persia. I told my brother before he purchased those two games that they're mediocre but he didn't listen. :p

The only two third-party games I'm looking forward to are Okami and Oboro Muramasa Youtouden (if I gets released outside of Japan).

Some of the big game companies such as Ubisoft, EA, Midway, Sega and THQ just don't have any qood quality interesting Wii games coming out in my opinion. Too bad Capcom hasn't announced anything new.

The only Wii games I own are Wii Sports, Wii Play, and "the Bigs". Rented Res Evil 4 (loved it), Excite truck (loved it), and Super Metroid (meh), and SMG (hated it, with a passion). I see very few future Wii games that I even want to RENT, much less BUY. But then, I don't own many games on any system (once I play them, I am not likely to play them again).

What's with the rash of flame bait Wii related posts by Kotaku lately? Yeesh.

I think someone forgot to mention that all sales/attachment rates are down in Japan for ALL consoles, for one. For two, the attach rate for the Wii is higher than any other console, PLUS, developers have gone on record saying that they make a lot more money on Wii games than other system games.

Facts, kooky, I know. I wouldn't be worried about long term sales for the Wii, they sure as heck aren't dropping now, and all indications point to it continuing, despite all opinionated claims to the contrary when every hater with a mouth was proclaiming the Wii sales would dry up ASAP because there are no fun games. Insert 'LOLZ' here.

I got 5 games not including Wii sports. I got Resident Evil 4, The Godfather: Blackhand Edition, Battalion wars 2, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Mario Galaxy. When I get time and money I'll probably buy Zak and Wiki seeing that its 29.99 on Amazon... no wait... 27.99 and... Ok... no more excuses... On another note I also plan to buy No more Heroes and Smash (if that ever gets out). Overall I'm happy with the system since it's the first one I 've owned since the N64. My PC has more games but I was kind of missing console games for a while since it's hard for PC games to have splitscreen multiplayer... I just wish that the Wii has more multiplayer games than just minigames.

I own about 20 Wii games, but only about 5 PS3 and 5 360 games, not counting online games. I own about 30 or 40 Wii online games (would own more if a) my beamer would show NES games and b) I had more room on the Wii), about 10 PS3 online games and 4 360 online games, two of which were free.

Even if you count the PS3 and 360 as one console, I own way more games for the Wii than for these two.

Personally, I love local multiplayer gaming, so the Wii is a natural fit for my preferences. But even for single-player games, the Wii is picking up lately. Super Mario Galaxy, Endless Ocean, Zack & Wiki are all great. On the 360, I'm mainly playing Pac Man CE and the Orange Box right now (played through Fahrenheit on the Weekend). On the PS3, it's Assassin's Creed (yeah, shoulda got the 360 version :-/).

Generally, for the kinds of games I like (quirky stuff, local multiplayer games), the Wii is my most-played console, followed by the PS3. 360 is last.

If third party companies are compaining that their games are not selling on the Wii and the handfull of 1st party games are the only titles that are selling, Where are these 10 1st party titles that everyone purchased over Christmas? My guess is that all retailers jumped on the shortage of Wii consoles throughout the Christmas period and ONLY sold Wiis bundled with 4 of 5 games. I saw thisin most UK supermarkets some of which have US parent companies such as ASDA who is owned by Wallmart. As well as game stores.

Wii sports doesn't count, right?
Sooo, 5 for me. I really don't even wanna count the first two.

-Wii Play (free wii-mote)
-Mario Party 8 (multiplayer with the women in my life)
-Madden 08 (its growing on me)
-Super Mario Galaxy (50 stars)
-LoZ Twilight Princess (Need a block of time to do the cave of ordeals straight through)

That was my xmas right there. I do have a wishlist about 15 games long though. No More Heroes, Smash, Tiger Woods 08, Umbrella Cronicles, RE4, Zack & Wicki, Crossbow Training, MoH 2, GH3, Endless Ocean, MP3 and Excite Truck just to rattle off a few.

I just started a new semester so I don't see myself running low on game anytime soon.

@Unplugged68: Yeah, I'm still scraping up old GC games that I never played/finished, I'm also working on Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid.

Everyone always talks about how the PS3 lacks good games... what about the Wii?! If you take a look at IGN or Metacritic's highest rated games for both systems, you'll notice that PS3 has far more games rated 7 or 70% and above. The Wii has very few. There are just too many cheap ports and kiddy games.

I own 4 games for the Wii. One of which came with the system. Wii sports, play, zelda, and mario galaxy. Overall i havent been to satisfied with its library so far. Mario galaxy did save the system in my eyes though (my personal overall game of the year). To contrast I have 16 360 games and 8 PS3 games (a system with alledgedly no games? right.) Plus the only game in teh future i want for Wii is mario kart (sorry, SSBB bored me on the gamecube). Meanwhile there are a ton of games for the PS3 and 360 that are coming out this year. Guess im not a "casual gamer"...

Every day family members give crappy games out to loved ones, not because they hate you underneath it all, but because YOU have not taken the time to properly educate them on what a good game is. Granted, you have a good start to show what good games are NOT from the few you listed there. With a little guidance and some caring moments of SMG together - you can turn this thing around before it's too late!

Kind of sad that my husband bought/received more AAA games for his 360 in the past 3 or 4 months than the Wii has in its entire line-up.

I only have Wii Sports, Wii Play, Zelda TP, MP3, and SMG. And I have only played Zelda all the way through.

Need some actual good games with more variety instead of all this mini-game crap.

So, yeah, I'm above all average attach rates for the Wii.

IIRC I have close to 30 games for the PS2, and about half that for my N64. My PS3 has 3 games (Motorstorm, UTIII, Uncharted), but that's because I just got it for Christmas. I expect my final tally for the PS3 to exceed that of my Wii. (SSBB is the only game I can think of that I'm looking forward to.)

@DON! KING! (PSN = PSHCHOBOY)... LAME I KNOW! I'M HARDLY A P...: I know a bunch of casual gamers and they own more Wii games than I do. Just like how you say that casual gamers don't read gaming blogs, they also don't often shop at game stores (like yours) and instead buy at stores like Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy, or shop online. I've heard that over the holiday season Nintendo was selling 10 games for every new Wii sold. That's not an attach rate, since it's counting all games sold versus new consoles purchased, but it's still impressive.

The attach rate in Japan is down for almost every console. I'm not going to pretend to know why but people in Japan just aren't as excited for games anymore. Meanwhile attach rates are increasing in nearly every other part of the world. Japan still matters but it's no longer the be all end all of console success.

@okenny :): 'Captain obvious' strikes again, does he? So it's completely obvious that the Wii has a an excellent attach rate in both the US and Europe, and only in Japan does it have a somewhat poor attach rate? I see.

I've got 8 Wii games (excluding Wii Sports), I think. Mostly those were pretty good...

To be honest, I've always thought attach rates are a useless statistic because if I undertand it correctly, as people buy the system in greater numbers, the attach rate goes down (a higher proportion of new users = on average fewer games owned), while if people stop buying the system, it goes up. Worse, as a wider range of the population buys the system, the attach rate goes down (people are buying your system who are less heavily into gaming compared to the early adopters, so they only buy a few games each year). What is this supposed to measure?

A better measure of the same basic thing would be average games bought per Wii owner per year of owning the system, which at least removes the first problem above. (A similar, and possibly easier to understand, metric would be to use software sales for one month; during that month, how many Wii games were bought, compared to total lifetime sales of the hardware so far.)

A still better measure might be to simply take the proportion of games sold each month that are for Wii. Similar to the 'hardware war' pie charts, you can do a similar chart of game sales per platform. That's what actually matters for the platform owners.

I still want to get RE4, No More Heroes, and of course Brawl. I have no 360, but between schoolwork and Metroid/Galaxies, I think I have enough to do til summer at least.

Anyone besides me buy a lot of used GC games with their Wii? Lots of gaming to be had on the cheap, although I do want a 360 eventually.

I have too many Wii games for my own good. I haven't even opened Tomb Raider still!

I'm probably going to trade a few of them in soon...namely Dewy's Adventure, Mercury Meltdown and possibly Super Paper Mario, since there's an extremely high likelihood that I'll never finish it (I grew bored with it's non-existent difficulty.
I've only traded in a game once before, so this is, like, a big deal for me...relatively speaking.

On a side note, if anyone would rather own one of the above mentioned games, let me know and I'll gladly sell it for chceeeeeeeeeeeeap.

only 3, 4 if you count wii play which I only really bought for the second controller. The others are zelda:tp, wii sports, and mario galaxy which I JUST picked up. SSBB is probably going to be my next purchase. My main problem is none of the good games are dropping into my normal price range of buying. I generally wait until the games are 20 dollars or less before buying, but even the good launch games havn't dropped below 30.

Regardless of generation it's the system I own the least games for. I even have more DS games than Wii games.

The way I see it, I have bought 3 Wii games. As for the other two, one came with the system and the other one, well that was a controller purchase that came with a really bad game (IMO).

There just aren't that many good games for the Wii other than Nintendos first party titles hence the low attach rate. I find myself casually playing Wii Play and Wii Sports with the family and using my PS3 and 360 for hardcore play. IMO the remote and nunchuck don't work well for much except for minigame type game play.

More a casual console gamer, occasionally play on the console just for a quick fix a few minutes to a few hours, but I'm usually always on the PC for the hours I can possibly hope to have free of responsibility and work, shooting people, crafting, leveling and stuff....

oo oo I play bejeweled on the way to work on my mobile phone everday, that counts too.

Anyway, I've got: Zelda: TP, Madden '07, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Trauma Center: SO, WarioWare, Super Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime: Corruption, Super Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Zack and Wiki, and Mercury Meltdown

And I have to say... for the most part they were/are all fun games. I never could finish Trauma Center and I haven't started Fire Emblem, but other than that I played through all of them and enjoyed them quite a bit.

BTW, if you haven't played Mercury Meltdown it's a really cool game and it falls into the 2 for $30 deal Best Buy has going online this week:
