Yet this woman wants to hold people accountable for a games questionable content when its not even marketed to or intended for children. I offer Cooper Lawrence the debate time she wished to have continued with Geoff Keighley recently on Fox News Channel. I doubt she would want to do that though, as I verbally expose her for the sexist charlatan that she is. I mean if I were promoting a book that contained pedophilic passages I don't think I'd debate someone over the topic of societal responsibility inherent in their chosen medium's content.

I currently attend school for Game Design at SCAD, I am 27, and have no interest in making projects for children. However, just because children exist doesn't mean I will or should restrain my artistic expression. We both want to get into people's heads Cooper. I am up front about my willingness to provide questionable content for an adult's leisure entertainment. Cooper on the other hand wishes to pass of her adult themed content as a helpful resource for shaping a woman's life to an audience she began cultivating during their time in high school. Please correct me if I'm wrong but CosmoGIRL is specifically targeted towards teenage girls, and if miss Lawrence thinks teenage boys can be affected by media sources, shouldn't the same be true for teenage girls.

Maybe it is easier to not research something before making an opinion Cooper, but look what happens if you even take more than five minutes of interest. Knowledge is both a tool and a weapon, but then again so is ignorance. The main difference between the two is that knowledge can perpetuate, but ignorance falls short quickly, and has to cut away and provide distraction. I could write a better book's worth of detail on your social implications and personal characteristics, but that would cast you in an interesting light and relevance that you don't deserve.

African Americans used sit-ins as a form of non-violent protest by sitting in on the offending property until their demands were met or they were moved by force. In no way did they hide behind a monitor and vandalize a webpage. @Jest: Jest you really need to take a look at your case. What have you done to combat this matter? I'm guessing nothing. I think that you are the type that looks down on people for using immature tactics to achieve something while doing nothing yourself. Unless you can come up with something better to do just shut up. And don't say just ignore it, that is the most idiotic way of fighting something since suicide attacks. EA had it right when they said games conflict with traditional media, fight for the same profit base.

The media should report in the people's interest, not corporate interests, and yet time and again the media simply reports on things because of the monetary angle.

This needs to stop.

Furthermore traditional means of protest have been closed to the general public.

We can't boycott their products because they've made themselves not only indispensable but all pervading.

You can't say "I'm not going to watch Fox News" but still go buy the Futurama DVD - it's the same company and the profits go to the same people.

American's aren't even allowed to protest without permits, so no spontaneous protesting outside the Fox Studios.

And don't even think of sending angry letters - you'll be put on the FBI terror list of people to watch.

So attacking this woman's work is one of the few ways we have to combat the repression by all mainstream media, and make all people who wish to appear in the media to actually pause and think before they open their mouths.

There are many other books out there that were written by actual practicing psychologists and which are respected by the psychological community at large. I seriously recommend Codependent No More by Melody Beattie for anyone that stuggles with this. Also, going to an actual licensed psychologist may be the answer. Please don't contribute to the rash of pop psychology that promises quick fixes and delivers little or no results. Seems they must be handing out these Ph D's with a 6 pack of twinkies at your local 7 11. A word to the wise if you're a parent, some of the imagery and themes in this book are highly suggestive and sexual in nature, I'd recommend not leaving it anywhere your children can read it."

I would love it if we as gamers had a decent representation in the media. Sort of like a go-to guy for most, if not all issues about gaming. G4 does the worst with this, however. Like you said, I don't recall anything gadgety or technical about Ninja Warrior or an "interactive" Cops.

One thing that hasn't really been discussed too much is the panel that spoke about this after Cooper and Geoff squared off. That panel was so poorly informed, it reminded me of a piece on The Onion News Network rather than a real Fox News clip. Particularly the comment about "what ever happened to pac-man"... Are we really thinking in those terms - where people had no idea games were evolving since the mid 80's? That to me was almost as upsetting as Geoff and Cooper's volley.

When a 'psychologist' looses her credibility it is only fair to advise people that are ignorant about what she does and might buy her book and believe everything that's in it. I think that innocent people are being saved thanks to reviews like that, we should thank the internet vigilantes for it.

If you see her book(haven't read it, this is just a guess) and you listen to what she actually said on the TV interview, her main concern is that women are being portrayed in unrealistic fashion and how this negatively affects people and gives them damaging views of idealism including sexually. This is a common concern for women, although the complexity of this issue I think escapes her. i.e. most women that hate Porn have no problems when they them selves are the porn, this is reacting to something that makes them feel undiserable.
I agree that the media does this, ironically TV, Cosmo, Maxim, FHM are much worse at this than Video Games have been at their worse in my opinion, but it's more complicated than that, and nothing I've seen of mass effect seems degrading or objectifying, or damaging as she suggests, even if it were secretly targeted at kids.
I do think she's uneducated, and needs to be corrected, but I think if you wanted to get her to apologize publicly and correct the situation you'd have to say something like "hey I understand what your concerns are, but here's something you may not realize" I do think they all attacked the game for sensationalism, so I'm not saying EA or anyone isn't justified in being pissed and biting back, I'm just saying if you actually wanted to build understanding and respect you will have to understand where your 'enemy' is coming from.

This author vaguely has an understanding of the english language, she spells "woman" as "womyn" and "culture" as "cultoure" and has no sense of the diference between "were" "we're" "where" and "wear" I was disgusted by her use of the english language, try spell check at least.
