@MacHarper: You'd think a company based in France, with rather important offices in Montreal (at least important enough to host a particularly overrated personality, but I digress and not mention who she is. Wait, she? OHSHI- ) with a track record of translating their games in french (and by that, I mean the entire game and not just the manual) wouldn't have any problems with the manual's translation. I mean, what with the FRANCE and the Montreal and the fact that there's a ton of people on ze interweb and not that would have done this for free...

Something I've oft wondered is why do you guys have to comply to a provincial law? Hell, delay it for ONE part of the continent, not... a whole country.

Also, I've always thought Ubi was fail in everything they did. This pretty much cinched it.

I really think that all this over the top harsh stuff against GameSpot is a bit rough. From the "situation" that happened a while back, we know a few things:

A) First, The situation was involving the upper management. The only assumed involvement with the writers was with Gerstmann's firing, and the slight rewriting (and new video) of one review. Score was untouched.

I do agree that the rewriting was unnecessary. The review was meant to be how it was, even if people at GameSpot believed that the article was too harsh for the score. To be honest, if they wanted to change anything, change the score. The actual review is what the person believed in. Changing the review is deciding that the writer was unfit in his job.

B) Gerstmann said that the writers were never affected in such a way. I really wish I could provide a link, but this happened so far back that it's hard for me to search for where exactly he said this.

3) This is a quote from Frank Provo, from a while back.

"The GameSpot staff did not fire Jeff. The GameSpot staff are NOT corrupt. GameSpot itself is NOT the problem. CNet is. CNet's management is. The problem lies with the puppet masters. Unfortunately, those masters have RUINED GameSpot's credibility and reputation... a reputation built up for more than a decade."

Source: [www.gamedaily.com]

Instead of blowing off GameSpot, we really should be supporting them. The ones who don't want this to happen. We should support the ones who want the free speech, to be able to declare an over hyped game bad, or a under hyped game good (or bad...).

4) Another quote from the above source:

"I believe CNet management let Jeff go for all the wrong reasons," said Provo in his blog. "I believe CNet intends to soften the site's tone and push for higher scores to make advertisers happy."

This quote is originally sourced at [www.gamespot.com]

This is from a writer who wants the free speech, and understands whats happening. In dissecting his quote, he states "I believe CNet INTENDS to soften...," future tense. Plans to. Hasn't yet.

I understand why people are all over the GS debacle. I understand the feeling that GS should not be read. While this might hurt CNet, it will also hurt the people who want to deliver the stuff we want. The writers.

On Insomniac... I have no idea what that's about.

unspec4

Every game that should have recieved a four or five-star score got one's and two's. (case in point, No More Heroes.)

After my first night playing, I get the strong impression that Insomnia did not even bother playing the game. He calls it a GTA clone when you don't even get into the open world until 30 minutes into the game. I'm willing to bet he skipped all the tutorials as well. That has to be one of the worst reviews I've ever read. Here's a sample:

"There are no cops to chase you down when you do something illegal (you are not allowed to do anything illegal anyway -- there aren't even any red lights to run)."

That's funny because I saw streetlights when I was playing and ran a dude over. But why would cops chase you anways, that's got nothing to do with what the game is about. Talk about going over someone's head.

Player2

It definitely brought a smile to my face at many points. Incredibly violent, which is a nice change for the Wii. I was impressed with how many different ways in which it makes use of the Wii Remote. I think developers could learn a thing or two from this game. Only problems so far was that the camera is a little wonky and that the driving aspect isn't that great. But it looks great and is a lot of fun.

teh_joe

@Mark Wilson: If you're a reviewer, and your entire review revolves around comparing everything in the game to another game, you should probably be fired. I'm not even a professional writer, but I know the difference between trying to paint the picture of comparison between one title and another, and laboriously going out of your way to tear down something based on something else. A good review spends more time talking about the game being reviewed, than the game you're so desperately wanting this game to be.

I'm not saying that people can't have their opinions, but just from looking at the list of their reviews... well, if many reviewers had their outlook on the industry, I for one would be not be sad to see the gaming journalism/review industry ousted and replaced with people who can get over themselves long enough to understand the gaming industry is constantly evolving and changing... not locked in the past of obscure titles that never left Japan. Even more so if everyone is so egotistical they cannot deal with people having a difference of opinion in their forums. How depressing would this site be if we banned anyone who decided to start up rousing conversations in an opposition view to information in the news above?

Ampillion = That Man.

I'm jumping on the anti-3D graph bandwagon.

Anyways, I was pleased and surpirsed (with a side of "oh shit") that NMH was sold out at every gamestop/ebgames (save one) here in SF at around 1:40 when I got off school on the 23rd. Called up stonestown GS, and got in just in time to get one of 4 on-shelf copies.

I've been loving the game so far. The only real problem I have with this game is the bike. The constant riding makes me think of long boring boat rides in Wind Waker.

The rank 5 fight was... interesting. I wish I could keep on playing, but I'll have to wait til tomorrow now. Oh well, 3 ranks a day isn't too bad I suppose. Anyways, it's no understatement to say that it has me hooked with its twisted yet straightforward charms.

Kilian

Does it even matter what the guy on insomnia says about this game? The reviewer is entitled to his own opinion. Ultimately, how you feel about the game is up to you and shouldn't be heavily based off of other people's opinions. Am I right? Also, a site like insomnia is pretty obscure to the mainstream and i don't think it'll actually affect the NMH's sales.

Btw... a lot of the games on insomnia are relatively unknown because they're arcade games :\

Loler

This is really all you need to know about No More Heroes in two paragraphs, courtesy of Game trailers:

"No More Heroes gives the finger to complexity and realism, going for simplicity and style and scoring pretty big. Things can seem sparse and simple a lot of square shapes and right angles, but the game knows how to use color, doing especially well with blood red, and lays down some thoughtful detail. The game also delivers kick-ass cutscenes and never turns down the chance to make a slick transition. For its part, the soundtrack is catchy and is a memorable part of the game's bizarre but cool atmosphere.

Super-concentrated style and constant action make No More Heroes game an unmistakable original for the Wii. The game boldly wears both its heart and its punk rock attitude on its sleeve, and manages a totally playable action control scheme for the Wii that uses the Wiimote without abusing it. The game is in some ways covers a narrow range and could definitely push farther with its open world concept, but the killer vibe and amazing moments make this heroic effort worth checking out."

aaa

The Frankenreview for this game includes the two most negative reviews. That's not a very good cross section, unless you're going to include outliers like the G4 review that gives it a perfect score as well.

Additionally, Ubisoft has put very little money into promoting this thing; I've seen some ads on Penny Arcade but that's it. You can't accuse Gamespot of selling out for ad dollars in their review unless you can point me to the No More Heroes ads on the site.

The best review for this game is the GameTrailers one. Gamerankings puts this game at 88% right now. Gametrailers gave it an 8.2. This game is not as "niche" as Killer7. The Insomniac review is horrible. It's not supposed to be a GTA rip off, if you can't figure that out from the first five minutes of play then you have no business writing video game reviews. That Kotaku included this review is insulting to literate gamers everywhere.

aaa

They are designed for corporate nitwits to disguise crappy performance with bars that are artificially tall, and worse, go so far as to obscure actual data by making it difficult to line up the top of a bar with the legend (see Insomnia above).

As my first Wii purchase besides Guitar Hero III, which I could've bought for XBOX 360 but didn't want my sister hogging it, I am extremely happy I bought No More Heroes.

When they rated this game Mature, they absolutely meant it. It feels M rated in the first 5 minutes. And this made me so damn happy knowing that I had to lower the volume and shut the door to make sure the kids in the house weren't attracted to my new Wii game which obviously isn't meant for them.

Can you win a fight by turning backwards and mashing the A button? Yes. But that strategy lasts for about 30 seconds at most, and if Insomnia really thinks video games were meant to be played blind, then their reviews should be read blind as well.

This game is fun and so hugely different than anything on the Wii so far. Highly recommended.

Danj3ris: man of many overlooked ideas.

@ytdb: Absolutely agree. The first half hour or so, I said to myself "oh man, what did I just spend my $50 on..."...after that, it was like it got better and better every minute.

For those looking for a review, summarizing the above is correct; the overworld is very much a means to tie the missions together, not a "game". There's tons of slowdown in these sections, and the bike controls pretty much like ass; the combat, however, is IMMENSELY satisfying. This game is definately worth picking up--if anything, to show support to a third party, mature game.

The fighting scenes are like Final Fight meets Tempest 2000. The driving scenes are like a game running on an emulator that you know won't run perfectly until you buy your next computer. Mash those two together, and it comes down to one thing: Did you like Final Fight? Did you like Tempest 2000?

Each mission takes all of 2 minutes. In fact, they're almost all timed at 2 minutes and you're done so they're short and to the point. Going to the gym takes about the same amount of time to finish the minigames and you get enough money from completing the assassination and each new job that you never really run low on money unless you buy all of the new clothes the second they appear.

Overall, you spend easily the most time in missions with each one taking about a half hour. Makes for a not too long game but that's pretty much to be expected of the genre. Not like it needs to be drawn out or anything. Suda51 created had an idea, made a game out of it and his idea is executed perfectly. Technical aspects with the overworld can be pretty much ignored.

EggmaniMN

I enjoyed killer 7 cause it was an experience you couldn't get anywhere else. No More Heroes is just the same; sure there is elements of GTA and Heavenly Sword and GOWish weapon swinging (there aren't that many original games out there), but there is a charm and style about the game that makes it fun and entertaining. Suda 51 delivered a good game that can only come from them, why? because it was nothing that you'd expect and that is a form of art.

aminus

Wow. After a few moments of research, it appears that Insomnia has a major hard-on for hyper-japanese games and an outstanding disgust for just about everything else.
Why is Kotaku using such a bizarrely bias reviewer for frankenreview? To show the other side of the spectrum for people who hate everything?

AdmiralRupert

I've read all the reviews and the Insomnia review was the worst by far. Not because he gave the game a low score (hey to each his own right?).

But dude came off like a hack wannabe reveiwer, writing for his highschool newspaper.

He spends at least half his reveiew talking about why the GTA series was so great and then blast this game for not being GTA (the stuff of pure genius /sarcasm). He even closes his review on that note.

Tries to be funny or cutting edge or hip, or man actually I don't know what dude was trying to do with his reveiw.

I'm surprised Insomoniac pays people like this to be apart of their staff. Dude came off like a fanboy in his review.

Note using colorful language, blasting a game because it's not like another game, and trying to be a comedian isn't cool. That's just bad journalism.

FunKrusher

@ImpetuousStyle:
It is sleeper hit good. I own the game, so I have had plenty of hands-on time with it. It has a deep and engaging combat system, awesome boss fights, good missions and side missions, and weird jobs. The art style is pretty good even though the graphics may not be a marvel.

The open world is basically a hub to get to other things, but you will not want to spend time exploring it anyways because you just want to get to the next awesome combat area. Also, probably the worst thing there is is the fact that if you fail a side mission (where you have to do an assassination of someone), you have to go back to the place where you sign up for the side mission and agree to do it again before trying it again - this can get a tiny bit annoying, but easy to get over.

I suggest people buy this game, but if you are expecting a GTA openworld-type game or a graphics powerhouse, then do not buy the game because that is not what this game is about.

Lstormy10

I feel some pity on Insomnia for being so naive. They obviously got frustrated with getting beat in the game when not using all the different fighting mechanisms that form into awesome fighting gameplay (some of the best around especially on Wii).

IGN and GameTrailers have had the best reviews thus far that looked at every aspect.

X-Play, GameSpot, and NGamer have good reviews also, but forgive a little more than the above two.

Insomnia is just out there somewhere (never even have heard of the site)...

Suggestion for Kotaku: Try not to include a review from Insomnia again in any Frakenreview as they have extreme biases and are egotistic (just check out their site and forums).

Lstormy10

I was disappointed at first, but after about 2 or 3 hours I really got into the swing of things (now I'm about 8 hours in and love it). It's a really well balanced game I think. The combat could be reduced to button mashing, but in true Japanese action game style playing that way will get you a shitty "grade" for the mission. The minigames (side jobs) are entertaining just long enough to get a gold, which is all you ever really need to play them. The driving part of the world map is pretty shitty, until you realize that it can be circumvented basically, with boosting and Wii Remote gesture based "drifting" you can get anywhere in a matter of seconds. Plus, running over big lines of trees is strangely satisfying. And the treasure hunting, dumpster punching, ball collecting aspect is basically just like GTA games (one of the most fun aspects IMHO).
I think the world map is basically just there to lend atmosphere, and make it more of a cohesive story really. Perhaps it's unnecessary, but again it can basically be bypassed.
This game is really about two things: the boss fights, which are really fun, and the "atmosphere" (graphic style, music, voice acting) which are all very over the top and cool.
GTA was made by European hipsters, and this is a Japanese hipster's take on that style of gameplay. A postmodern GTA. Sure it lacks the polish of GTA in some respects (the open world) but it beats GTA by miles as far as "atmosphere" goes.
All in all I would say it's the best 3rd party Wii game yet. Now that I think about it, it's the only one that I have, besides RE:4.

P.S. If I was a few years younger I would probably think this is the best game of all time.

ytdb

This is a fucking masterpiece, pure and simple. Rough at the edges, some of it's ideas too big and strange for it to even wrap it's OWN head around them, but it's glorious in the whole. Insomnia has it's head up it's ass about the combat sequences - the fact that you're "stance" is actually MAPPED to the angle of the remote makes the swordfighting ridiculously visceral and involving - especially the finishing moves.

It's like the first "post-modern" video game in the way that it wants to look and feel as much like a VIDEO GAME as it can. Most games now are either trying to look like reality or like some subgenre of animation - this one wants to look like an early-90s arcade brawler in a free-roaming setting; complete with pixel-art powerups, hordes of identical enemies with themed costumes, the funky half-cel/half-textured character designs, the "high score" ranking screen... beautiful. It's like the bastard offspring of "Shenmue" and "River City Ransom."

moviebob

That being said, Insomnia doesn't know what the hell they're talking about if they can't find this game very enjoyable. It's a tribute to the hardcore gamers of the world- it delights in its own idiosyncratic world and pays homage to the culture of videogames while doing it in high style.

Enemies WILL kick your ass especially the ones with their own beam swords and the combat is only repeatitive if you let it be, Travis has enough moves to keep the combat fresh IMO if you want to just mash on the A button the whole time you can just don't be surprised at the enemies that block your attacks. Also mashing A for bosses = instaFAIL! the second boss alone will block all your attacks and counter with a charged shot that knocks your ass flat.

jive238

@ceilingFANBOY: gets shrinkage on Saturday: Being easy isn't an excuse for a 40%-esque score for the game though. Considering it's target audience was those picking up the DS, and they wanted to have everyone able to play it, of course it was going to be easier than some earlier iterations. The game was good, asides being a little too easy for anyone real familiar with Mario or platformers.

No, I'll agree with Prof, this site seems to reek of some terrible.
I've been playing this since yesterday, and I gotta say the game is fun (which to me is really all that matters). If you play the game on normal mode the combat actually seems alot deeper than Insomnia makes it sound. I died twice fighting the opening boss trying to figure out his tells, and by the time I got to the third boss this at about noon today I was so frustraited that I was seriously considering restarting the game on easy mode. The discrepency between my experience and the Insomnia review makes me think they just defaulted to easy mode (admit it you do it too). Something I resolved not to do on new years eve.

Omi

K7 had very shallow, almost insulting (IMHO) gameplay, and to hear the gameplay is so bad that you could turn around and mash A while randomly shaking the remote...well...that sounds just boring as hell. I may as well watch a movie and shake my remote to get the actors to perform actions on screen, yes?

I'm sure devs are happy to see good scores coming for the most part - I'm sure there'll be advert dollars directed to those good review sites. I do wish the game the best, good luck NMH.

Hope I don't see you in the bargain bin for $20 in 6 months, but I wouldn't be surprised.

sadkermit - soon to be banned for standing up to the ummm nazi.

@Kyle81: Agreed, but damn if I still didn't obsess over Killer 7. I really enjoyed it.

This game is right up my alley, but there's this problem... I don't have a Wii. Not that I couldn't procure one if the need arose, but the DMC4 demo is out and that game will be dropping in a few weeks.

Unfortunately this one is getting lost in the shuffle for now.

Madeira

I've been playing No More Heroes for a little over 5 hours now. It's a lot of fun... the graphics are meh but the style and art direction is really cool. At first it's awkward but getting used to it makes it a fun game. It'll hold me off till the DMC4 demo today.

drweazel
