@Those who might lament about 'new' LEGO pieces (anyone with no interest in the Brick should just skip to the next post!)

I hear this quite frequently, both online and from real life friends, and I'm going to be a complete and utter nerd for responding to it, so apologies in advance!

Since the LEGO brick was first made, LEGO has been making new brick types, new special pieces, new colors. The minifig, for example, came 20 years after the first brick. Making new pieces is not new. And some of them are quite an improvement: not every thing can be made (or looks good) with little squares and rectangles.

This is not to say that LEGO Group is perfect and every new piece is a wonderful addition. Its just that what you think of as 'classic' LEGO probably wasn't. :)

@Purple Dave: The Adam extractor is a round, flat, red stud stuck on the bottom of a red, hollow cone. Pretty simple, actually.

@Purple Dave: Ah, you are right. I was thinking of the giant Knights Kindom (II) people, who I guess I just mentally lump into the same group as Bionicles, as they are comparable in their scale and construction style (in my opinion).

The harpoon gun is from 87? I didn't realize they had those so far back... are you sure it's that recent?

Hey, Luke, I hate to break it to you, but the ball hinges used in Rosie's shoulders/elbows/hips/knees/ankles are new-fangled-er than any of the parts used in the previous 'Fig Daddy (last year's red Clonetrooper deco notwithstanding). So are the nifty 1x3 curved slopes that can be seen in the far right of this pic. There's also a little 1x1 slope tile used for the finger tips, a long fender piece under the barrel of the gun, and a different fender piece used just above and below the knees in the front.

The Jack Stone figure came out in 2001, the white piece used for 'Fig Daddy's head is from '86, the chainsaw blade is '93...though I can't place the red piece that was used as the Adam extractor (I'm not even sure it's authentic LEGO), and there's no way to positively identify the parts used for the Little Sister, but the only part that _might_ be a recent design is the hair.

In contrast, the ball hinge system and the little "cheese wedge" slope only go back to 2004, and the curved slopes and fenders came out in 2005.

But the Miniland-scale version does look a lot better, even if it was misidentified.

@Sabre_Justice:
The speargun is from the '87 Divers sets, and the click hinges are a _little_ older than Exo-Force, having been first used for the large-scale Knights Kingdom II characters, and some of the Designer sets like Deep Sea Predators.

@gramblor:
That hinge system has never, that I am aware, been used in a BIONICLE set. They all use free-floating ball-and-socket joints, not the clicky ball hinges.

@Strangelove: I 100% agree. There are many new fandangled pieces involved in this set. I believe those elbow joints are new as of the Bionicle series, and though the harpoon gun is probably about 10 years old. Even the tops of the hands are pretty new pieces, I believe only being available in the past few years.

I own a Nintendo Wii, and have never played Bioshock, so this is the limit that I can contribute to this conversation...
