If YOU don't care for the games, that's fine. I doubt Wii Fit would keep me entertained for as long as it could some, either.

But my goodness, man, if it's a fun game, mini-games or not, then that's the bottom line. People buy this because it looks/is fun, because they can keep up with it on a daily basis, and because it's something unique that has never been tried or done before.

I love new IP as much as the next guy - but what you're essentially saying is that you wish Nintendo would embrace something new and then poo-pooing something new that they embrace. I'd go as far to say that Wii Fit will introduce more new ideas to gaming than any new IP you have on the PS3/360 all year - both concept and input-wise.

We can both agree that there's a lot of crap on the Wii. Shovelware, BAD (keyword) mini-game collections, and cash-in licenses. If you don't like what the Wii is in just the ONE YEAR it's been on the market, that's your prerogative. But please, please, please, try to look at gaming outside of the box that your post indicates you put it in.

@semjaza: I apologize. I did not mean to flame anyone. If that is how I came off, I truly am sorry. And I'm not just saying that to you, but to everyone.

However, I stand by my stance that the hatred Wii-fit recieves is downright ridiculous. I've heard more about this game from Wii-haters than I have from Wii-fans(most of whom are more concerned with Brawl and NMH, by the way). That, to me, is pretty telling in and of itself. I fail to see how this game's existance, or even the Wii's existance, interferes with the rest of the game industry. All three of the current consoles have plenty of games that appeal to traditional gamers. Why do you all feel so violated by the fact that a company wishes to expand the market? Especially when you are still getting what you want. I mean, I understand and agree with many of the arguements brought against Nintendo in other areas (online, 3rd parties, etc.), but the whole anti-Wiifit campaign people seem to be on confounds me.

Again, I apologize for flaming, but this really bizarre to me. Personally, I think Wiifit is interesting, but I would probably never buy it. I just dont get alot of the hate. Why do so many of you hate this game so much? I really want to know.

Or maybe I should just let it go. I suppose there are some things I'm not meant to understand. =/

As someone who owned a wii, it is indeed just a series of novelties and gimicks for 9/10 of it's games, including wiifit.

The DS suffered from this at first, but managed to overcome it. The wii shows no signs of this, as it seems the more lacking a game is, the bigger a hit it is. Nothing is original, its ether yet another game in in existance francise, or a sequal. At least Sony and MS seem to be embraceing new IP, where as nintendo has shown little desire to make any new ip that isn't a mini game collection.

I realize not everyone, especially the younger crowd posting, exercises in some fashion. To clarify however, Meditation IS a form of exercise. It reduces stress levels and muscle tension, and is a good preparation for later, more intense training. Part of leading a fit life, which is why they call it 'Wii Fit', last I checked. Granted, the board doesn't have much use in this application, but it's probably part of a training regiment in one of their programs.

I own a Wii for my munchkins and it's great, it's way more physical and they get more out of playing games that foster that kind of motivation, plus it wears them out easier, making bedtime less of a chore compared to pent up energy kids on rainy days, etc. I have most every other system on the market, but the Wii is still fun as hell.

Even when I got out of the police academy, which was basically six months worth of boot camp you got to go home at night from, I only got down to 226 lbs. This was with at least two hours of running and calisthenics six days a week for six months, mind you.

That said, since my time of quitting the police department and going back to school, I have become a huge fat lard of 275 lbs, on my way back down to a slightly more healthy level.

Just because _you_ think meditation/yoga is a lot of cock and bull; that the only way to stay fit is to hit the gym, pump some iron and maybe take some steroids if your muscles aren't looking the way you want them to, doesn't make it worthless.

Fact is, maybe people will be able to improve their mind/body control through using Wii Fit and then be able to have enough will power to be more active and lose weight in order to be fit.

@asianmacker: I agree with you that Nintendo should be helping 3rd parties market their games better, as I think most people would - but I don't see a connection between this game and Nintendo NOT doing that. It's not like Nintendo is only one entity and that when it's focused on something it can ONLY be focused on that one thing. It's perfectly possible that Nintendo can market and sell this game and have another part of the company be working with 3rd parties. One doesn't disclude the other.

As for the WiiFit name - I guess we must have just seen that differently. The "fit" aspect also appears to be both mind AND body (as I think this clip does well to illustrate, along with the Yoga exercises). Sure, it's not a treadmill or anything like that (though it does have a jogging simulator), but the game DOES have some aspects that will keep a person fit (aerobics routine, push-ups, etc.). Is it as effective as jogging a few miles or going to the gym for a workout? Probably not, unless someone goes crazy with it. Or eating healthily? Probably not. So? I don't agree that this is false advertising in the least. If people are actively involved with this game, they are in some form getting fit from it.

To go on top of that, the games actually look pretty fun, which is something that can normally be expected from Nintendo. Again, if it's not a person's favorite, then that's one thing. But false advertising? I don't see it.

"Nintendo has lost all focus..." If they lost all focus and that's why they lost so badly last generation, then shouldn't it follow that they should be losing so badly THIS generation? Who's focus did they lose? People still seem to like their games, millions strong. Maybe it's precisely BECAUSE they lost their GC-era focus that they're doing so well, who knows? Either way, there's really no way to back this statement up.

Heck, Wii Sports got people active! I also haven't seen any promises in the advertising that people will lose weight by playing this game - what I see is people using a peripheral to play a series of mini-games, test their balance, get a little exercise, meditate, measure their weight and BMI (which is a pretty nifty feature) and I'm sure a few other things that I haven't seen it do yet.

"Just face it and read most of the comments here; this product is stupid and utter BULLSH*T." I read comments from both camps, and have nothing to face, really. I still stand by what I said earlier - this looks like a relatively fun game with a unique peripheral that works. Nintendo innovated with a device that's never been seen before, and that's a lot more than can be said for most companies. It doesn't really reach into the hardcore gamer demographic, but we've known for awhile now that Nintendo's not giving all their attention to that camp anymore. Is this the best product ever? No. But I'm not about to hate it because it isn't.

If it was a bad game, that would be one thing. But the well thought-out games that perform well and are fun don't really give me much reason to hate them, even if they're not my cup of tea.

And believe it or not, the Yoga douchebags are going to eat the whole idea of balanced sitting (posture training) up as though it were gaming's lone gift to the world.

The meditation level tries to distract you with different things that happen on the screen. One aspect shows a moth flying around getting closer and closer to the candle, until it flies into it and burns up into a fiery glow.

Holy shit people.... These are *games*. They employ rhythm / coordination / balance and keep track of your scores so you can compete with other people in your household or online. Wii Fit just has an exercise / yoga / meditation concept to it.

I know Wii Fit doesn't have an online aspect, I just put that in there to connect back to Guitar Hero / Rock Band.

Pretty cool for someone who is not a hyperactive 14-year-old. It actually reminds me of the stories about creation of the Amiga. The designers took one of the motion/weight-sensing controllers that they designed for a ski arcade game and hooked it up to a computer. Then, when someone was stressed out, they'd go sit and/or stand on the controller, trying to meditate. This was immortalized in the AmigaOS system error messages which were displayed in a flashing red box with a caption "guru meditation error". As long as it isn't the only thing you could do with WiiFit, it will be interesting.

I have Wii Fit, and this is the final unlockable. It's just a 'cool down' exercise of 'zazen' (meditation) and actually, if you try it, it's hilarious. It is in no way serious, and if you do well you start to 'levitate' (the room moves further away and you start to look down on the candle) as it tries to further distract you.

Rather than jumping the gun and accusing everything new that someone tries as BullShit, perhaps it'd be better to actually research the thing your discussing and maybe even TRY IT FOR YOURSELF.

According to the balance board Wiki, the Wii Fit's weight limit is 136kg(300lb) in Japan, and the "Western" Version will be beefed up to a 150kg(330lb) limit. Even though Wikis aren't always right, I'll take the Wiki's word for the weight limit before I do random Kotaku commenter guy's.

Even Shaq weighs less than 150kg (or least he's listed at 325lbs, he's probably closer to 360 right now). Nintendo should get him for the ad campaign, that'd kill any rumors about it not being able to handle big-assed Americans.
