"Okay, now I just have to figure out if that was a man or woman" That cracked me up.. but everything leading up to the joke.. well it was the same as walking along and then just out of no where getting hit in the face with a baseball bat. I was surprised.

Anyways, good review, but not his best work.

I find that Yahtzee's reviews are funny precisely because of the juxtaposition of unfamiliar and therefore humourous Australian/British vernacular, sexual/potty humour, lack of punctuation, and more and most importantly, the copious amount of hilarious and clever visual puns employed in each episode.

Now I'm no humourologist (yeah, that HP commercial blew), but I found that funny, despite not being thought provoking. I find that humour necessarily must be as simple as possible to garner as large an audience as possible. Internet humour is useless if only one person chuckles at it - which is all you'd get if it were complex and as deep as poststructuralist critique theory.

People are neither shallow nor stupid just for laughing at this, for it hits at several different levels that all work very well. So bugger off, detractors, unless you can magically conjure up a sort of humour that is both highbrow and has mass appeal all at once.

Finally someone with a similar opinion on The Witcher as mine. Lousy translation, inconsistent voice acting, incredibly unintuitive interface design.

I don't mind the combat system or the amount of talking through. I just wish that the game weren't so rough around the edge.

He complains about senseless use of sex and vulgarity in the Witcher and then, in the same video, branches out by handing us a re-dubbed Painkiller cinematic laced with vulgarity and ending with a fellatio joke.

I love Zero Punctuation, but that re-dub didn't do it for me. I smirked once or twice, but it felt too forced.

I agree with Crecente the machinima sucked. I think its because hereing his voice outside of the review takes away from that seemingly edgy I don't give a fckt persona most of us have come to enjoy. Machinima makes him sound like any average twit with too much time on their hands.

Yahtzee started by posting his stuff to his own website. He used YouTube and forums to get himself noticed.

If you, or anyone else, had better writing style and delivery, I'm sure Kotaku, 1-Up, destructoid, IGN and even gamespot would hire you in a flash.

So you show me (and the rest of the internet) these better reviews you claim exist, and maybe we can make them just as popular as Zero Punctuation.

And I don't mean that in a dismissive sense - I would really like to read/listen to some good reviews.

@Witzbold: i doubt it, by classical standards the manual is quite small, like plantain section small. clocks in around 70ish pages overall most of which are actually diagrams that replicate in game menus.

overall the review leaves me with the impression that croshaw is not a fan of this genre as a whole and therefor should not be writing reviews for games in it.

Hmm...Im still considering getting the witcher, cept will my PC be able to handle it.

I got the heat problem semi solved thanks to a friend but the system reqs is another issue.

One problem is online purchase / download = no biblical manual. Since I really want to see what Yahtzee was going off about. He must not be from the days of classic PC gaming I assume. ;D

Okay, I just love Zero Punctuation, and I love Kotaku for introducing me to it. Dubbing is tricky to do, and his signature biting, no prisoners, no quarter humor pulls it off valiantly, I think.

I played Witcher for a total of three hours trying SO DESPERATELY to get into it, since I had heard so much good about it. In this effort I met only failure. Mind-numbing, IQ-reducing failure.

I agree with the review of The Witcher. I downloaded the demo, played until the first battle, and was so disgusted I uninstalled directly afterwards. I don't know why so many reviewers liked the game, as well as its combat engine. Granted, I haven't played the entire game, but I played enough of the demo to know I didn't want to.

With regards to the "Machinima", I didn't even finish watching it. Cringeworthy.

I think the acting is a little rough at the beginning but the timing and the lipsyncing to the actual cutscene that he didn't make, was pretty impressive. He basically wrote it within those constraints, so he had to write dialogue that sort of looked like they were saying it both in mouth movements and in facial expressions/stance.
That being said i prefer jokes that involve "junk punching"
or "genital-hammer application" to homoerotic/homophobic humor.

Well I can't disagree with Zero more on the entertainment of the game I still think the review was funny and tongue-in-cheek as always. I also thought the machinima at the end was funny, if childish, and has been said that line at the end was great.

In regards to The Witcher I guess you can't really argue that the game does suffer from mumorpugur syndrome, but what rpg doesn't lately? I personally didn't find things complicated, at least any more so than my masochistic brain wants them to be, with the exception of combat which of course is simplistic in interface but entertaining to watch. If you want involved combat play DMC#, or maybe Ninja Gaiden, everything else is simplistic in comparison.

The story is indeed drug out, however I think Zero is being unfair in one major regard, after all of the complaints about Bio Shock and it's developed LACK of 'moral choices' The Witcher turns around and throws moral choices in your face that you have to deal with but can't turn around and change your mind about as you don't see the pay off until long enough later that there is no turning back to change your mind.

It's not machinima, it's a parody dub. I don't know how anybody could call it a machinima, when the definition of machinima is utilizing a game engine in order to animate characters. This is a redub of a cutscene. Apples and oranges. Actually, apples and Buicks.

It had a very "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" feel to it -- like the skit when they had to supply a new audio track for an old film clip.

@FunkyJ: Because there is such an ocean of garbage gaming reviews out there, when something even remotely half-decent surfaces it automatically appears better than it is. The fact that it's so accesible (video rather than text, gamers are lazy after all) contributes too.
The gimmick of rapid speech, hi-larious sprites and analogy after analogy is really beginning to grate. It's easy to tell people "Well you do it better then", but not everyone has an outlet like he does. There are better reviews out there, but the difference is that they don't have Every. Single. Gaming. Blog. announcing Every. Single. One.
Anyway, I'm not complaining, it's good to see reviews that differ from the norm. It's just the pandering from everyone that annoys me.

PC RPG's are by nature pretty complex, but not significantly more than Final Fantasy or a Bioware console game. But then grew up playing Wizardry, Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, etc. so my perspective might be skewed.

You also have to play into the third area(at least) to appreciate the complexity of the story. There really aren't any easy choices in this game and seemingly insignificant decisions have major consequences later on.

While I think the review is funny I couldn't disagree more with his opinion that the game is boring because I've been enjoying it immensely. The interface is not complicated in the least and while I do agree that the execution of combat is pretty simple in execution but has depth in that character talent choices make the game play out differently. The combat picks up much more after the first chapter when you have more abilities to play around with so I wonder how much time he gave it. Also while the protagonist's ability to land ladies is kind of ridiculous and immature the underlying story and some of the themes about morality and destiny are anything but childish. Also his comment about the manual kind of made me "huh?" considering most of the manual is just stuff you see in game. I didn't even pick up the manual to start playing rofl.

Anyways fun review as always. ;)

Whether you enjoyed the extra or not (I did), you have to applaud him for doing it. How many online creators go stale or stick to a single gimmick? How many people reading this right now, if they got something as successful as Zero Punctuation, would be happy to cling to the\at one popular thing and never change a bit for fear of losing their audience?

It's a bit tricky trying to put forth original material while at the same time being a humorous critic, i.e. a cynical bastard. The humor ends up feeling derivative of his own reviews (which of course it is), but the result is that it doesn't feel as original or as funny as the reviews themselves.

To be honest, it feels like something he should be making fun of with his next review.

I chuckled at the end but at the same time if I wanted that I would go find that. Though I did enjoy "Now I just have to figure out if that was a man or a woman."

I'm loving The Witcher though but he's right on a couple points especially that it just keeps going and going to where it drags. Still the best RPG that at least tries to be more traditional PC RPG in style, but it really gets me excited for what Bioware's going to be able to do with the engine in Dragon Age.
