Did you hear about the fit over Burger King's chocolate ice cream image (about a year ago or so)? Some Muslims said that when turned on its side the image looks like the Arabic word for Allah. They then demanded that Burger King change the image. Now, there were no random acts of violence over that, but to suppress freedom of speech and personal rights does not necessarily entail violence. Essentially, I am saying: "Fine. Be offended, but don't try to restrict everybody else's freedoms to publish or produce images you may find to be offensive or 'blasphemous'." Hey, this game has Jesus in it. So what? If they want to have images of Jesus in THEIR game, that's their right. If South Park wants to make fun of Jesus, should I take offense, protest and demand they stop? Or should I just NOT WATCH South Park?! (BTW, I love South Park, even if they make fun of Jesus.) In my opinion, God does not care if people make fun of him and we should not try to prevent those people from doing so if they feel it necessary.

I guess all religion have their soft sport. Religious tolerence means that everyone do their best to respect this.

It is not everyday occurence that someone like me join a "religious tolerence" discussion and point out the fakeness of another religion.

But it is a sad fact that the other side of the argument always show disrespect without even trying to understand the real issue.

So thats it. I might get the hammer for this. But if it helps to open people eyes on the reality of "religious tolerence", I'll take it.

@Syncnister: There's probably a better explanation for this than I can give - all I can say is that we don't know the exact date of Christ's birth. I think that the 25th of December coincided with some events in church history, or perhaps with some dates on the Jewish calendar. Some speculate that a more accurate birthdate was probably sometime in the Spring.

Those people who resorted to violence are just morons who got carried away.

If you wanna hating Muslims so much, just be sensible and limit it to the extremists(example: al-Qaeda and Taliban). If you do a lil unbiased research, you'll find that they've been twisting the Islamic faith a LOT.

I can understand the Atheists enjoying this game but for those followers of the mainstream religions, I just don't get how you could enjoy such a blasphemy since the moronic developers of this game basically made fun of your holy figures.

Good lord. I just read this just now. Well, being a Muslim myself, I have this to say.

First of all, yes, I am offended with the game's depiction of the Prophet. (I didn't see the original screenshot.) It's not even intelligent commentary - just a bunch of halfwit Italian programmers trying to stir up controversy. But everyone's entitled to free speech. And to those that referred to anyone who objects to this as "fuckwits" and "nutjobs"...that's really insightful.

Don't even get me started on the Danish cartoons controversy.

But I will say this...I'm pretty impressed at many of the comments on this site. I expected to read a bunch of comments criticizing Muslims and their lack of a funny bone when it comes to religion. It breeds hope that there's more tolerance and understanding than stupidity in the world. Or at least, amongst gamers. :)

Why isn't there a sanitized version for Christians or Jews or Buddhists or Scientoligists? Basically it's to give the creators a way out for fear of physical violence from one group. This seems to be happening everywhere. People are afraid of threats from one specific group but they'll still poke fun at the others because they know there won't be any violence from those groups.

Also, there have been countless physical representations of Muhammad drawn by Muslims throughout history. Most of those depictions are Iranian or Mongoloid though, not Arabic. So this modern phenomenon of protests and violence seems to be at odds with certain historical periods of Muslim history. The ban on representations is from the Qur'an where it says to not make graven images (like in the first commandment of the bible, which has been interpreted differently by Christians or else there wouldn't be any European artwork for us to look at). The prohibition on Muhammad's image seems to be merely an extension of the graven images verse coupled with the reverance Muslims have for him as the "seal of the prophets."

This game isn't offensive. It's just silly. I'm a staunch Christian and I'm not offended. I even played as Mo. It's sad that people would get offended over this, but hey, let your students vote to name a teddybear Muhammad and people will riot asking for your death like in the Sudan.

Even if I don't agree with someone else's religious views or even their religion, it should never lead to war or the death of another person. Militant, radical religious nuts aren't good news for anyone.

It's funny too, because MY own personal religion is one of the main culprits of this, however, don't think of all Christians as conservative, homo-phobic, flag-waving, racist, red necks. Actually, America hasn't been the capital of Christian activity for a long time, common misconception, at the moment it's probably either South Korea or China.

I honestly have ministers who have told me not to make the same mistakes as their generation did, and I don't plan to. I wish more people (atheists included) would view each other with a sort of "agree to disagree" aesthetic. Want to talk religion? Why not just have a debate or do it over dinner? Who the heck decided we needed guns?

I'll just give a quick link that I found by typing in "Old Testament Trinity" into google ([www.godandscience.org] - the relevant part is closer to the bottom of the page). It has the numerous recorded Bible verses from the Old Testament re: the trinity of God. A Christian would argue that from the very beginning God's plan was always the same, and that he has always been a triune God, and that Jesus HAS always existed. Some would even argue that appearances by a "messenger from the Lord" refers to Jesus in several cases throughout the OT.

The point you are bringing up (in the quoted paragraph) relates to the thinking of who would come, and indeed the whole Old Testament is the telling of the story of man who was desperately in need of a Savior. The "split", if any, comes in who that Messiah would be. Christians believe it was Jesus Christ, Jews do not.

To be sure, I'm not certain whether Jews would agree in a trinitarian concept - but to me it's clear that the Gods that we worship are different, if one includes the sonship of Jesus Christ and the other one doesn't.

This may be where our difference in thinking had been all along - me thinking from the start that the trinity of God was inherent from the beginning of the Bible and you not.

Though people may worship differently, and though there are multiple denominations, I see this as no evidence that God's character has changed or does change. I would disagree with the statement "There is no one true character of God" (Hebrews 13:8). I'll admit, I had to look up essentialism, and with only a quick read-over I'm still not quite sure of what you've said I'm approaching, so I'll simply say this: God is a triune god, complete in himself - he has always been God and always will be God, and does not change. God is equated with all goodness and virtue, and everything that is good and virtuous came from Him. That is what I mean by the character of God.

The books (i.e. the Apocrypha and other writings), in general, do not conflict with the Biblical teachings. The main difference that comes with it all, though, is whether or not people deem those books important enough to have in the Bible. Beyond some historical chatter, they don't appear relevant. How do we know that? There were councils (council of Nicaea - [en.wikipedia.org]) filled with church leaders who worked to weed out the obvious fake literature and the unnecessary documents that people were using. It was necessary because many fake documents were circulating around at that time and it seemed a unified text was in order. There's a lot more that could be said on that, but, to keep things shorter than they would have been, that text has been accepted by nearly all (the catholics and some others also prefer to use the Apocrypha) since the council.

As with all translations from one language to another, certain words come to have different nuances than others, certainly, but I would argue that the spirit of the text and the Word of God has remained the same. If you would like a verse or two on why I believe this, just let me know. If you'd rather have historical backing on this, there's a lot of good stuff to read re: the council of Nicaea, etc.

I will say that what I believe about this is definitely grounded deep within my faith - but I don't think that makes it any less credible. Hopefully, at the very least, I showed you why it would be difficult to call the God of the OT both ultimately the same God as in Judaism and Christianity.

I'm a little nervous that people here will start getting annoyed at this conversation, but I won't shy away if you have any objections or questions. Perhaps you could shed some light on this "essentialism" thing and why you find a problem with it.

Other than that, though, my wrists are kind of tired, and I need to grab dinner.

There is no one true character of God. Different denominations have different interpretations of the Bible and different worship practices. Some even have different books that are accepted as scripture. The number of books in the New Testament has changed over the years. Some books have fallen out of favor and others have fallen into favor. The meaning of the text itself has changed with every translation. Your view of God is an essentialist's view. I find essentialism to be highly problematic.

As far as there being no arguments in the Torah, the New Testament, and the Quran, I would say that you have your three different arguments right there.

Which means to say Im not particulary offended, most muslims will probably get "OMG thas so wrong" impression around the level of a certain video of two girls and a cup (I was rescued from seeing that, thank God) and usually laugh/shiver it off. Honestly anyone who gets more offended by the depiction of a prophet than the depiction of God is more offended culturally than religously. Though they do have good reason for the latter. And to be that offended by this by ways of the former is just stupid.

That said it recognize my up down attacks... stupid game... Little Fighter 2 beats this into blasphemy

No, it's not a "sin" for someone to put up a picture of Muhammad - Islam forbids it because, if I remember correctly (sorry to any Muslims if I butcher your views), the prophet Muhammad himself did not want people to turn him into a Jesus figure - he did not want to be put up on a pedestal, he wanted people to remember Allah's words (Quran / Koran) instead of his role of remembering them.

If the game is really supposed to be about presenting difficult imagery that we're supposed to contend with on an ethical level (a position I can support, though I don't think this game does a great job of it) why sanitize that imagery for a particular group of people?

The reason I think the game fails is because it doesn't really address the issues at hand: first of all, it ascribes fault to the deities themselves rather than the most fanatical of their followers. Second, it doesn't really portray the way in which religion is misused to reach violent ends; instead it seems to depict a sort of Greek ethos where human suffering is a result of feuds between gods. Third, it cheapens the religions in general by misrepresenting their views (Muslims, for example, view Jesus as a prophet, and Christians still believe in the Judaic God.) A good work of satire or criticism should hit hard but fair, and this does neither.

If you can trust the creators of this game, they're trying to get people to think differently about religious intollerance, while Adult Swim is just going for the easy offensiveness of having Bible characters take it outside.

Although, for all of Molleindustria's efforts, I'd be surprised if this had any positive effects. Those offended by the game will either avoid it or try to verbally lynch its makers and players, while anyone open-minded enough to try it probably wasn't myopic in the first place.

In short, a few people will chuckle, more will shrug it off, and potentially more will just become upset.
