On a scale of 1 to 10, it's usually around a 7 for me with moments of 8's and sometimes 4's or 5's. Penny Arcade, on the other hand, is usually also very good, but for me it ranges around a consistent 8 with rare moments where it falls to a 3 or 4, but it also can hit a solid 10 which CAD has never really done for me.

VGCats is hardly ever funny to me though. I'd rate most VGCats around 4.

PA's great because of the accompanying news posts and its commentary on the games industry (sorta like the Simpsons, I guess), whereas CAD has great idiosyncratic characters, a storyline (though it's been awhile since anything new developed...), and the occasional MINDBLOWINGLY HILARIOUS strip in between the pretty good ones. Nuklear Power is just silly, but I love it anyway. VGCats has absolutely hilarious art (especially the facial expressions) with lots of classic strips, but of course it NEVER updates anymore.

Also, Sam and Fuzzy is really great. Anyone read that? I'd say the only popular webcomic that I DON'T like is PVP; I seldom find it all that funny. Clever, maybe, but it evokes more of a "hmmm, I suppose that is a witty joke," than actual laughter.

I never played FF8, but that "press-R2-when-you-strike" sounds a lot like Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga's combat system (where you have to press "A" or "B" at the right time to increase the effectiveness of the attacks). If that's the case, then yes it would turn me off. I like RPGs to be tactical/strategic, not reflexive.

It's a personal preference. It may sound like a tiny thing to someone who enjoys that sort of skill-based gameplay in their RPGs, but for me it's a big deal, especially when there are other games vying for my time. I think it's the same for all gamers: When you've got half-a-dozen games to play, you'll ignore the ones with gameplay mechanics that don't appeal to you.

The comic scenes look nifty, but everything else looks bad. My expectations are low for this one. I'm guessing 40-60% reviews, with perhaps a 10% bump for the people who think the majority of PA comics are hilarious, even though they aren't.

PA has enough fans that buy any game PA recommends to probably recoup the obviously low budget on this one, but I look forward to seeing how PA spins the game's critical flop, following years of their own bashing of all sub-par gaming.

I guess my expectation is to laugh as much as I do when reading the comic. I'm not getting that at the moment...

Things it needs:
- Zooming onto the character performing the super move
- Combat mini-games with more humor (this is where the game references can come in)
- Voice-overs!
- More interactive/animated scenery (less battle-wander-battle situations)

Of course, all this criticism comes from just seeing three clips, but that's what comment boards are for, right?

The bottom one seems to be items, the middle is a basic attack, and the top is a special attack, which has some sort of minigame attached to it. After you choose something to make a character do, the circles start charging to allow you to make another move. The item one charges fast, then the basic attack starts a slower charge, and finally the special attack starts an even slower charge, and that seems to be how the battle system works from what I saw.

Please tell me if I'm completely wrong or if that's old news.

cad was good for a year or two, but somewhere he forgot about games and tried to create some kind of sitcom, and he has no skill for it. when he sticks strictly to games, he's usually pretty good. however, despite the "RoMicide" Tim isn't a bad guy either, and tries to do a lot of good for both games and charity stuff as well.

On the actual trailer the gameplay looks okay, I like that they took a more paper mario approach to the whole ordeal then a straight up jrpg but I'm still hoping they'll balance the game so that there isn't so much combat you get sick of it. Tim himself, however, I have no love for. Apparently he gdisbanded his Dark Iron WoW guild because he didn't want to be a part of it anymore, leaving all the other players still in the guild who didn't have any problems to find each other again and rebuild from the ashes. His comic outside of Chef Brian... all pretty forgettable. The sad thing is, he spends all his time on his least interesting character and doesn't bother to do anything significant.

]]> <![CDATA[Penny Arcade Game Gameplay Videos]]> Man i feel like an asshole criticising this game because a) I haven't bloody played it and b) i really like Penny arcade comics, as well as what those guys are doing for gaming as a whole.

This footage though.. I dunno, i guess there's some kind of joke to the turn based combat, but i've hated that kind of JRPG combat since forever (yes, roll for initiative is a d&d joke, no, this is not d&d combat), and like a movie whose one joke is that the entire film is jam packed with the most obvious clichès imaginable, in the end it's just another clichèed movie.

For turn based combat to really sit tight with me it needs to be very tactical stuff indeed, and i loathe the "ok everybody get in line for FIGHTING!" style of JRPGs, where the only real tactical choice is wether to take damage or dish it out.

To me Penny Arcade was a nobrainer for a point and click adventure; what this is is another universe like the ones inhabited by the cardboard tube samurai or twisp & catsby, ONLY it's got a mashup of every character they've done somewhere in there, which to me kind of disconnects the whole fabric of the thing.

Maybe they nail it, i dunno. I just think the combat, in spite of occationally funny words (BIG TEXT), looks like somewhat of a one-trick pony. I hope that's not all there is.

Back on topic though, when I first heard about a PA game I was amused because I thought it was all a big joke they were pulling on us. Hey, I bet some of you thought the same things at first. But as more and more details started coming around I began to get really excited. But these videos have actually cooled my interests slightly. Of course, the writing will always be the most important part of a PA game so I will wait and see before passing final judgement.

Those mechanics are rarely fun and quickly become a grind, let's hope that their writing is funny and witty enough to compensate for this.

Sam and Max could really do with some competition on the point and click front, I've only the free Abe Lincoln episode, but it was an empty facsimile of a proper adventure.
