It was a life time thing, not a single year that the PS2 sold 100 million units. So for them to be making 10 mil a year is quite natural, in the last 3 years of the system. The PS2 isn't even comparable, because it's just a phenom in itself. I'd say normality is about 50 million maybe 10 mil higher.

Oddly 'Wii' sales are the wierd thing this time around, simply put given the market history - it shouldn't be selling like this... from the demand charts I don't see the demand going down at all - it's just going up 15-30% every 3 months.

It would be scary if nintendo could meet those demands O.o

Sony/MS (especially this next year, now that ms sold off much of their stables) dont have as many flagships - the ones they do, like halo, as you noted, bank. But for me, i kinda dig this, it means the ship's not attatched to milking blasto/spyro/abe/crash/etc, but leaves room for new IPs, such as Uncharted. As you said, Uncharted sadly didnt bank, but its an amazing game nonetheless, and if the words "progressive gamer" can hit your ears without sounding like "wanker", id run with that label.

Problem is, this thread's about yearly sales, not my tastes, so you're right, it didnt help sony much last year, and without a big halo for next year, it'll likely not help MS either, compared to say, the next Mario Party.

Seriously, the only big title for the 360 that I know to be coming soon is NGII, and that game's release isn't even set in stone. Only other title that would come to mind is Gears2, and that one doesn't even have a year of projected release picked yet.

I know a lot about Sony's PS3 lineup for this year. I'm looking forward to MGS4, LBP, Home, White Knight Story, and Resistance II at the least. And I can name just the one game for the 360 that has my attention. It's insulting to be called "lazy" on that, when I haven't heard anything about any other hotly-anticipated titles despite spending an abhorrently large period of time on this site. If you don't want to help me learn, that's fine, but you definitely didn't need to be flippant.

actually the market is quite predictable at this point. As we've seen the Xbox 360 has had steady sales from year to year; not really increasing that much. And it's halo franchise is gone now (unless you count Halo Wars)

The PS3 is not only continuing to rise in sales, but some of it's best games aren't even out yet (MGS4, FFXIII, GTAIV, etc...) Also let's not forget that it is inevitable that blu-ray will win the DVD format war thereby boosting the PS3's numbers even more.

Now of course this is all speculation and there is no way of knowing if it will happen the way i've shown, but I thank we can agree that looking at the data shows the PS3 is in favor of outselling the 360 soon.

I've actually damaged my Left Analog stick thanks to pressing it to run in COD4, and I haven't had it for even a month. The buttons weren't built to be pressed at length, and COD4 forces it because you can't customize your controls.

Seriously, you cannot compare growth rates once a business if nearing a maximum value. The 360 was out for an entire year in 2006 where the PS3 was just released. You might as well go back an additional year for the 360 and compare December 2005 to December 2006 on the PS3 if you want a more accurate growth rate comparison. Better yet, let's see if Sony can pass Microsoft's 2.3% December growth rate next year.

For the record, in December 2005 the 360 sold 607,000 consoles in the US. I think you can do the math since you seem to be pretty good with numbers, but that looks like it destroyed Sony's 38.4% PS3 growth rate to me.

The trouble with the PS3 is that it's premised on two things: Gamers being patient to see better than Xbox 360 graphics as soon as possible and video consumers seeing enough of an incentive to ditch DVD's and adopt the Bluray format, both of which have proven false.

Personally, I see a huge difference between DVD and Bluray but there are a lot of people who don't and these people aren't going to be replacing their DVD's anytime soon.

Nintendo is not winning on (so-called) cutting edge graphics and PS2 is dong very well. I think it's time the hardware makers, make it so that console life spans last a whole lot longer. Console lives have become too short and no one is getting any milage off of video games on the development side and the player side. And everyone is spending too much money. And there as a result too many sequels...

"Everyone breaks even when they are happy with what they have." Upgrades shouldn't be necessary until, graphically at least (for an example) you can't tell you're looking at a video game anymore. Not a single thing on any console looks better or as good or even "animates like" as Advent Children or even the Incredibles. (Killzone "cough" "cough")

And DS does incredibly well and so do not so "visually" impressive fares like WoW and even (duh!) Wii.

Even the original Game Boy lasted over eight years, trouncing every opponent colorized or not. It's a "proven" formula, and one where clearly everyone wins.

But, I have no hope in execs' sooo... I'll eventually go back to usual Sony bashing when they quickly forget and announce Play-station 4... Sigh...

The real test will be comparative sales of Japanese multiplatform games that appeal to a more global, rather than a shooter-obsessed American audience. Show me the Xbox 360 version of Devil May Cry 4 outselling the PS3 version worldwide by a 2:1 margin, and I'll finally believe Sony is in real trouble. Until then, I think they'll do just fine in 2008. Sony has global appeal and their strategy has always been about winning globally, this reflects in their sales.

I totally agree. My ultimate concern is for developers to see the PS3 as a console worthy of more time and thus better ports. If the PS3 can catch up to the 360, and even surpass it one day then there's absolutely no reason for major developers not to make the PS3 the lead (aside from moneyhats,etc..)

I could care less if they finish in 3rd, just as long as they get a great library of games, and equal or superior ports when compared to the 360.

I'm not interested in seeing Sony win or Microsoft win this generation because I think that whole idea of someone winning is childish and a bad mentality for this industry.
