This statistic is full of BULLSHIT!!! The problem is with the stats on the sales of portable game systems.

Gameboy Advance and DS and PSP are consoles that can be lost, and or stolen, and are much more likely to be dropped.
I would love to know how many spoiled brats actually lost their DS on the bus or dropped it in skool and now DEMAND MOMMY to buy them another one.
Game sales for a console play a big role in whether or not a system survives.

The myth that Wii doesn't sell much software is just that, a myth. The fact is that Wii has sold more software year 1 than any other system in history thanks to record hardware sales and a worldwide tie-ratio of 5. So what if Wii Play is #1? It has outsold every 360 and PS3 game as well (WW) and will probably keep selling until the end of the generation. Core games like Mario Galaxy and Zelda are still selling incredibly (both completely destroy the best selling PS3 games and are only beaten by Halo 3 of the 360 games) and there're a bunch of third party million sellers as well. (Red Steel, Rayman, Resident Evil 4, Guitar Hero 3, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.) The only systems with lacking software sales are the PS3 and PSP, both for slightly different reasons. PS3 owners aren't buying much software to begin with and this problem is magnified due to the fact that there aren't that many of them to begin with. PSP owners seem to use their systems for all sorts of things unrelated to gaming, which isn't THAT much of a problem for Sony as they profit from the hardware, but for third parties and people wanting to play games on the system it's unfortunate.

Really interesting point from these stats is not Wii vs PS2 (who cares? it's already clear that this generation is more even, and we'd need to wait four years or so to get a good idea on that question) but Wii vs 360 - even if Wii manages to maintain its sales advantage (which I expect it will do if, and only if, Wii Fit is a success) it still is more than a year before the userbase overtakes 360 in the US.

Of course, it already has done so in the rest of the world - but for some types of games, US market is more important than Japan or Europe.

I think Software sale totals are more impressive than Hardware sales....especially as Wii owners don't buy a ton of games (Most I know haven't bought anything besides Wii PLAY for the extra remote).

@Adam: I have to agree with you. A friend of mine lent me his Wii second week of last month. I played Super Mario Galaxy for a few hours, had some fun, but then I got a PS3 for Xmas...I have not touched the Wii since then. Sure, most of the games besides Warhwak are multiplatform, but I have enough gaming goodness to last me till the big guns like MGS4 come out.

Well considering the PS3 hasn't had many great games yet (Metal and Final are coming hopefully in the same year) and that the 360 has shot it's (Halo)wad. I'm interested in seeing how the next year's numbers compare.

It's also pretty clear that Nintendo is in an entirely different market. Smash brothers is the only game out for the Wii right now that I actually want. That's it. Everything else looks kind of fun, but not worth picking that as my main console. Which just shows I'm not in the target demo for Wii (casual gamers). Which means that MS and Sony are going to fight over the traditional video game market.

I'm also surprised about the GBA more than the PS2, personally. I always thought the PS2 had the "juice," so to speak. I guess the 360 is trying its best to be most like the PS2 by trying to put together a really big library with the mid-range performance (like how the original Xbox was really the most powerful of last generation, similar to how the PS3 is the most this gen.) We'll see if they pull it off. They still got a ways to go in branching out from shooters, which seems to have been their hallmark thus far. Hopefully, we'll see more stuff like Mass Effect or some kind of original Adventure franchise pop up.

I still think this is the year for the PS3 to show its stuff though. I really hope it's not gonna let me down...

@Volcan: Ironically Wii Sports was the only game I didn't get.

Played some Mario Galaxy, which I do admit was brilliant... but, still just a mario game (I may take some flack for that statement), super monkey ball, which got tired really fast, and Metroid, which, having played PC FPS titles since the early days just pissed me off. Finally I tried out some Madden, and while fun with a buddy... not so fun by yourself.

I think I gave the Wii a pretty fair shake. Still not interested long term. And have no plans to buy one. Maybe when my son gets a little older.

That said, I will be quite worried if Super Smash Brothers Brawl doesn't give Wii Play a run for its money. SSBB is going to be an awesome game, no doubt, but I wonder how many casual players will prefer it to minigame collections.

I know at least 10 people who bought the Wii as a Wii Sports/Wii Play machine and when I recommend a game to them they say, nah, I'm happy with it and Transformers/The Golden Compass for the kids.

That's scary because if I was publishing a game I have 2 high selling systems to gun for (PS2 and Wii) but one seems to not care about any game that's not a collection of minigames or a licensed property (Wii) and the other one is probably enjoying its last year.

BTW: The 360 has its demographics well defined and the PS3 still doesn't have the installed base to make developers comfortable. The industry as a whole might be booming but I can't shake the feeling that there will be another crash soon.

Sony makes money from Bluray Disc licensing too so I seriously doubt they will be hurt if people just bought a PS3 for the sole purpose of playing BD movies. I personally have a collection of 7 Bluray titles, far more than the number of games I have for the PS 3.

Some people get angry at the fact that the PS3 is being used by a proportion of PS 3 owners just for watching hi-def movies. Well, that is one of its major selling features and like Xbox Live is a significant source of alternate revenue for Sony. In fact, there have been some discussions over which of the two represent a larger potential revenue stream for Sony, Bluray or games.

Anyone else find it awesome, but strange, that almost 1/6th of America owns a PS2?

I can only imagine, though, the absolute slaughter of the DS over the PS2 in Japan. Everyone owns like 5 of those things. And maybe a PS2. I stopped believing in buying replacement playstations after I replaced my PS with a PS1 and finally got a PS2 for my birthday once. After the CD drive on that died I said "screw it" and bought a PS3 right before they started sucking more at lower prices. Obviously a sign that Sony is, in fact, in the Pimping business.

@thejakeman: Is unoriginal: I'm not really trying to say that the Wii is inevitably going to fail. I'm just saying that, from my experience, there are a lot of people who bought the Wii because of the hype and now it just sits there. However, even though they don't play the thing, they continue to keep the system. Eventually, these people are going to get sick of the thing sitting there and sell them rather than just keeping them around.

I usually play Warhawk when I'm on. Other than that, I'm available for Resistance and Guitar Hero but those are really the only online games I have so far. My PSN is timmaythesped if you were interested. (Yea, I know, it's a bit ironic that I have such a username when I'm doing a plunge that is in support of the special olympics, but that's mainly because I'm one of those people that joke about anything and don't mean any harm out of things I make fun of. That, and it was ironic that the local radio station has a pay for play for the plunge where you donate a certain amount of money to have anything you want played and the DJ that took my request was Short Bus Don, who was also featured on this site for his basement arcade, and no, I didn't purposely have him be the one to take my request)

For the record (as has been mentioned by others), the PS2 is a 7 year old console that sells for $130. And its very popular.

In other news, the PS3 sold less units in its first year than the 360 did in its first year.

My question: what would happen if MS drops the price of the 360 around $100 this year? Does it start to hit mainstream sales numbers? And if you don't think they've positioned themselves to do that, you haven't been paying attention.

PS2, I'm not nearly as surprised as I could be. It's a great system and has more games available to it than pretty much anything else that exists. It'd probably take an entire lifetime just to beat half the RPGs that exist for it.

@thejakeman: Is unoriginal: my wii has sat there gathering dust for a long time, its not a fact of not buying games, but its the games themselves. only 3 games have kept my interest for more then a few days(zelda, mario, and zack & wiki). but those games that were good didn't last very long, i honestly think it the wiimote. for games like wii sports the wiimote is perfect, but no matter what, i cant get used to playing a traditional game with it. i've ended up using the gamecube controller for every game that supports it.
i realize im not exactly who the wii is targeted at(im more of a hardcore gamer than a casual gamer), but it should still be a fun experience.

on a side note: the wii's VC is top notch, and is a lot of fun

I see a lot more PSP's on the subway than I do DS's in NYC. Hell the only DS I've seen on the subway have either been the one I'm holding, or one in the hands of a child. As for the PSP's, I find most people are listening to music on it more than actually playing games.

To the person who wondered why there aren't any new PS2 games coming out. Think about it. Why come out with a new game for the PS2? Wouldn't you rather just make it for the Wii and then port it out onto the PS2?

Good old interesting sales figures, although I dont know why everyone is getting all pumped about hte PS2 sales. Its been out for nearly 10 years ofcourse its gonna have high figures.

Another thing that hits me as odd is how the wii is always compared. I dont see the Wii as a next gen console personally.(not saying its a bad console, just that its in a differant bracket than the rest when it comes to sales) The real important figures here should be sales over time(ie. how many the PS3 and 360 sold over the year) and overall sales of the PS3 and 360. Assuming you care about either really.

In anycase, I dont see any relevance in praising the PS2 sales, most people are probably just replacing their units this year, I mean, the thing broke down more than the 360.(on my 5th PS2)

I just don't know who is right. Wikipedia says 13.17 million total for the Wii. NexGenWars and VG Chartz say something else. Now there's this.

The only way that these numbers would add up is if these sales only pertain to North America.See below:

PS2- 39.1 million (as of September 1, 2007)
Wii- 5.46 million as of September 30, 2007
XBOX 360- 6.3 million (as of September 1, 2007)
PS3- 2,105,500 (as of November 8, 2007)
DS- 16.06 million (as of September 30, 2007)

@xbulletholes: Yes my comment merely reflects on the fact that the total sales for the PSP is not bad considering the PSP has been around a similar length of time and nobody has been hitting on MS for absolutely lame sales. Whilst on the other hand the population perception is that the PSP is a failure.

@ ALL THE HANDHELDS CAN'T BE COMPARED TO THEIR EXPENSIVE CONSOLE BRETHREN...

By your own reasoning I hope you also equate the PSP's sales on a much more expensive product than the DS to be roughly equal to the DS.

In a similar vein of thought do we need to discount some of the Wii sales from the total since that console is so much cheaper than the other home consoles?

I think the real question in that matters is software sales. That it where retailers and devs feel the pain. I can assure you if the 360 only had a userbase of 5 million, but every user bought a copy of every game the system would become the most successfully supported console ever.

@bobbus-maximus: It's those damn articles about old people playing the Wii. The local newspaper actually had an article about it again last week. How man times do we need to read that same article? We know that old people play the Wii. It's almost as if there is a conspiracy to get the more kid friendly system to succeed in a back door attempt at getting violence and drugs out of games. That, and all the articles talking about how the Wii is a good exercise tool. I honestly feel like I get more of a workout from Guitar Hero than I do playing the Wii. That's probably only because I'm into music more than the average person and just the music that I'm listening to can sometimes dictate my pulse, so just playing a fast song can get me going, without factoring in the furious strumming and the exaggerated guitar moves.I think though, that there are a lot of Wiis that don't get played, too, but people feel that at $250, they can afford to not resell that system that they don't play anymore as opposed to the $500 PS3 that people sell when they don't play it anymore because it was such a big investment. I know that if my PS3 got as little play as my Wii does I would have resold it, but I still have my Wii. Eventually, though, at least the older people that bought it will have their girlfriend/wife nagging them about the little white thing that just sits there not being used and that they should get rid of it. Then, you will probably start seeing more used Wiis on eBay and at yard sales.

I really do feel like that, I love my PS3 but even I have to admit to myself that I could GLADLY have waited another year. But something tells me it all has to do with winning the format war, maybe they were scared that hd-dvd would get ahead too far and win. If Sony drops the PS2 down below $100 this year, that number could fly even higher. If Sony is finally breaking even on the PS3, I wouldn't be too surprised to see a price drop on the 40 or for the system to stay the same price but pick up a second controller and a game instead of Spiderman 3 on blu-ray, especially since they should hopefully have the format war wrapped up by then.

My 2cents...

Wii wont overtake PS2's lifetime, not in US or worldwide, I even bet Nintendo would release a new Wii before that happens. What is amazing is that it is becoming the best selling next gen console, not yet but it will. Nice work Wii! But if it wants to stay number 1 and sell more software, then Nintendo needs to step up more then they have with third party support and keep pumping out first party at fast pace, not to mention improve on their online component.

PS2 is still VERY much alive, and another price cut my put it in lead or second place to the DS anyway in "new" sales. That is something I think people sometimes forget, something that is pretty insane! Question is, how much does Sony profit from this? Do they want PS2 to keep selling, even taking some sales from the PS3 perhaps.

The PSP, not first but doing great at second place, I can see it growing a lot more with FF and GoW coming out. Nice to see it is making a comeback! But software sales are bad. Does Sony make profit now on every PSP made? I'm not sure. How much profit have they made period on the PSP.

Xbox 360 is king of the states but... Still just barely sell more 360's then previous year in the US. And that is on top of a great 2007 in terms of number of titles 360gamers like. The strong point for the 360 is software sales, and I suspect digital download sales, any figures released on that? How much they made on XBLA games and themes etc? Still, the 360 is being overtaken in its own territory by the Wii. Something one can't deny, and I hope MS do something to increase growth, unless this is what to expect on yearly basis.

Playstation 3... You did manage to pick up at the end of the year on the holiday sales, but it is still bad. Software sales ain't great, even some first party titles tank even though they are good and digital marketplace? Who knows and the system itself is just breaking even now in terms of cost, and are still big in the negative margin with all costs producing and developing the PS3. What will it take? Blu Ray most likely won, they won, and many AAA titles are comming this year not to mention Home and firmware updates adding to the quality. So if it doesn't sell twice then it is now at the end of 2008, then the PS3 have failed in the US, also, the PS3 stands the risk that it might be picked up by many as a Blu Ray player, but people won't buy software for the console, and if Sony just breaks even they still loose out to the competition.

(Why did I write this whole thing? Maybe I should just work on my humor and post a 1 liner next time :P)

@PlayerX: Even though the DS installed base dwarfs that of the PSP, I see far more people on the subway here in NYC playing the PSP than I do playing the DS. It's crazy--the ratio is something like 4:1. Also, for what it's worth, I've noticed that the PSP players on the subway are almost overwhelmingly African-American, while DS players are more likely to be white.

I own a Wii, so I say this after great consideration, but I think that the Wii may be killed this year by crappy software. I mean, it has an install base comparable to the 360, but the 360 has sold waaayyy more software, and will probably continue to do so until something changes.

If the #1 selling "software" on the Wii is Wii Play, Nintendo has some work to do... they can't keep handing out extra controllers forever.

Of course, even if the attach rate for the Wii was 2, Nintendo would still make money. Such is their genius.

The Wii hardware and software specs are mediocre and the 360 has mediocre manufacturing. Both things are true. You don't see the 360 fanboys vomiting out text and then going "fixed!" While hardware sales are somewhat important, what really drives continued support is game sales, more to the point...3rd party sales.

So what we need to know is the attach rates of the consoles and total 3rd party units sold per system.

You can sell 20 million consoles a year but if people arent buying games it makes no damn difference.

@MrBrains: The DS/PSP shouldn't be compared to the 360/PS3/Wii because they aren't even on the same category. It's hardly fair to compare a cheap handheld to a full fledged console, I mean people buy PSP's for all kinds of reasons. I know someone who bought one just to have a movie and mp3 player.

i still dont beleive that the wii will have the lifespan that the PS2 had(mainly through the lack of 3rd party games). the DS will though, it has proven its worth time and time again.
@worthyexpress: yeah, i sold my wii as well. it just didnt live up to the hype and i only played a couple of times when friends were over(now we play rockband)

@zerbrechen: Seems you dont understand that PS2 is a last gen console, and it actually almost sold as good as the 360 (which I actually thing PS2 outsold 360 worldwide). It even outsold the PSP.

I understand its a 7 year old console so the total numbers are meh

but the 07 numbers are whats impressive (especially when the only good game were Guitar Hero 3 and GOW2 IMO)

Jeebus that's a lot of consoles. It's really no wonder that Sony went into this generation with the attitude that consumers would pay anything for a console with the word Playstation on the side of it. Now Sony seems to be learning the hard way that past performance doesn't guarantee future results.

I just bought a DS and PSP last month, love em both. I was planning on getting a Wii, but I borrowed a friends... played it for about an hour and then it sat unused for the rest of the week. So I don't get why the Wii numbers are so high.

wow, i didn't figure i'd get so many replies :] yeah, i know that the NPD is only for US figures but taking into the account the other "gamer nation" and its enthusiasm for the 360 (almost nonexistent) it still seemed sort've odd.

I figured it was either a problem in the estimation (NPD makes totals with sampling data) or the equation (maybe people who sold/no longer play their 360 still counted in MS's count of paying LIVE users)

and of course i got a variety of different answers, mainly that this was the US only. (does this mean that the 360 has only sold maybe 2 mil elsewhere in the non-US world combined?)

@MrBrains: The PSP hasn't "outsold" the Xbox 360. As this year's numbers show, in fact the 360 is catching up. Moreover, the PSP has been around for 8 extra months. But most importantly - comparison of console and handheld sales is largely irrelevant, since they are not in direct competition.

Yeah the 360 had an amazing year in 2007. SO many awesome games came out in the holiday season. I don't even have to mention any names there were too many good titles. I'm not suprised that PS2 has top sales, its a great console for its price. As for the PS3 aswell, i'm not suprised its at the bottom, its very expensive and personally I don't like the games on it.

@Mit: Um, the 360 sold just about 7 million units in 2007. It did better the year before (counting 2005 as well). Therefore I would not say that'd be a good development for the PS3.
