I just don't understand why they chose this guy to play Goku's role. I have to admit, it does bother me that the main protagonist in the movie is a caucasian guy, rather than an Asian male. Thank God I stopped being a DB fan a long time ago (you know, when I grew up).
This movie will surely be shit, not unlike the anime, really (10-year old me would go berserk if he/me heard someone saying this about his beloved series). I find it hard to believe that any self-respecting person would take part in this, so I was shocked to see Chow Yun-Fat there. Really, what the hell is he doing there? And I don't know why Stephen Chow would want his name associated with this. I know he's only producing, but still...
Well, it's a given that I won't see this movie. Not that I ever intended to do it, anyway.

With all the butchering and watering down that has to be done to bring it here, to real fans, it won't be the same.

Sailor moon too had adult themes added to it, and calling Michiru and Haruka cousins. That made it a lot worse.

I don't really have a problem with the actor's attitude as Goku is kind of a goofball with a thick skull anyway. He just needs a little more enthusiasm because one thing Goku isn't is a stick-in-the-mud.

BTW, for this movie, I think he's meant to play Adult Goku.

I see this movie going one of two ways: they play straight-up versions of the characters with real-world shit like going to school and having stupid trouble with chicks (which will suck) or it could be a real dumb-fest full of some shitty west-hollywood writing and quips (which will double suck).

I've said before to wait for trailers before passing judgment but over the past few weeks after seeing early production photos and now this I'm beginning to lose optimism little by little. Chow Yun Fat is a good actor, but he's playing a secondary character. Stephen Chow is a good filmmaker, but he's limited to a producer's role and isn't directing.

Still hoping this turns out decent. On the other hand, if it sucks at least Hollywood won't be looking for, and subsequently destroy other favorite anime franchises of mine by turning them into live action adaptations. i.e. Naruto and Bleach.

@WGSXFrank: I'm well aware of the editing done to the Yu-Gi-Oh!. Not to be a asshole, but I didn't need a synopsis about the content removed, I referenced it because I already knew. I said it's about as adult oriented as Yu-Gi-Oh in terms of main audience from the original uncut version.

The Shonen, in Shonen Jump stands for "boy" in Japanese which is made to refer to the magazines target audience, which Dragon ball was featured in. I did say DBZ was for young teenage boys above, as well as children, but at my age, I don't see much difference. If it was published in as a Seinen manga, my opinion would be different.

Lastly, as I said, Cultural acceptance on what qualifies as being for adults vary by country. By American standards, uncut DBZ seems too adult but not by Japanese standards. Even though I'm a fan of DBZ, I can't honestly call it an adult or mature animation. That honor goes to shows/films like Paranoia Agent, Fire & Ice or Heavy Metal. Violence or Innuendo in DBZ doesn't make it any less juvenile no matter the version, but again, it's a matter of personal opinion and what individuals consider it.

@KeroseneClimax: You do know that there are quite a few things in Yu-Gi-Oh! that were removed from television because they were way too adult, right? For instance, knives and guns (which are more common than you think) were removed in the US version. Also, religious symbols were removed. Characters who died were altered to just be sent to the "Shadow Realm". Sexual innuendo was removed as well as all cases of nudity and "revealing clothing". Yami isn't actually the "nice pharaoh" that the American version makes him out to be. He is actually a demented deliverer of the shadow who sets a man on fire during one of his "games". In fact the whole first season was so demented that 4Kids entertainment wanted nothing to do with it.

On the same note. DB was meant for teens, not children. There is much sexual innuendo, a lot of fighting, blood, alcohol and guns. The American versions are very misleading.

DB WAS for children! It had the most hilarious juvenile humor! Boobs, poo, and lots of crazy characters. When the kids grew up to be teenagers, they changed it to DBZ. And it still was juvenile as hell, just in a different way. And I loved it! Then I grew up. I still fondly read the manga at times, though. It wasn't meant to be anything but silly entertainment. This movie will suck, though. I just hope it'll be so bad it's good.

Then perhaps this will actually have some decency; Chow is the current master of Chinese action sequences, so he might be able to pull of the ridiculousness of the fights. I think that I might go to see the DBZ movie with a bunch of friends so that, along with the Speed Racer movie, Hollywood decides to make more anime adaptations JUST so we could get material worth translating into the big screen.

Take that rumored Evangelion movie, for example. That's a movie I actually want made, and right now it seems to be in production hell. Fun.

@okenny :): There has been a Japanese Dragonball movie, last I checked, but it's one of those B-movies with terrible bad effects and---well, I think SomethingAwful covered it in one of their reviews, so I doubt this version will have much trouble in comparing the two.

DBZ -- a manga-inspired anime series that, when ported to America, was watered down and turned into children's fodder. Thankfully, the episodes have been redubbed as needed and been re-plugged with the original Japanese music, blood, sexual comments, and remastered into the Digitally Remastered episodes released every 3-4 months as seasons. I own the first 3. I'm eagerly awaiting the fourth. Some people see Dragonball Z as childrens programming. Those of us who have WATCHED more than a few episodes and have seen the anime movies, can rightfully say that they're definately not for children. They weren't orginally intended for children. For example, the Dragonball series (when Goku was a small child and before the Dragonball Z series), adult humor was a main part of the series' popularity. I think Dragonball Z should be respected by Americans for being the furst "successful" japanese anime series to really get over with Americans in general. And because of DBZ's breakthru, following anime series' have been ported to America the right way without being watered down and/or heavily edited. The most well-known being Naruto.
