but i like the idea of how it can run from a disc or usb drive! thats very handy!

it sounds like it will support plenty of file formats that the ps3 otherwise doesn't support.. so thats one huge benefit, from what i can see.

HDMI is supported. The version at www.gameblews.com is the proper updated version that was only given to a few. Just select option 3 from the petitboot loader. Te demo posted earlier on kotaku ar rapidshare is only a proof of concept, to show it working, tough there are no working modules, so no playback of video etc

The link provided earlier is NOT the real demo. It does not work in HDMI, and does not playback any files etc. There is however a REAL demo which is available at [www.gameblews.com]

So follow these details:

1. Install this on your PS3: [ozlabs.org]

2. Write this image on a disc (CD/DVD/...):
LINK AVAILABLE AT [www.gameblews.com]

3. Run the bootloader (from step 1) on your PS3

4. Put the newly written disc in your PS3 disc drive and select it from the boot loader
(remember to write disc from image)
5. Choose to run the second icon when prompted
6. Done
And this version DOES work using HDMI.

Please remember to back up all your ps3 data if you dont have a linux partition, else you will lose everything

@darknessgp, @djsyndrome: I spent yesterday running the Ubuntu and Debian live CDs on my PS3 without partitioning my hard drive. If this is the same idea, it's definitely possible to boot into another OS on PS3 using a flash drive without partitioning first.

Although I question how good of a media box it is considering it won't be able to access the PS3's HDD for a swap file, and the PS3 doesn't have a ton of RAM available in Linux. Hooking up an external USB HDD would be a little slow for swap.

I would be a proverbial kick in the nuts to Microsoft and make the PS3 even more useful. If they did it well they could replace my PC.

If they can get MKV Vorbis support, they have my support. One of the things I hate about all of the current software/hardware decoders for media extenders is their lack of support for MKV Vorbis. I have too many damned h.264 anime fansubs which I am forced to play on my PC because the subtitles will not appear.

petitboot is not a softmod. It is a bootloader. You can get the otheros.bld from Sony but others are also made, such as the petitboot one.

It allows you to boot to OtherOS. Yellow Dog Linux 5 comes with its own bootloader. I have not tried other distros of linux on my PS3, but I bet they come with their own bootloader as well.

The idea here is that you do NOT partition your HDD. I would try it out but I am not going to scrap my YDL install that I have taken so much time working on.

You don't need to install Linux on a seperate partition like YellowDog Linux it will run off a USB thumb drive.

I like the emulation part, I have the homebrew stuff on my PSP I can play PS1, GBA, Gameboy SP, Gamcube and Mame ROMs.
I recently finished playing Zelda: Minish Cap on my PSP! Awesome.

@SithNinja: Actually, you would have to set up the secondary (Linux) partition, which would nuke your current HDD's data. There is no way to get a PS3 to boot from a disc, except having the second partition. You may not install anything on it, but it still has to be there.

Guys this is not an iso loader. Its uses the same hypervisor as the boot other-os option. (It doesn't have fully access to the RSX so ps3 games won't run) Sony has no problem with this.

Sounds like the Linux based bootable feature set that someone else was pushing around on the net. It basically is like having Linux installed but without the drive space. And it does have some added features that most linux flavors would not give you right after install.

@ DJSYNDROME You can backup your PS3 HDD with the provided BU program onto a usb drive and not lose all your info/downloads.

The Spaniard is going to catch hell if hes running mame, VBA, and other emulators and not giving credit where credit is due.

Other then that this sounds very intriguing, however whats the speed of it like? I hope its very lean since you will be accessing a CD-Rom if you fill you registers.

THe great thing about this is: Sony doesn't mind this! They invite Linux programmers to release stuff like this for the PS3 as long as it's nothing illegal. This is why the PS3 is the best console out of the 3, and unfortunately why it's a premium purchase.

Worth noting that if you don't already have a partition set aside for Linux/OtherOS, you will have to nuke your hard drive's contents to get this installed.
