Mainly to introduce us to the new lead. But it doesn't demo the gameplay for newcomers as it ends right after the first presentation and doesn't include investigating. It's like a demo of Halo 3 that ends the first time you fire a gun, or a SMG demo with only one planetoid.

That being said it is a text adventure, more of an interactive story than a game, so if that doesn't sound good to you then yes you'll be bored by these games.

I can't count the times I was sitting during the game like "....OH NO HE DID NOT JUST DO THAT" or "WTF DID HE JUST TURN THE TABLES ON ME ???" etc. Makes the effort so much better but again, the gameplay isn't in the buttons.

Also, in 2 and on, you always move back and forth between a detective moment where you investigate crime scenes, and court moments like the one in the demo.
And yes you can speed up the dialogue.

]]> <![CDATA[Ace Attorney For Cheapskates]]> After having played the third Phoenix Wright game, I saw how the first 3 games make up 1 big story. Well sorta, there are some unrelated scenarios as well but the main chars have a role in all 3 games.

As some others before me have said, this isn't about how much buttons you press or fancy touch screen interaction. It's about fun characters and a humorous story. Also keep in mind that this is something that's typically popular in Japan, not neccesarily outside of Japan. Even so, the chaps and gals who had the task of localizing thes games apparantly had a field day with it because I think they did an amazing job.

So yeah, keep an open mind, play the first game at least, then decide if its worth your time to get the other games.

It's kinda like Achewood: if you start reading at the current comic, you're gonna be all "what the hell is this?", but if you go back through the archives and get to know the cast, it's fucking hilarious. Start at the first game, play them in order, and keep in mind that the gameplay is mostly just a delivery vehicle for some really great character-based humor.

You should -really- start off with the phoenix wright series first.
Not that you won't understand a thing without them, but still they were the first in the genre and they're still the best. Character developping takes all its sense in those, and I seriously doubt there is a way to be cooler than Phoenix, or at least Apollo is really far behind off now.

I am surprised a text based adventure game that only does well in Japan has a great niche fandom here.

The reason why some of you think its boring because all you do is read is because games like these which are text based adventure novels or dating sim style (choose you own response to try to attract/win a girls heart) are very popular in the Japanese culture.

While here we do not like reading and using our minds as well as comprehension.

The american culture would either rather enjoy platformers like Mario, Sports games or FPS (Shoot to kill) as choices of video games.

Please give Phoenix Wright and the New and upcoming Apollo Justice a chance. You do not just read all the time but you have fun trying to play lawyer and detective at the same time and the stories of the games are very funny in trying to solve and win courtroom trials.

But... It's kind of hard to get into, its just not the same without Edgy, Maya, and all of the other old characters.

Fortunatly they have planned to release (at least) one more Ace Attorney after this one.

They're all about the story... and since this is the beginning of a new series and new game, it starts slow. If you can find the original for 20 bucks or less, I'd recommend it.
