If I could possibly say, I love the Silent HIll series, but 2 was, BY FAR, the best I've played so far. 3 was... intersting, but some of the voice acting was awful and sorta destroyed the scary aspect at times. A for four, that game was awful. I think my main problem was the ghosts. I realize that they were trying to make it a little more unnerving by making monsters that couldn't die, but all they did was make really obnoxious monsters that made me lose interest in the game.

I do want to play Origins, though. I love playing in the actual town of Silent Hill.

ramzaw

@spork: I don't think it was a bad game design, I took it as intentional. There's a fine line though, between game design you may not like and game design that's broken and does not do what it's intended to do.
I agree on less monsters and much harder to kill.. but I like the fact they finally see and pursue you more aggressively, you can't as easily run away and you need to use energy drinks to keep up stamina.

as for control i think there were alternate control schemes for 2 and 3, but I can't recall. SH1 was my first console game (yes i'm not an NES child) and i found the movement to be really unintuitive until I learned it. I think the others had different movement options (3d and 2d versions? I could be thinking of another game though)

I may have not gotten to that part with Lisa yet. Lisa as I recall was addicted to white claudia and could possibly be under it's influence, and she wasn't in Alessa's memory. Just a guess as I haven't seen this part I don't think. Just got to the Hotel. I don't like the way Alessa is portrayed in SHO so far. Just sort of bland looking and acting.

Ehardergardens

@Ehardergardens: Increasing fear through bad game design seems really random. It's like saying the game's scarier when half the time you try to run, your character fails to do so. I've heard the theory about not touching the analog stick while stomping and it brought my success ratio from 40% to 70%. Still unacceptable IMO.

As for #2, i always thought it provided more fear when there was less monsters but they were harder to defeat. So you WANT to avoid them instead of basically fight each one. Which was really time consuming. I didn't even bother trying to sneak past them in the end after I got sick of killing respawning monsters. I just ran past them and had them chase me until they gave up.

For the movement scheme in SH1-3 forward = walk forward. Right = turn right, Left = turn left. It had nothing to do with the camera angle and everything to do with the direction your character was facing. The correct way to do it is the movement scheme should stay the same until the analog stick is released. That means if you're moving north and north is "up" to you, and the camera changes so north is "down" from you, then it should still keep "up" as north and if you move the stick to "up right" it should be north east, even though according to the camera you're moving the wrong way. If you let go of the analog stick then it should reset the directions to "up" being south due to the new camera angle. How it worked in SHO is it doesn't this ONLY if you're going in the same direction. If you go from "up" to "up right" it resets the movement scheme, which is counter intuitive IMO.

Lisa was afraid of all the weird stuff in SH1. In SHO she seems to revel in it. I find that very strange.

spork

@spork: 1 and 2 actually added to the fear.
Sh2 got dull quickly because of those 'features'.
I figured out you have to just hit x to stomp and not be touching the attack mode trigger. Frustrated me at first too.
Mostly I'm sneaking around inside with no flashlight.

The whole series has had the problem where you enter an area moving one direction and then it switches angles and you end up moving back out if you don't change your movement orientation. I recall this in all of them and I do notice it in Origins, but not a big deal for me.

I agree on 4....

The Lisa in silent hill 1 is only a memory from Alessa, is it not? Also she's a bit older in Alessa's memory.

Ehardergardens

@Nightshift_Nurse: Late to the party and this will probably not get seen but whatever.

1) the stomp mechanic was so broken i was literally tempted to scrap playing the game at many times. it made fighting 2 monsters at the same time near impossible.

2) too many monsters wandering the street and they see you from like 50000000000000 feet away. it's usually relatively easy to avoid monsters in the other silent hills. the second you see them, make sure you give them a wide berth. in SHO, the second you see them, they're running after you.

3) the movement scheme and camera angles were incredibly awkward. you have no idea how many times it got me hit in battle or lost. i really didn't like the camera angles too much in the game.

4) bad placement of healing items. i got a bunch in the beginning then went thru a long period without finding another one. then suddenly found more than i can use.

5) lisa, for one, acted very differently than i would've imagined her to especially from how she acted in SH1.

that said i thought the game was decent. just not great. :(

spork

I liked all the Silent Hills, thoroughly enjoying Origins (so far) and 4 was a grower, I just ignored all that had come before and took it for what it was. It's interesting to note that a lot of people hated Origins, although arguably the novelty of playing it on a portable device I also enjoyed.

TearsandScreams

@Witzbold: What formula? The only thing they changed significantly was the ability to freely change between light and dark worlds (which was explained to some extent by the story). Otherwise it plays out exactly like one would expect a companion piece to Silent Hill 1 to be.

My only real beefs with the game are as follows:

1) The mechanic for "finishing" enemies by stepping on them is broken and only works 25-50% of the time.

2) The game didn't really go into the Native American/early settler roots of the Silent Hill "cult" that were touched on in part 3.

Furthermore, having played through all four games (1 and 3 in particular have been played many times), I'd really like one of Origins detractors to actually explain in detail what is so fundamentally "broken" about it. Because 99% of the negative posts have been extremely vague.

Nightshift_Nurse

@Mavwick: You must have hated 2 as well as Maria was far stupider in 2 than eileen, and you must have been frustrated when she kept dying over and over? Just kidding. I understand, but didn't share that frustration. Walter Sullivan's bad AI spoiled things for me. He would just run around in a circle and it suddenly just felt like a video game.
I think the story in 4 was one of the better ones, and a better story than 3. 3 had great little horror pieces but the voice acting/dialog was a little silly.

I'm liking origins so far, but the boss in the theatre was kind of a dull and uninteresting generic boss fight.
I don't think the game is all that graphically amazing(it's good, but not even up to silent hill 2 in a lot of ways, except the flashlight which is better) They will need to update the graphics quite a bit for the ps2. The graphics in 3 and 4 were quite a bit better. I've played Silent hill 1 on the psp and Origins feels right at home with it.
And if that spoiler was correct on travis, I'm duobly annoyed. One having that spoiled, 2 having it seem now like PH is like Pinhead in hellraiser. bleagh....

Ehardergardens

@TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL): I dunno. Seems like the haters have overwhelmed this thread, but I've seen several articles involving Origins in the last month with a lot of positive comments. Like I said, it's a great addition to the story of 1 and 3, it's a technical marvel on the PSP, the combat is the best in the series to date, and the music and sound are all first rate. The theater (particularly how the stage is utilized) section is also the best use of a locale in any Silent Hill game. Ever.

The inclusion of achievements (called "Accolades" in SH0) is also a nice addition.

I really wonder what the fuck has happened to people's standards when they crap all over a game as good as Origins. What really floors me is that people don't even seem willing to admit that despite any misgivings they have about it, it's still one of the most visually impressive pieces on the PSP to date.

I suppose when an entire generation of gamers have been pussy-whipped into throwing their adoration at whatever title, developer, genre, or console media outlets tell them to this sort of climate is bound to be created.

Nightshift_Nurse

However, I must admit that the series did go downhill since Silent Hill 2... though each following game is still decent in its own rights.

@baked ham: Don't let people dissuade you from playing Silent Hill 4. It was an excellent game with a few negative quirks which would place it below the other 3 in terms of how good it was. That said, I thought it was much better than Silent Hill Origins. Silent Hill Origins felt like a game by people trying to copy the Silent Hill formula rather than a game by the same creators. The review by Yahtzee is quite apt, though I wouldn't be quite so harsh on it. It's worth playing if you enjoy the series and don't mind an inferior product. That said the game design really didn't feel up to snuff.

But back to SH4. Silent Hill 4 had a very interesting story, and I really liked how the game fleshed out. I'll tell you the issues right now though.

1) It requires you to buy one very strange thing. Minor spoiler involved (don't continue this point if you don't want to read it, but it's a pretty minor spoiler IMO). A character believes his mother is a room. Yep, weird belief but whatever.

2) It's lacking in "Silent Hillness" in that there's "no otherworld".

3) They introduce a limited inventory for weapons. I'll tell you now that ranged weapons are mostly useless since ammo takes an inventory slot. Plus IIRC there's weapon degradation.

4) They introduce unkillable foes. "Ghosts" in the game appear every now and then. They're pretty awesome because they have something to do with the story and they're pretty damn creepy. But they're annoying because they hurt you just by being near you and if you beat them up, they fall to the floor for a few seconds before getting back up. There IS a way to get rid of them permanently but you can't get rid of all of them permanently.

Other than that, I thought the game was very good. I'm kind of sad it's gotten so much hate because I really liked it (minus the issues I referenced above).

Basically, I think I have the total opposite opinion than Mavwick. :) I haven't gotten the bad ending though, and I don't know if I ever will. Busy playing better games. (Currently working my way through Mass Effect).

IMO the series' greatness goes in chronological order. I know a lot of people thought SH2 was the pinnacle and I'm hard pressed to disagree, but I'll give SH the nod just for being the first and for being the game that got me to love the series with a passion.

spork

@AnEternalEnigma: Two reasons it's a bad Silent Hill game:

1) The game doesn't get weird around you, you're thrown into the midst of it with 3 seconds of weak exposition at the beginning. The idea of starting out normal, becoming trapped in a cell in said normality (already creepy), and only then allowed a portal to someplace even worse...that would have been good.

2) The dark, mood setting violence (ie: hooker carving) felt forced.

Everything else, both big and small, is compounded by those two things.

Nightshift_Nurse

I agree with your defense, Enigma, but SH4 is just a rotten game. It's just poor game-making when you need an NPC to follow you and survive and said NPC is as sluggish, unresponsive and stupid as she was during the whole game. The plot unfolds in a clumsy manner and it's painful to get all the endings.
SH4 contains one of my favorite psychological tricks of the games. Having your safe haven in first-person view grants you a feeling of attachment you don't get in third person. It's your home in the game. When that safe haven is torn from you, it's a terrifying experience.
At least it should be. The game was just so shoddy, I can see how most gamers are annoyed by those events. It was the only thing in the whole game that got to me.

Moving on, SH:Origins is a brilliant but short piece of true Silent Hill gaming. All who enjoyed SH2 really deserve to play it through. The creators mentioned SH2's feel was what they wanted in this and it's all there. Great storyline that's wonderfully bent (the trucker personality is vital to his story), truly scary moments and a glut of smart metaphors sprinkled into the game make it a must for fans of real horror. The format of a portable horror game didn't work for me, so I set it down for a month or so before finishing it at one point. When it's on PS2, everyone should give it a try.

Ack, I wound up writing a review. If you think SH is dead, this may be the revival or a badass death knell. Fans will love it, but it's short. OH, and IMO the bad ending is the "real" ending, so two playthroughs might be worth it.

Mavwick

I never, ever will understand the bad rap Silent Hill 4 gets from so-called fans. I thought it was just as psychologically disorienting and disturbing, if not moreso, than the first game.

The only complaints I ever see lodged are "it was too different" or whatever and they are usually followed with very, VERY shaky explanations that have more holes than Swiss cheese.

Yeah, the main character's voice actor had the personality of a doorknob and the burping nurses were really stupid, but everything else I thoroughly enjoyed.

I loved the idea of your supposed safe haven gradually devolving into an extension of Hell. This leads me to debunking a complaint so many people make: the first-person view. What exactly was so wrong with that? You can't honestly tell me that watching the deterioration and dilapidation of your apartment through the eyes of the character would have been just as effective or memorable in a third-person view. Also, you barely even play 25% of the game in first person, so I don't see what the big gripe is. There is zero first-person combat.

I also enjoyed re-playing all the areas with Walter Sullivan stalking you with a gun while you're dragging sick ass Eileen around.

One of the best SH in-game visuals ever is when Henry and Eileen are on the catwalk of the water tower. The camera pulls way the fuck back and you see Walter stroll right around the corner, coming for your ass.

I can understand why it may not be a favorite game of the series (my favorite is 2), but I certainly don't understand why so many "fans" hate the game or claimed it turned them off to the series. If SH4 seriously made you never want to play any SH game ever again, odds are you weren't that big of a fan to begin with.

AnEternalEnigma

Meh. I'm of the opinion that Silent Hill: Origins is a fantastic game and definitely lives up to the standards set by the series. Every franchise has its peak installment, but saying the game is crap because it ain't better than part two is a touch unrealistic...or elitist. Take your pick.

On the PSP it's also a technical marvel.

Nightshift_Nurse

As a fan of the rest of the series I tried forcing myself to play Origins.. Honestly for all it's faults I had more fun with 4 then i've been having with Origins.

The sad part is that if they hadn't made a couple of retarded changes (breakable weapons, player not being able to run for more then 10 seconds, ability to jump between real and nightmare world at will) they could have skated by with a decent entry into the series.

weasl

SH3 was good, but my main problem was how fast the story fell apart 3/4ths of the way through, and the last boss fight was such a dry hump it wasnt funny.

I stopped playing the series at 2. I absolutely LOVED Silent Hill 2. The first was pretty good, but 2 was excellent. I always wanted to play 3 and 4 but never got around to it. There was always a Resident Evil or Fatal Frame game to play instead, I suppose. Did you try out Silent Hill Origins? If so... is it bad, too? Oh, and what sucked about 4? I know a few people that recommended it to me. Nevertheless, I believe I still have interested in 5, which'll be out... some time.

baked ham
