@Baberg
My provocative statement seems to have extended this thread a bit. I am always amazed at status quo's reaction to any concept that diverges from the "norm".

Here we go..in answer to your question....this article reports (in essence)that EA is moving to corner/monopolize yet another genre of athletics. We have already seen their handy work with Madden and the NFL. They squeezed out the competition (2k5 - which many argue is still superior to today's Madden game) and have rewarded their fans with games that have only seen marginal (at best) improvement. As it turns out, the competition with Sega's 2k may have better for their creative effort than the sole proprietorship they now enjoy. Regardless, we as the consumer lose the most in this battle because there are fewer voices hence fewer choices in football games.

I take issue with your equating industry success with sales numbers. Yes more games are being purchased, but that does not mean that the quality for the consumer is also increasing. Most games being developed in this current gen are little more than drivel. Big license, great eye candy, but often lacking in gameplay and length. We as consumers are paying more for less. Yes, corporations are cashing in but we won't see that returned to us in the form of improved game experiences. Many gamers are already noticing that our "quality" experiences are lessening even though we are spending more money than we ever have. It is totally natural for corporations to turn even greater profits by decreasing the money spent in investment/overhead (skilled developers/innovative ideas).

The decline in overall quality may be a large factor for this recent surge in retro gaming. Many gamers pine for older games and while much of that may be nostalgia, a good amount might be attributable to the feeling of emptiness after playing this gen's latest offerings. Of the 15 games I purchased in 07, there are only three I hold up to the standard of game experience I enjoyed in past generations….and I know I am not alone in this sentiment.

Baberg, please remember that others are just as entitled to their opinions as you are and spouting knee jerk reactions to the concepts of others is not what discourse is about. I understand your opinion, I just do see the matter the way you do. I actually hope I am wrong, but my understanding of corporate practice leads me to believe otherwise.

GameraTheGreat

I can't imagine college hoops being a big seller and wouldn't blame 2k for not wasting any more money on a liscense that doesn't make much money. Invest it some where else. The liscense costs for these sports games seem to be taking up more of the developement cost and in the last 2 years sports games have been excessively stale. All the liscenses in the world can't help you EA if your products continue to lack change and innovation.

gogators88

Both NASCAR and NFL exclusivity deals are up in 2009. Best to contact the sanctioning body's and leagues if you don't like the current situation.

Honest opinion is the exclusive relationship with NASCAR will continue because of the planed relocation of the franchise to Mooresville, NC. Plus thats the way NASCAR rolls.

NFL will be renewed but exclusively.... maybe not? The Madden franchise is an EA Sports cash cow and fan facvorite yopu you know thats not going away any time soon.

dvdman98

when you think about it, i'm happy we have forums where fanboys can spew out retarded hatred on the different sections of the gaming industry instead of running rampant on other issues of society and get put to shame. Sensationalizing games over life issues, i'll take any day. Let it be someone's-the fanboys- outlet. We, the "true" gamer nation that experiences the industries efforts and work, should stop commenting on their comments. They can take it as retaliation on our part instead of the union of multi-plat gaming message that the "true" gamer nation tries to convey. In essence, mostly without thought nor intention, not only fuel but severely fan their fires in some cases. In the story about the cancellation of CH 2K9, i was careful enough to comment on an idea of a fellow Kotakuite said 2K should do, instead of putting EA's current/-seemingly so to others-practices. If you feel as if 2K makes the better entertainment sports franchises, use your consumer power, buy.

InEffectMode

@baberg: I'd agree with most of that, though there's a little iffyness in the too short, too long part. There's no reason to artificially stretch a game out when it hurts the enjoyment of a title, but I don't see why anyone should have to pay 50+ dollars for a title that will only last you one or two nights of playing and has no replay value.

Otherwise, definitely agree.

Ampillion, Dayman. Fighter of the Nightman.

@Moonshadow101: Demanding advancement kills things?

I'd say demanding unwarranted advancement kills things. The kind of gamer who screams on the Internet "If your game doesn't have 4.8 gigapixel texture maps, it's not worth playing!" could falsely lead developers to think that graphics innovation alone is enough to sell their game. Similarly those who dismiss games for being "too short" or "too long" or "no multiplayer, no thanks" could also make developers hesitant to take risks with more unique games while sending mixed messages. Not every gamer needs an 90-hour grindfest RPG, just like not every gamer cares about multiplayer.

So in a way, demanding advancement can kill things, if the advancement is falsely hyped. Because come on, everybody knows that 4.5 gigapixel texture maps is plenty.

baberg

I'll go further to say that if anything kills video gaming, it'll be the *gamers*.

The corporate nod for the gaming industry has been a double-edged sword...unfortunately, this sword is too often used to lop the heads off of gamers at the shoulders. It's time for an article titled: Is Big Business Killing Video Games? But that article won't be written until gaming is truly dead....s'okay cuz I'll still be playing since I enjoyed myself more when no one (at least no one who sat on an executive board of investors) cared.

GameraTheGreat

@baberg: Couldn't agree more with you. We've seen a lot of good franchises die over the years because of EA's exclusive licenses. NFL Blitz is just one of many that just wasn't the same game sans the NFL license. It wasn't an instant classic in any regard, but it certainly was a fun simple game.

If this is any indication of what is to come, than yes, expect more saturation and homogeneous gaming to be produced from EA Sports. I hope other licenses remain free from exclusivity, because in the end, the consumer will benefit from the work of many, rather than one studio.

mr_dimsum

I doubt that EA/CLC forced a sole license on 2K. It's more likely that CLC is demanding far more than 2K was willing to pay. Since EA is "in the middle of a long-term license with the CLC" that might mean they paid a boatload of cash up-front to the CLC a few years ago, and the CLC was looking for the same money from 2K but since they're known for keeping prices cheap, they couldn't or wouldn't pony up the cash for the license.

Monopolies are a dangerous thing. I certainly hope that the sports video game world isn't heading to a "sole source" style of gaming. It's bad for the consumer.

baberg

EA is monopolizing the licensed sports gaming market. Luckily, the NBA is still free from its shackles. I don't know what this will do to the market, but if there is any indication EA has shown us over the years since all these exclusivity contracts, it's that quality is compromised once competition is nullified.

Another sad day for gaming..

mr_dimsum
