All you do here is whine because a good developer made a great looking and fun game, talk about the PS3 being powerfull, A WHOLE PARAGRAPH OF IT! lol So keep on whining about it, it still does not make any sense at all. I guess a developer who makes a good game need to keep their mouths shut in your view, I guess you make sure to say the same about every game and developer to every platform right?!

And no he didn't kiss Sony ass, nor do I, and clearly not you. But what he did was making stuff about about things he doesn't know drawing conclusions based on a number he can't understand and claim that the best looking games right now is on the 360, not to mention that COD4 is the best title in all genres. And a lot more, you? Well you just keep whining about a good developer saying something good about their hardware :/

You also have a habit of resorting to personal insults, anyway I'm done here, I even regret making a reply to you I know no one shall read anyway.

Irenicus-the one and only

i thought uncharted was pretty awesome, but to be honest, its too hard for me! im terrible at shooting games where you have to aim yourself. LOL!

i hope theres a new jak and daxter some time soon.. i much prefer a double jump, spin attack, and auto-aim weapons..

puzzles and lots of platforming ftw... i had been hoping uncharted was going to be MOSTLY puzzles and platforming.. so i was a little dissappointed about the huge emphasis on the gun battles.

joelface

@RuneX: shame you didnt stick past the demo; many folks seem to have lost interest there, and i assure you, its far, far better.

@dirkxxdiggler: hah! shit, forgot about that. never even played 3DO to be fair.

@Darth_Tigris: same for you as the first guy; really, the demo kinda sells it as a straight 3rd person shoooter, and its a lot more than that.

@maniacmayhem: that's the thing; this game was both beautiful, and a lot of fun to play. dont let anyone convince you you cant have both.

@goldwings: hit me up, then!

@Soldrak: ah, i see your point. Mass Effect has some quite varied locations, but i do feel Uncharted took me through everything from caverns, to jungles, to bits of south america, to uh, silent hill? if were talking textures here, ill still disagree, but as i also prefer RPGs, if youre talking environment, then yeah, there's parts of Mass Effect that certainly seem more alive, but youve gotta figure part of that is NPCs, dialouge between characters and such.
I certainly cant argue preference with you, theyre both fine games, and personally im greatful as a gamer to be going right from one to the other.

TheIrishNinja

"Lair failed, Uncharted delivered so what is your point?"

Read this AGAIN so we can spare ourselves the grief of undeveloped reading comprehension:

"What ND should be praised for is the fact that they managed to create a more than decent game *despite* having to put so much effort into the graphics engine and technology."

"There are too many examples of developers spending way too much time on 'learning technology' and not enough time actually making a game."

If you still don't see my point, then it's hopeless and I think I'm just going to have to avoid having discussions with you in the future unless you say something that demands a strong, terse response because I find that it's a complete waste of time trying to have a discussion with someone who can't comprehend simple statements and just resorts to blind, childish fanboism.

@Irenicus-the one and only: My point is very obvious to anyone who knows how to read at a more than high school level. My point is that developers can spend entirely too much time on the graphics engine and technology that they forget that they're supposed to make a fun and playable game. ND should be praised for making a more than decent game despite spending a lot of time on the technology end, they could have easily ended up with a Lair but ended up with something somewhat decent.

I don't know how to make that any clearer to you, why don't you re-read what I actually wrote. Or maybe you wanted me to spew fanboi juice and call Uncharted the best game ever made?
Wha-wha-what? What are you spewing brotha? The specs I posted are facts just take a look at the official sony and microsoft websites so you can see the specs on both systems and they will officially match with mine.

I have played Uncharted, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Motorstorm, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank and the best game out of all them has been Call of Duty 4 and its multiplatform and many gamers will probably testify to this as well. By saying this I am not doubting Sony's exclusive's beauty in their games but they do not greatly surpass Microsoft's exclusives.

Everyone is talking about the PS3's potential, it has been Sony's number one marketing bullet point since day one because they released their console late so they had to devise a marketing strategy that would cement in the minds of many sheeple that the PS3 has untapped graphical potential in it. You have fallen for it and that is cool and all, but any developer will tell you that both machines have a certain degree of untapped potential. Case in point God of War II for the PS2. It's not just the PS3 that has a monopoly over the "untapped potential" moniker.

Leobebes

If you can't see that then you are blind, sorry.

As to all the tech stuff you write, I can't bother to answer that, I know very little of this in great detail first hand with the experience required to understand it, and that saying goes for you too.

As for the movies in Uncharted, they never felt like movies to me, I didn't loose any immersion, and they did not look like CG compared to the rest of the game. They don't feel like cheating to me, but I guess I don't know shit about gaming playing since I was 4 years old making it 20years now playing games. Just like I did not loose it in Final Fantasy 7 or any other title. I also like to note that uncharted had better animations then most games

Next time, why not make a post after actually playing the game, and if you are going to post about tech/facts make sure you know what you are talking about. Instead of quoting something you heard on System wars.

PS: U3 Engine just got proper support for the PS3, which devs whined about (silicon knights?,) and UT3 looks better then Gears of War, just an example.

Irenicus-the one and only

It's dual-access, which means it can store the same amount of memory, in total, but it can access twice as much at any given time. The only reason people see it as a disadvantage is because so far a lot of the games that have come out on both PS3 and 360 were made on 360 first, with a single 512 memory pipeline in mind, so when they ported it, they did a half-assed job of splitting the memory pipeline and it ends up running worse on the PS3. Any game designed from the ground up for the PS3 has the potential to FAR surpass what the 360 can do, given that the developers know what they're doing.

baked ham

I am not denying Uncharted's beauty by any means. It's as beautiful a game as any game on any console right now, but I don't realistically see how the PS3 could ever drastically surpass the 360 in graphical capability in its lifetime. Due to its hardware limitations with the 256/256 split memory which is the same amount of memory except not unified like the 360, I heard the graphics card is about the same, and the GPU a little weaker but can be compensated by the numerous SPE's. It just doesn't have a whole lot more than the 360 under the hood to really create overwhelmingly superior graphics. Blue Ray does give it an advantage in the whole "lets fit more textures and a huge ass game on one disc" department but it still won't help out in creating more realistic physics. Also Uncharted used the same trickery as previous Playstation consoles used and relied heavily on cut scenes that were not use the in game engine, this to anyone who knows about gaming is a cheat, if you take a look at the Unreal engine all the cutscenes use the in game engine to process, so the player doesn't lose a sense of immersion when transition from narrative to gameplay. Uncharted cut scenes are CG video reels which give a player a snippet of feeling that what they are watching is a superior graphical output but instead they are watching a pre recorded video experience.

Leobebes

It appears that way if you play on a very small, low resolution television. But that's his only excuse, really.

Naughty Dog and Insomniac are both amazing developers and while neither is owned by Sony, Insomniac focus all their attention on Sony consoles, with Sony devs working very closely (possibly in house) with them I believe. Insomniac are also share what they know with other PlayStation devs through their website.

Naughty Dog aren't Sony owned but spend much time creating for the platform. I believe I read somewhere they had plans for a 360 game but then again, I might have been dreaming, or really really tired.

StolenName

@TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL): I'll admit I actually prefer RPG's to shooters so I may be a bit biased. I will say though that Uncharted was a little bit on the short side and didn't have much in the way of replayability.

From a purely technical standpoint, Uncharted has the edge with its fluid animation and solid framerate. But from an art direction and locational diversity standpoint, I think Mass Effect has the edge, they made a galaxy come to life and had a wide variety of unique locations. Uncharted had very few locations, I really enjoyed the ruins and the church/library at the end but only because they broke the monotony of jungle levels throughout the game.

My point in that post was to say that technical superiority won't necessarily lead to games looking better for most people. As I mentioned, Call of Duty 4 runs at 600p and God of War II is last-gen but these two games were some of the most graphically stunning games last year.

I would much rather have Naughty Dog spend more time creating a more diverse range of graphical assets for their next game rather than waste time making their graphics engine more technically advanced, as the latter strategy would only provide diminishing returns.

Soldrak

@RuneX: what the hell are you talking about?

@Irenicus-the one and only: dude, you have to remember that consoles always get better over time. always. There has never been an exception to that rule. It will be true for Wii it will be true for PS3. Look at Tourist Trophy on PS2. That game looks like a straight up 360 effort just as an example. So I have no doubt in my mind that PS3 games haven't even begun to truly show what the console can do.

I don't understand why people can't understand that. 64 was a bitch to program for and we still got Perfect Dark and Goldeneye. We even got a RE2 with all of the CG on a cart. I spoke with a member of the Angel Studios team after he wrote an article for Gamasutra on the RE2 for 64 and he said that the 64 version would have looked and sounded as good as the ps version if it wasn't for 1MB of data that had to go in after the fact that caused them to compressed the cutscenes even moreso. The point is...even the hardest hardware to code have yielded incredible results with skilled programmers. PS3 is different all of a sudden? Please...can we not be clueless in this regard?

Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.

Untapped power, huh? With AAA games costing around 30-40 million dollars to create for the thing, your game is going to have to be better in sales than Uncharted. It's only sold 800,000 copies worldwide so far. That isn't nearly enough to make a profit.

Do it.

After playing through Ratchet, it'd be intriguing to see what they could do with J&D. But yeah, I'd love a sci-fi epic so much more.

@Strangelove: Yeah, I'm also sick of it. But it's just part of the marketing. And if any anybody can claim it, it's these guys and Insomniac.

I read somewhere that Uncharted was only using 10% of the SPU capacity (according to the profiling software). I'm not really sure how much more they can get out of it, but even 50% would be staggering. That's a 35x improvement across 7 SPUs. They obviously wouldn't get that whole increase (the general purpose CPU and GPU will become a bottle neck), but 1080p/60FPS with higher resolution textures should easily be doable.

Doshu

I am so tired of all this needless posturing from developers. If the PS3 can do more then the X360, that is great. Rather then talking about it (which has been going on since the console was first released and was not meeting expectations) show all of us in the games you create. The 360 has a large list of games that run and look better on it, then the PS3. If the PS3 can do more, do it, but boasting about something that has never came to fruition is rather ridiculous. Comments like these come out daily for the PS3, I would expect the editors at Kotaku have better taste then to post this nonsense.

Muisee

Honestly these kinds of statements would be a tad more believable if made by an independent third-party publisher rather than a first-party studio who for all we know is simply parroting what Sony tells it to.

He's also hyping up the graphics in Uncharted a little bit too much, honestly it's nice but it's at the same quality as the graphics in games like Mass Effect. Call of Duty 4, a multiplatform game, looks better than Uncharted.

PS3 may well have a lot more power under its hood, question is should we believe this guy's word? I'll reserve judgement until I've seen Final Fantasy 13 and Metal Gear Solid 4 do what they've promised it would do 'only on the PS3'.

Soldrak

They did make their game. And by the looks of it they succeeded. It is better than spouting nonsense in online blog forums and have nothing to show for.

JonC

Uncharted was awesome. And I liked the unlockable goodies and slow-mo modes.
I'll be keeping my eyes open, but I hope they stay away from cartoonish, Jak and Daxter-like characters. You've spoiled me on Uncharted. Now do a sci-fi epic.

Do it.

Insomnia Bob
