Picked one up at a garage sale about 5 years ago... and then promptly went on ebay to buy the Wario game. lol. I didn't get a chance to play much because the things just chugs battery power and they released the adapter as a seperate add-on (which I can't buy anywhere nowadays). Everything said about the virtual boy on here is true... the good and the bad. It was a good experiment... I just can't beleive people paid that much for it!

Schnazer

I have two Virtual Boys, all of the US games, and a few of the Japanese ones (no region locking). It was a great system, but it was a bit uncomfortable to use. I preferred to have it resting on top of me while I laid on the sofa, but I have played it other ways. Most people never gave it a chance, but it really was a great system with a ton of potential.

kingofallcosmos

The virtual boy made one huge mistake: it tried to be a portable system, but it was far too bulky to be on. The thing is huge. Like XBOX huge. The graphics were in a jarring shade of red on black. It had little better than gameboy graphics, and that hurt the 3d.

Sadly, you could probabaly do it half well these days. Think a DS like screen setup rigged into goggles like those olympus TV glasses they used to have, with headphone based prologic. Toss in wireless controllers, and it woudl be kinda neat. You won't have to have a huge resolution, as the screens are going to be pretty small, but you'd want to push 'smooth' graphics as to not hurt someone's eyes too badly.

What killed the VB was they tried to do home VR with gameboy level tech, when really you need at least 64 level tech. Sure, they did it in the early 90's with earlier graphics, but the effects were nothing more than a novelty.

mrantimatter

Oh my gosh! I really did love this system. My mom picked one up for me at a garage sale when I was 10 (I think? If this was '94...), for $30 or so. I didn't get headaches from it and the games were surprisingly fun/challenging. The 3D effect was also one of the coolest things I'd ever seen up until that point - well worth losing out on color.

Personally, I would *love* to see what Nintendo could do with a Virtua Boy 2, but then again I'm one of those people who never wanted the VR craze to die with the mid 90's.

Blinded220

Virtual Boy was awesome, still have a half broken system sitting in my corner. I was lucky enough to catch one on a ToysRUs clearance sale for about $40. Best $40 I ever spend, what a ride. Red Alert was such an awesome shooter, I wish they had made Tempest for it. I also had a lot of fun with the Wario game. Also, I will go on record to say that the Virtual Boy controller was the most well designed, most comfortable game controller of all time. People just didn't give it a chance.

Also, if anyone it interested, please look at the Virtual Boy wiki. It will explain the seemingly random reasons Nintendo made like going with the red color for the unit. It also explains how they couldn't make it head-mounted. Basically the unit works on a linear array of LEDs, not LCDs like you would expect. Each screen has an LED that will reflect off of an array of oscilating mirrors that give the illusion of a low-resolution screen. For this reason, the unit could not be portable (aka head-mounted) because the rapid movement would muck up the displays. Yeah they could probabally make it full color these days, but this is 1995 we are talking about and we all know how well $600 systems sell.

Like everything else, people just love to jump on the hate-train without giving the system a chance. Nintendo was just ahead of its time and the market wasn't ready. Its unfortunate because every time a new innovative product comes out, people cry Virtual Boy 2, and probably never even played the thing in the first place.

@Kulor: I think that has a lot to do with it. The system itself isn't the most comfortable device ever. Prior to it, you had television based consoles, which would let you lounge on anything within cable's reach of your console... or portable systems that you could lounge on anything so long as you could see the screen. This thing required you to pretty much sit and stick your face into this little screening mask. Add to it the fact that some people experienced headaches, eye irritation or discomfort from staring into these things, and it kinda felt like a minor step up from the Gameboy. Even though it did have a 3D element to it, those that felt that discomfort ultimately booed it. I think if you got it for a clearance price, you got a steal, it's still worth playing... and even if you don't play it, it does look kinda funky for a nice desk decorator.

Ampillion = That Man.

I liked the tennis game and Rad Alarm.

I think it was a failure because it was also a console not made for the public at that time. It´s like releasing a developer tool, or something like that. The idea of VR googles doesn´t works for gaming because of stuff like that. Being nto confortable, hard to learn, giving headaches.. such stuff are nuisances that only people who work on it can handle, like having your eyes sore and your hands achig for working so long. Even this "I can´t see the controls so it´s hard" is a kind of talk like "you must master the shortcuts" kind of logic. Now we have consoles with the "easy to learn hard to master" trand again, thanks god.

Wyld

This was actually one of the later commercials, early ones were stupid, they'd say "it's so powerful we can't show it to you", which combined with a lack of screenshots on boxes and the only demo in most stores being the single-color line graphics game, made people think the system was only capable of single-color line-grahics. Which is one of the reasons the system failed. Its graphics were actually quite good at the time, particularly for a portable system. It only had one more color than the Gameboy, but it made great use of that, and the higher resolution, larger sprites, etc.

@Doomstalk:
The bits weren't referring to the size of the memory registers, but the size of the data the CPU could process at one time. And in terms of that, going from 16-bits to 32-bits is a HUGE jump in CPU power, because it means you can have up to 65,536 different commands and have them deal with numbers up to 65,535 in one single clock cycle. After 32-bit the jump is far less of an improvement, because who needs more than 65,536 programming commands? Just means you can process larger numbers in a shorter time (and larger numbers aren't needed for much more than memory addresses).

Dreamwriter

I used to love mine, even though the only games I was good at was Pinball and the Wario. I had Tennis and... Mario Clash? Clash was fun, but I could never beat that damn thing. Guess I had the boxing game too, if I recall...

The thing never really gave me any headaches or whatever, but it was good at making my eyes feel dry. That and the fact I beat half the games I had, and the other half were a sports game, a pinball game, and damn Clash, I did pretty good with the thing. Sadly, I think it was stolen from me at some point, or lost on a trip, as I have never seen the thing since.

Fun games, on an unwieldy system that ate up batteries if I remember right. At least they moved on to the GBA and DS afterwards instead of trying again...

Ampillion = That Man.
