@Hitokage: I don't goto Gamespot anymore either. I don't like their reviews at all. The only thing I like is the GOTY awards and I think Navarro took the piss out of Jaws: Unleashed when everyone bought the game instead of Psychonauts.

I watched the Big Rigs video review. LMAO!! That is a poor game and who the hell made it!? The Physics on that game are poor!!!

I've been a longtime Gamespot member (polsci1503) and the exodus of GS staff has been disconcerting to say the least. I stuck around after Jeff was fired mainly to keep my friends intact. A number of posters have said it already, but the Gamespot community is pretty cool and I have friends all over the world.

That said, I hope Cnet and GS management get their act together. They may not even care with the buyout rumors swirling, but the member base is thinning. I've seen plenty of members go and the site got quiet after Jeff's firing (I did see BadAssCat's link to site traffic which showed traffic was still high, but the members sure weren't saying much). They can fix this, but somehow I doubt these suits can see past their commission checks.

Over the last 18 months Gamespot has lost the following high profile editorial staff:

Carrie Gouskos
Greg Kasavin
Greg Mueller
Rich Gallup
Tim Tracy
Jeff Gerstmann
Frank Provo
Alex Navarro

Very few of the people who made the site a geat place to visit over the previous 5 years are there anymore. Features have dried up and I don't trust the reviews after the Gerstmann debacle. The US office has only taken on *one* new person to make up for these losses (to my knowledge). It's really sad to see a site with the history of Gamespot killed by Corporate greed.

Still, it's a decent place to leech bandwith once in a blue moon for a large game related download... not quite what Cnet had in mind for the site though I suspect.

If gamespot had fired the man for a solid reason they would have said so. People only say no comment when they have something to hide. If they were trying to 'protect' anybody said person probably would have come forward and admitted it. They haven't so I call BS.

I haven't visited the site since and I do not intend to. Commercialisation of our hobby will happen, but I will be damned if I have a hand in it.

Website traffic is not the only indicator of a site's health. If they lose too much of the enthusiast crowd, they will still be able to float on the virtue of their search ranking, however, it could just be the beginning of the end. Also, I don't see any stats on how many paid GameSpot accounts this cost them.

It's people like those in management at GameSpot that decided Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel was a good business venture.

He was the only reason I keep GS on my bookmarks anymore. I really do enjoy his style of reviewing (more just everyman remarks then tech jargin) and really will admit to going back to GS after running across his review of big rigs (which I really want to play for some insane ides) Its sad to see such a great person go but at the same time he's obviously got a better oppertunity somewhereelse. (scuse the spelling errors, working 13 hours does it to ya) My only hope is that I will see him somewhere good and reliable (hint hint Kotaku) but whatever happens, I will always remember Big Rigs.

Will Gamespot die out? Who knows and who cares? We've seen sites come and go for years: some good (Next Generation, some okay (GameFan), and some that couldn't have died any sooner (Daily Radar). If Gamespot were to vanish another site would take its place.

I mean letting Jeff go, that was not a very good decision especially since he was made more or less editor-in-chief after Greg Kassavin left, and he was great for the job as well. Really, I hope both of the Ryans leave Davis and McDonald... And I know Brad is not as high up, but if Brad left as well, the site would be left in shambles.

I was at a point where if Kasavin recommended a game I would buy it simply on his word. I trusted his perspective that much. I wasn't a huge Gerstmann supporter as far as his reviews went, he was too smarmy and glib for his own good but he put a face to the site and his reports were decent. Navarro's review were ok, not the best but like Gerstmann he gave personality to an otherwise stiff corporate operation that I wouldn't have gone to otherwise.

The only guy left I like is Tor Thorsen (who is genuinely hilarious) and I doubt he'll be around for very long as he seemed to be tight with the core crew there.

Navarro will be missed. his video reviews were always straight to the point and entertaining (as is evident in the Big Rigs review). What is going on with gamespot?!?! I remember 10 years ago when I opened up my Tips & Tricks magazine and saw the ad for videogames.com, back before Kane & Lynch showed up and messed everything up. And now Gerstmann and Navarro are gone, the only reviewers on the site that expressed emotions during a video review.

Alex Nevarro was my favorite Gamespot editor, and not just for the Big Rigs thing.

In his Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast review, he said something like "Games about rocket-powered monkeys should be awesome. Why is this game not awesome?" Also, he gave Super Mario Galaxy a 9.5, which (while I don't want to sound biased) shows that he's not as harsh on Nintendo games as some of the other staffers are (Fire Emblem, anyone?)

I haven't been back to Gamespot since I watched that "tribute" video the staff was forced to do for Gerstmann. You could tell none of them wanted to be there and they couldn't even talk without getting choked up.

Any doubts I had about what went down there were erased when I watched that. Gerstmann was screwed over and they all knew it. I'm sure a lot of them aren't in a position to leave but I just don't see how anyone can take Gamespot seriously after all this. I'm sure Navarro won't be the last to leave and anyone who would take a job at Gamespot to replace those who left deserves to be slapped.

C|Net needs to admit that they were wrong and get rid of whoever was responsible for Gerstmann being fired in the first place if they ever hope to be taken seriously again. Gamespot can't move forward so long as this C|Net policy of caving to advertiser pressure exists.

I feel bad for being so late, but I just saw the Big Rigs review. So hilarious. I don't vist GS so I can't say this impacts me.

The thing you people should realize is. GS isn't the only site that's been "bought out" like this. Any other site that you go to such as 1up, or IGN is going to be the same thing. Hell, even Gawker/Kotaku has corporate sponsors. We trust Kotaku editors more, but can we safely say they were never given the suggestion to push one game more than others due to the revenue such games were providing?

The only reason GS is getting all the backlash, is because the story was publicized.

About a half hour ago, the Wikipedia article for the PS3 Ratchet & Clank game, in the Reception" section, mentioned the universal appraise the game received, except from GameSpot, where it was claimed that Microsoft bought a stake in the company, and the reviews have reflected a negative connotation towards Sony games because of this. It mentined that a credibility drop in GameSpot has resulted in Ratchet & Clank being given a 7.5 / 10 which is a disproportionate rating considering the 9s and 10s it received everywhere else.

And I just went to go read that section again, and all of it is gone except the bare fact that GameSpot gave it a 7.5, all the credibility & Microsoft stuff is gone.

So, I have a question: is there any truth to that statement, that Microsoft bought stake in GameSpot? I thought GameSpot was a CNet company... I dunno

Awsome. I've always hated Gamestop, and I'm so glad that it's reviewers are ditching it. God willing, Gamestop will go down, but that's not going to happen. I mean, it had the worst page design and was always dead last to get news and reviews up. There were times when IGN and 1up had a review of a game up 2 weeks before Gamespot. Even smaller game sites like Gamernode had news faster. Not to mention it had the most controversial reviews, even if I agreed with a lot of them.

As far as I'm concerned, any person that writes a review pretending to be objective isn't important to the gaming industry one bit.

Impressions, impressions, that is what I care for. They are subjective and I appreciate them for not "rating" a game in an objective fashion. Unlike reviews. They are never objective. Nothing is.
