The fact of the matter is, UMDs are quite inferior to micro drives. They have much less capacity and probably costs more, use more power, and are more expensive than say, a 40GB micro-drive. In just about EVERY quality, compared to a micro drive, it is inferior.

One of the chief selling points of an Intel Mac is that it can dual-boot. People who complain about PC-only content are manifesting two of the chief stereotypes held against Mac users for decades: Too clueless to do research and/or too lazy to implement a mildly technical solution -- even when running a setup assistant.

Do the work. Don't live up to someone else's stereotype. Unless it's prehistoric, your Mac's more flexible than you think.

I'm also loving the PS1 classics just downloaded Populous: The Beginning last night so I'm all for this new focus on downloadable content... I'm going to need to replace that 1GB memory stick soon though :(

I too own only 4 PSP games. GTA:VCS, Ridge Racer, and Midnight Club 3 and Megaman: Powered up. All these games were only $19.99 - the reason I picked them up. Although I admit, the PSP's Greatest Hits collection is getting better. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror is there, Daxter, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

Why isn't LocoRoco on it yet? It's more than enough to garnish GH fame.

Why do i not say completely digital and consider 8gb of flash or a 30-80gb micro hd? Simple. Consumers want to be able to go anywhere in the world and buy and play games. Simple and fast. Needing a computer just to get content they want then and their is not accessible.

Just for the record my OS is clean (came wit teh puter). :-) As for the rest I do OWN a lot more games and DVDs (inc HD DVD and BR) than I have ripped because I enjoy the high quality. I was more tring to make the point (badly I admit) that no one BUYS PSP games in general. That is why all of the new attention from Sony is being focused toward connectivity with the PS3 and funtionallity with Skype. For example, on PSP I own the GTA, FF, Star Wars BF and that is it. I do look forward to BUYING God of War when it comes out, but the point is... how many games are out there for the PSP that are WORTH buying? 7 or 8... maybe??

While I like the idea of having 80GB inside the PSP, it's not going to happen any time soon. The impact on battery life would be horrendous for a start. Plus you lose the durability of having almost no moving parts (except for the UMD drive) and move backwards in form factor.

@yashichi8bit: Ok, so with your knowledge in software & hardware you are telling me that you dont think the PSP is capable of running Skype?

I think they'd be stupid to limit Skype to the PSP2000 if they can run it on the PSP1000. If the memory footprint is too large, then they should hassle the Skype developers to fix it. Whether or not the RAM is the issue, I don't really know. But I doubt the limitation is for "marketing" reasons (ala Vista/DX10).

I don't own a PSP, but if I had a PSP1000 I'd probably e-bay it or whine loudly until they fix Skype to run on it (or give a more complete explanation on why it won't). But to get any results, the whine needs to be along the lines of: "I WANT IT". Whining about them trying to make you upgrade PSPs (which is your assertion) won't get you the results you want and will likely result in a response of STFU.

I have a 60 gb ipod and a 30 gb zune. I think the PSP, storage difference aside, is a way more powerful little device, and I think 170 bucks is a bargain. So i'd rather not pay the premium for a HD inclusion at this point, and i don't think it would be a competitive move price or feature wise. Its price/features based on the market leader (Nintendo) are pretty darn good where they are at.

I think with the announcement of the 16gb MSPD card, and the inevitable price drop of the 8gb to below 100 bucks, this will be enough storage and a good price point for those wanting needing more storage.
I recall a 3rd party 4gb hd, that was fairly expensive and obviously less desirable than the now 40 dollar 4gb MSPD.

It's a great and new world of morality my friend, where stealing is an afterthought and doing the right thing actually feels reasonable. Can you believe it?! Sure you can't being on a pirated OS, and not paying a dime for any Music,DVD, games, programs you have on your computer and other electronics.

I think software sales are pretty bummed out right now because of it being so get the game and stuff. BUt yes i agree with you though, i want to be able to support the people who worked on the things i'm able to play with and on.

I look at a high capacity HD, the same way I do for the PS3. A place for tons of movie and music content, and for as much demos as you want on the player.

I'm an editor at DAPreview.net, so I deal with PMP's for a living and the PSP would be my perfect PMP if it had an HD inside. That and full Xvid/Divx support.

What would be needed would be a buffer of about 1GB of NAND so that we can load large chunks of data to reduce the time that the hard drive has to stay on. Theat would reduce the drain on battery. I think that if they do what I suggested above, they can increase the running time to over 10 hours!

I understand the constraints of having high level software run on top of the default OS with little memory available (i have been a programmer myself for 10+ years also. I even have some significant assembly experience too). I can see how this route may make other functions of the PSP inoperable. But I haven't seen anything yet about this new skype for the PSP that says you CAN do other things at the same time while on a call.

Basically I am saying i believe its possible and that its too early in the game to say its not. And for the time being is a selling point for Sony and the new PSP.

Excuse me ignorance :/. Thanks though. And opps i was thinking about the memory stick. Duh! Yeah i don't know my formats or drives. I'm waiting out to buy a psp (since i'm poor as well) but a hard drive would be nice. Just worried about the extra dough for it but you get what you pay for.

Even with that included that price is not going attract people. It's at 160 without a hard drive. With the included 80gb of memory it will come out to 200-300. I did have my reading glasses on as well *pft* but it seems i need new ones :'(

He said a HD, not flash. An 80GB HD would be pretty sweet. It might increase the size of the PSP a bit, and the cost, but I'd buy one. The only major downside is the stability of HD's compared to flash. The latter having no moving parts.

Just look at this way, the iPod Classic has an 80GB HD inside. Look how thin that player is. With some engineering, they might be able to keep the size the same. battery life would also be improved

Funny thing is that the whole memory thing does ring with me, and I happen to be a firmware developer with almost 10 years under my belt in the field.

Skype may just be a bloated protocol to begin with, and I doubt they would rework the whole protocol just so that the PSP could work with it. Maybe some time in the future, if Skype (not Sony) decides to slim down the protocol, they will make a PSP 1000 version.

In the mean time enjoy what you can currently do with your PSP.

Have you taken a look at what the homebrew scene has accomplished with the old Main Memory: 32MB & Embedded DRAM: 4MB.

I think if you can get windows 98 running inside x86 emulation on an old PSP that A skype lite version shouldn't be too far off from being possible. Besides its is basically just a set of protocols to relay the VOIP data.
