On the one hand, ARGH NOT AGAIN PLEASE GOD WE'RE SO CLOSE.

On the other hand, this seems to only concern the North American release. Why would the game be delayed if it's already coming out in Japan this month? Would that mean that the Japanese are getting less features or an unpolished game?

That could be the case, which would be bad for Japanese gamers. But it would at least mean they're trying to get it right.

But if the versions are going to be the same other than the languages, then why on Earth would they do it? More time for marketing? IT DOESN'T NEED MARKETING, GRA...

Comparatively speaking? Melee moves ARE easy. In Smash, nearly everything is one or two button presses and one or two directional inputs, with generous frame leeway. But in, say, GGXX, you literally need to spend hours at a time with a single character (lolz Slayer) just to string a standard combo, because his moves don't gatling. You can go online and read a guide on SWF that will tell you how to do all the tricks related to a given character, and master them in a month. Doesn't mean you know when to use them, but it won't take very long at all just to get a feel for how a character moves and plays. The tech stuff is just easier. A single example: the frame slot alloted for teching in Smash is 20 frames. To perform an FRC in GGXX, you have about 5 frames.
I repeat, go to SRK or SWF or Dustloop and ask- anyone will tell you Smash is an easy game to learn.

@foxuser17: Now while I don't agree that smash is an easy game to master nor that the competitive community is a joke. I mean you don't really hear stories of east coast vs west coast $5000 money matches or fights breaking out over games of melee when compared to oh say Marvel vs Capcom 2. In fact I'd say the melee community of one of the more mature groups out of the lot.

However, by the looks of Ryan's avatar, whichs features the girl-boy Bridgett I'd have to say that he's a fan of the Guilty Gear series. Which certainly is a pretty tough game to master. Probbably moreso than smash. You listed a bunch of 'advanced' ssbm tricks so I could list GG stuff like:

Gold burst, roman cancel, false roman cancel, respect, gatlings, faultless defense, slash backs and force breaks. all of which requires a bit of skill to learn and execute properly.

Seriously though I can't take you seriously if you're going to blatantly lie on a gaming blog where 90% of the people will know you're full of shit. Just stop embarrassing yourself. If you think Smash Brothers isn't competitive you obviously suck at it; or are a prodigy at the game. And since I know the latter isn't the case, then it's definitely the former.

what do you mean? exploits like using the items, shield, wave-dash, and special moves to their max capacities? elitism like not everyone can be as good as the best players? yes then I guess you're right, for having so many different aspects in the fight and the top players having skill beyond regular gamers makes it not a real fighter. /sarcasm

I don't have a problem with other fighters, they're all quite good and unique in their own ways, but if you're going to say that Smash Bros. is less than them it just means you're uncomfortable playing something that doesn't have the standard fighting game set-up that was created by Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. It's a shame, I guess not everyone's up for innovation.

when you can perform the wave-dash while only playing it as a casual game then you can say it's not real fighter. Until then I guess you're just trying to belittle a game you can't quite grasp. collecting everything is easy, for the most part, it's just time consuming. And beating "real people" isn't as big of an achievement as you might think, but then again I beat "real people" regularly so maybe I'm just not as amazed by it as some people.

Well, when I was at E for All, I saw a few problems in the game. The Wii sometimes froze on people, and had to be restarted and some characters had no animation for using the hammer.

Maybe they're still fixing the freezing problem? I doubt it, but still.

Nothing will be added. Japanese commercials are playing, if anything it will only get delayed in America due to translation problems (meaning Sakurai finished the Japanese one a little later than they should have or added a lot during the delay) or the team on it is just overwhelmed with information to translate and rework.

They probably are wondering what to cut out in America that might seem offensive too. Tamagon for instance was cut out of the American version (the trophy) due to his game...and yet the Devil is in smash, so we'll see

Though, if there is a delay we should know about it by now. We're a month away from release and only weeks away from release in Japan. We'd know by now, or at least SHOULD...it is Nintendo we're talking about...

Either way, when it comes to delays, Nintendo is still a bunch of amateurs. Sony takes a game like LBP, promotes the living hell out of it, and then tells you it will be almost a year and a half before you're allowed to touch it while continuing to show you video's to watch the people squirm.

Nintendo, you ain't got NOTHING. You don't even have the fans pissing themselves yet.

Take it back to April, you might catch up to Sony's ineptitude in terms of Killzone 2 release.

It's tough catching news on this behind a corporate firewall - can someone check the NintendoWorldReport website for info? I caught this off of a forum post a few minutes ago:
Nintendo World Report has learned from a trusted source, who wishes to remain anonymous, that Wal-Mart's corporate database has indeed been updated to reflect an early March release for Brawl. With the world's largest retailer expecting a delay for the game, it can only be a matter of time before Nintendo makes an official announcement of Brawl's new release date.

Correction. Game Crazy WAS having financial problems. The Chapter 11 bankruptcy that was filed is basically a restructuring of the business. They are not going under. In my own personal opinion Movie Gallery bit off more than they could chew when they acquired Hollywood Video and Game Crazy. In 2008 they have went from having 1 regional running both sides of the business to a committed regional for each side of the business. They are also opening new stores in 2008 including stand alone locations. Doesn't sound like there are too many financials troubles anymore. They simply closed the stores down that weren't being profitable for the company. GameStop and other companies do the same thing with unprofitable stores.

To be honest if this was true i'd just have to laugh since here in europe we're probably not getting it till July anyway. It'll be a good evening of watching the american joystiq commenters hitting caps lock and starting petitions because they have to put up with half as much shit as we do.

And I don't anticipate it being delayed so close to the release.

Smash is a huge system seller, so it makes perfect financial sense to hold on to it till they actually need something to increase demand or at least have some systems to sell. In the mean time, we're stuck waiting. T_T I just hope it they use the time to add/polish stuff rather than just letting the finished master get dusty.

possible reasons:

1) They're putting in more characters/features (eg. Megaman), and thus, need some more time to get it in (thus, delaying JP release date as well).

2) They've put in TOO many characters/features, that when they were just about ready to start the DVD press, they're a few 100MB over the limit.

3) They've honored Capcom's relentless requests to delay the US launch, so that No More Heroes has some breathing room to increase their sales.

4) They want to avoid the release of Devil May Cry 4 craziness.

5) They realize that they don't have a AAA title, 1st or 3rd party, that will be released in the US between SSBM and Wii Fit. And thus, wants to shorten that gap between February and May (if the Wii Fit rumor of May release is held to be true).

6) A combination of all or several of the above...

No way. How long before a release date does a company have to begin printing, etc. so that they can actually get the shipments there on time? Japan's set for a release in a little more than 2 weeks. Time is gone for announcing delays. >.o And unless there's some horrible, crippling delay on the translation side of things, there's no way that they're going to delay the US release either.

Melee to me was just a simple pick up and play fighter that was good for casual gamers and stuff... but was no where near the depth of true fighters like Virtua Fighter 4. Being a hardcore fighter fan, I wouldn't play SSBM as more then just a game inbetween real fighting games.

I think it's more like this: People are pre-ordering the game, they aren't going to have enough for everyone so they're going to make that the date for if they run out of pre-ordered copies. I saw this from another persons point of view in a post, but it seems like it could be plausible.

I don't see what more bugs they need to iron out unless they're just delaying it for America for some stupid reason, Brawl has gone gold already...

Exactly, it takes two daays the basics of Melee down; Up+B, Down+B, R to Dodge, etc. But the true game happens when you start to learn how to apply those basics with great timing and using them different in ways depending on which character you're facing.

Kyle, I'm surprised you're saying all this, you're a fan of the deep-as-hell fighter, VF. I thought the whole "VF is deep" saying was nonsense after I played VF4 over a weekend. VF doesn't flow very well if you're a beginner, you know it. Every VF fan has had to defend VF from Tekken fanboys (who played VF for a little bit) who claim the VF combos don't gel. They do! Those guys just aren't doing them right. I saw expereinced people play VF4 and it was like I was watching a completely different game than the one I played

Trust me, they're lots of games that I didnt give a chance at first, but loved in the end: Devil May Cry 1,Halo, Guitar Hero, VF, FFX (not usually a fan or turn-based games)

I´m not saying that you must learn japanese to enjoy a japanese game, (itps true but itps not my point, but it would be good for you to study it for example), but that a person must have basic knowledge about war before criticizing a book or game or movie that´s about war. The act of "not getting" something isn´t questionable nor a subject to criticism because every person has subjects they don´t understand. But the act of criticising something you don´t understand is questionable, as it is to watch Fight club and hating it but you only watched 1/3 of the movie without seing the end of the flick.

I have a couple of friends. He and her wife had the same problem with smash bros, only seing a bunch of mess sprites and characters jumping around. Then after a while (and I don´t know why) they decided to buy the game and have it a try. Now they are addicted to it.

But I have a better example than this. shooter games like Gradius and Metal Slug always make up a mess of pixels, deaths and bullets that you can´t enjoy.

But if you concentrate and pay attention, you´ll love the challenge and hug the game as your best friend.

Hating something is part of your mood also. I always end up myself hating a game or movie or music when I´m upset , or love it when I´m in the mood.

Something can be boring, or annoying, if you´re anxous, or falling asleep.

Some are like deep, often obscure, indie flicks. The value isn't necessarily transparent. Then again, this might be a valid criticism. I just wouldn't make it myself.

See there's the first problem; you rented it. It's really hard to appreciate Smash if you've only had it for a few days.

Problem #2. Button mashing. If you button mash in Melee you're only just scratching the game's surface. Yes, Smash is often mistaken as a masher since it has a smaller, easier move set than other fighters. But after you get the hang of it you start to realize that the game is about timing. The simple move list exponentially grows when you realize certain moves have different a effects depending on when you do them and which character you do them against. That's why Smash is actually one of the deepest fighters out there(in my opinion, not trying to start a flame war here guys). Hardcore fighting gamers know every move that exists in SoulCal, Tekken, or SF but hardcore Smash players discover new things about the game even though Melee came out 2001. I've trained for tournaments with friends of mine, who are MLG (i'm def not, lol), and there are still things in Melee that they just found out.

Go to Youtube, search for some Smash combo videos or tourney vids, and you might see things that'll add a whole new dimension to what you know about Melee.

*sigh* If only there were any other good games to stay me over for that extra month. Oh, wait - I still need to play Bioshock, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, finish Mario Galaxy... I read in some magazine that *yes* Smash Bros. Brawl is delayed because the big N wanted more playable characters, including Duke Nuk'em and some sort of creature from Spore...
Also, they were reworking the game to also run on the Phantom...

Also, about GameFly, they might be pushing their own date back to March in order to stock up in preparation for massive rentals. And GameCrazy could just be wrong.

The game doesn't have a lot of VAs, mostly text. I guess the online network is too crazy for Nintendo WiFi.

I saw this on the G4 site this morning. It's lists Game Crazy and Gamefly as the source for the delay news. On Game Crazy's website it lists March 31st as being the release date. But there is no change on Game Crazy's master release schedule in the store. The MRS still says Feb. 10th. Also there is nothing about the change on the Game Crazy audix system, in store intranet, or communication from the higher ups. The only change to the date has been made on the Game Crazy website. The Gamefly site lists the release date as 03/12/08. The Nintendo website and the Dojo Dump still give the Feb. 10th, 2008 release date. Who knows. I'm going to try to see if one of my contacts has more info.

Ugh. I had a bad feeling about this by taking a look at the DOJO updates. Their pace has been quite slow and they only have 21 updates remaining. I'm sure Sakurai has many more things to reveal (Cpt. Falcon anyone?) and won't be able to reveal all by Feb 10th.

If (by some miracle) the delay means added voice support and improving the foretold long distance lag issues, then I'll accept the delay. We've been waiting years and a month won't be terrible; I want the absolute best that Brawl can offer. Either way the game's gonna sell millions.

Plus, its more time to spend games we would have ignored if Brawl was released on time; No More Heroes + Devil may Cry 4.

@foxuser17: Agreed. The release date isn't being pushed back at the same time as Nintendo cranking up their PR machine in Japan. TV Ads = Game has a set release date. And besides, Sakurai would tell us, right? It's only 30 days, 11 hours, 58 minutes and 56 seconds away!

Same thing happened to me with Assassin's Creed. Gamestop swore up and down that it got pushed back a week, yet I could find no other info to support such a claim, and it turned out to be false anyway.

@ARboom: A decade? Development started less than 3 years ago.

The way I look at it is: Nintendo does what they need to to make sure the final products live up to their standards. If that means I have to wait another month, fine. As I mentioned a while back, there's plenty of great stuff coming out in the first few months that I won't have to tear my hair out waiting for Brawl. If it does get delayed, I'll have more time to play DMC4.

I'm not too broken-hearted because I've got such a huge backlog of games to play (including 3 or 4 on the Wii alone) so as far as I'm concerned, Nintendo can push this back to mid-summer. I still won't be ready for it.

@okenny :): Holidays?? No, the game has gone GOLD in Japan, and they're airing tv commercials. It will be out in Japan within the month...a couple weeks delay is the most I'd expect for the NA release.
