@Codexx: Umm, I don't get that comment at all, since Logitech's Mac drivers are a bit lacking (I think DV8GODD pretty much covered that if you read up in the comments a bit), and Microsoft's are surprisingly good. If anything, a Logitech whose hardware was the same quality but whose drivers were written by Microsoft's Mac Division would be a win for Mac Users, and probably linux as well since the coding can't be that much different (assuming you can get MS to give you the source, unlikely I know).

DaiMacculate

From a business standpoint, it's great to have your stocks price raise.

But to the customers?

Upside:

Logitech may never work properly on a Mac or with Linux again.

Downside:

They'll start working right with MS programs and awkwardly with all others. Subtle encouragement to force you to use MS Paint instead of photoshop and all the other crappy free programs worth every cent you payed for them.

Oh God no, please no!

This is worse news than EA eating up Pandemic and Bioware.

Logitech is practically my favorite peripheral company out there. Microsoft doesn't even come close. Take their mice, for example. Logitech has sleek, ergonomic designs, and a wonderful warranty (3 years at the least, plus they will replace your mouse when you call, with no hassle). I used to own a MX1000 mouse which was excellent, and just bought a MX Revolution mouse a couple of days ago, which is WICKED AWESOME I might add. Both mice are just phenomenal.

Microsoft's mice are clunky and feel cheap (their scroll wheels are especially pathetic). Has anyone seen their new 'ergonomic' mouse? [www.microsoft.com] Take a look at that god damned freak of nature! You can kill someone with it!

I really hope this doesn't take place. As others have said: if it does, then Microsoft had better stay in the shadows and leave the hardware alone. If not, I'll have to find an alternative. Which will suck, since I use a Logitech mouse, speakers, and headset :(

Well, I suppose there's always Razer, Creative, and Sennheiser, respectively.

Tyber_Zann

@fuchikoma: Ah, understood now.

I think most of the incompatibility comes from the specialization. I know my Logitech mice work as standard mice without special drivers to start on any system, Mac or PC or whatever. It's just getting the special media/multiwheels/etc functionality that creates the problems.

But yeah... of all things to be specialized and require unique drivers: a mouse? Got a USB microscope, no sweat... but that mouse is gonna be a hassle. :/

dv8godd

Logitech driver support for Mac is abysmal (though 3rd party drivers on Mac are stellar), but MS does quite good Mac drivers. Kinda a moot point, I know, as most people don't care about Mac... but I use Logitech on my PCs too, and had issues with my MX Rev.

dv8godd

I have a better idea...

How about Logitech buy the guys that make Microsoft's mouse/keyboard drivers instead?

Logitech hardware is often extremely good... but their drivers are total ass. Microsoft has been somewhat hit or miss on mice, but I do like their keyboards. MS also gets "value" on their hardware items (I don't see them charging $150 for a wireless thumb keyboard).

What I really want is Logitech mice and keyboards at a more economical price but with Microsoft drivers.

dv8godd

As long as MS adopts Logitech's mouse designs instead of dissolving them, I'm okay with this...I heart Logitech mice, but don't really care for their keyboards (too squishy for the most part, though the G15 is pretty responsive). MS tries too hard to be "universal" with their mouse designs so you can use it left or right handed with minimal adjustment, which only results in pain for either party.

Norellicus

This would ruin my workday. I trust / love my Logitech keyboards and mice. I have had the same Logitech Keyboard for like 8 years and it won't die (even though I have poured soda on it, dropped, kicked, slammed, etc). Then I buy 1 Microsoft keyboard and the thing won't last a year (burned traces killed the qwerty part of my keyboard). Quickly replaced that with a Logitech board / mice combo, and I love it.

This would force me to stock up on Logitech boards or switch to Mac boards because I just don't trust MS to build a good piece of hardware. Their mice broke on me, their keyboards broke on me, and if I had a 360 odds are it would break on me.

RBecho

I wouldn't say MS just can't make decent mice - the original Intellimouse Explorer was pretty decent, for example - it just seems they've forgotten how. But then, Logitech seemed to have dropped the ball on mice as well last time I went to buy one. I came home from the shop with a thing (MX Revolution? Something like that) that literally didn't have a middle-mouse click, and I couldn't use the drivers to remap anything convenient to that either. Three and a half billion buttons that I can set to 'switch grenade type' or whatever, but no middle-mouse click. I managed to take it back and find somewhere to sell me an MX1000, which is a great mouse but still fails at middle-click, interpreting it as a scroll up, down or sideways more often than not.

(MS keyboards are easily the best keyboards on the market, though, to my eye. The Natural Ergonomic 1000 is by far and away the most comfortable [typist's] keyboard I've ever had the pleasure to use. Being in the position where I touch-type, own a PC and a 360 but no PS3, my rather selfish first concern at this idea was that something might happen to MS' keyboards... :/)

Bichatse

Logitech makes brilliant hardware, most gamers I know have Logitech keyboards and mice, in fact, I don't know any gamer personally that uses Razer or Microsoft. To a degree a lot of desktop owners I know also use their speakers.

But SetPoint sucks-- it's dodgy at best and could be much better. Microsoft's software for their high-end keyboard and mice is much better, so I would hope Logitech could benefit from that.

I doubt much would happen other than Logitech getting more financing and making better software and better hardware. It hasn't been relatively long that they've been into gaming compared to other desktop peripherals of a more business grade.

@Witzbold: Yeah, and I would agree its probably past time for me to look at replacing this keyboard/mouse with something higher performance and better gripped, but its servicable. Not like Apple's recent Mouse/Keyboard "upgrade", the keyboard is ok if way too low profile, but the Mighty Mouse is complete garbage. I tried using it for 2 weeks at work after we got new machines, then finally brought in my trusty MS wireless to replace it. Only thing that sucks about it is that the Mac doesn't recognize it before the OS loads, so if I want to go to the disk select screen during reboot and load Windows (once a month or so, so not too bad), I have to dig the apple mouse/keyboard out for that one task.

DaiMacculate

Anyways in all seriousness this doesn't bother me to much. I was prolly just gonna pick up the next iteration of the gt force pro myself. They're gonna keep making pc stuff they just won't make console accessories. And with the expection of racing wheels which only microsoft was in dire need of a good one.

@Witzbold: Actually, I've had nothing but great experiences with my Microsoft hardware products (mice + keyboards, not the 360 stuff), personally. Anybody who has seen me post more than 10 or 15 times here knows I'm not the biggest fan of the company, but one thing they do decently (or bought somebody who could at some point) is make mice and keyboard. My current MS Wireless Desktop set has literally lasted twice as long and still going as the Logitech one I bought 3 years ago (6 months before the keyboard basically died).

I've owned other logitech stuff and it was decent, so nothing against them, but I fail to see why MS would need to buy them.

@Garo,

You took the word out of my mouth. If this is true, then MS will continue once again and proove that they are a giant monopolistic company.

@Witzbold,

That probably what going to happen if MS get a hold of them 8-(, no more other platforms peripherals they will stick to PC and 360 stuff. Am I glad I have my MOMO steering wheel that work nicely inf GT5 : Prologue!

Intruder

@Garo: /agree

This would be a very bad thing for gamers. Both companies are the only ones who make decent keyboards and mice (IMO). We need the competition to keep the prices down. Plus, Logitech make the best steering wheels for PS2/PS3. I might have to pick up my G25 sooner, rather than later.

Doshu
