Wow. This is some bullshit. Its a bait and switch if there ever was one. I spent 9 hours today getting Portal among the rest of the free offerings only to find out that the special offer is nothing more than the same crap most people hand out for free. Hell, the Portal Demo isn't even long enough to pass for a real demo. You don't get to try any puzzles that are more than just tutorials. At least in most demos, you get to try one real sequence before they regurgitate you to some splash screen.

Actual length of the demo? 20 minutes. Yeah. Thats it. Thats a little under one and a half gigabytes for every 10 minutes of entertainment. You get to the end of test chamber 10, don't get to hear any of the really enjoyable GladOS dialogue and generally have a very shoddy experience as far as demos go. Very sad considering just how awesome Portal and the rest of Orange Box actually are when not in some crazy backwards promotional gag.

Just to let anyone who's still not sure about it know: Portal: First Slice is a demo of Portal, so anyone with Portal who tries to get it is wasting their time (though they could just uncheck Portal: First Slice in the download list, along with anything else they already have, and just get what they don't, from Lost Coast, HL2DM, Peggle Extreme).

Even if you hate Steam, there's an option to disable it from starting with Windows. That way you'll never have to bother with it. Although, if you're as addicted to Team Fortress 2 as I am, those 5 seconds to click start>Steam can take away from valuable game time.

And for everyone asking about it, "First Slice" consists of the first 10 tests. It was great, but I really wish it included one or two tests where you had the option to create the red portal as well as the blue.

It's not the best deathmatch game, but flinging toilets can be funny, and it's not part of the Orange Box. I'd definitely take it over the first third of Portal.

I downloaded it at about 800-900kb/s and installed it. It's a little bit larger than a gig. So far it seems the same but I haven't gotten very far. I'm willing to bet that it's probably the same as the other demo but I don't know as I haven't played anything portal related.

My GeForce 1 broke down a week after the two year warranty ran out... the replacement card (GeForce 4 MX) died a few days after the one year warranty ended :(
Since then I'm not really an Nvidia fan. But I already own Portal anyway.

@dafunkk12:That was just Halflife 2. Not only that, if you remember there was a big screw up with code being stolen from Valve, so the game was delayed fore a long time. Meanwhile many, many ATI cards were sold with free HL2 coupons. I think it was sour grapes for both companies.

Remember, ATI paid quite a but of money (I think 4.4 million dollars) to partner with Valve on this coupon thing.

@Atrahasis: The main reason I got the Orange Box was for TF2. I loved TFC many years ago. I had already played through Portal on someone else's account, so that was kind of a freebie for me. Other than that, I now have Half-Life 2 ready and willing for whenever I decide to play that. (Hopefully after actually playing the original Half-Life.)

Weird, I want to register for it, and it tells me I'm eligible (yay!), but when I try to finalize it all, it says the offer has already been redeemed on another Steam account (boo!).

That makes no sense. Hopefully it's just an error and I haven't lost my chance to get more Portal.

What does "special version" mean? Is it the full game? Or as the subtitle "First Slice" might lead one to assume, its some sort of demo or something?
