All joking aside, I don't mind some of these things, but a GPS... who is honestly going to use that feature? I know if you were given a computer you wouldn't use it for just gaming either and that's not a bad thing, but computers have always been multiple things capable on one system. That brings up that other side saying that the PSP is just a condensed version of the PC at a more affordable price with portability and other stuff... I dunno where I'm trying to go with this.

The PSP also does allow the use of a lot of things that you'd usually have to buy separately, like an MP3 player. I mean, that's cool and all, but some of the other things just boggle my mind as to who is going to use it. Skype isn't a bad idea... The keyboard might be good for internet... I don't see the point of putting movies on it though, I wouldn't be able to stand watching something on a screen like that.

Anyways, props for Sony bringing up new innovation for PS3 to PSP compatibility, now if only Nintendo would hurry up and do something unique for DS to Wii connectivity and then if those all go well Microsoft will probably make a hand held or something... I just hope people don't have the mind set that any of these systems need to die off because it's competition that brings out the best in companies and game titles. I suppose I can appreciate the fact Sony is doing something Microsoft and Nintendo aren't doing.

Great games are being made for it; it is a very well designed game machine. I fail to see how it isn't as good a game focused machine as any of the others or how the games and the system is less fun for this?

You could say the same of the 360 and say because of its movie download service it's not focused on the games. It's there if you want it if not, it does games just fine. If I thought that perhaps their games were suffering due to these multimedia enhancements, I might understand. But this is obviously not the case, as has been mentioned many times, Sony has some of the best inhouse developers around. They may not all make games I want to play, but I respect their talent and work. They are are dedicated to games, they aren't stopping and working on features for the ps3 or psp.
If you're trying to say that the PS3 was envisioned too much as a multimedia device, and not enough focus as gamemachine, I don't have space to fully go into that that here, but I disagree. A balance was struck, and I bought the ps3 over the 360(may still get one) largely due to those decisions that were made.

I think Sony has of late been very good at delivering things that have value (possibly due to their loss of market leader in this gen).

I do not think you have a good argument as to why Sony is not focused on games. They are large company and can offer a lot of aspects simultaneously, just as MS can.

Did you buy the PSP because they promised that it would have awesome connectivity with the next gen Playstation? I'm thinking not. More than likely, you bought it for the fact that it is a kickass little machine in its own right for playing games, etc. So if you only bought the PSP to play games, then you should be happy with what you have. On top of that, they've added TONS of functionality to the original PSP over the years. So there's really no reason for you to complain.

Anything that sells more PSPs is GOOD for you, because then you'll get more (and better) games in the end. AND - they continue to add more features to the PSP. So no, you didn't get screwed over. I was an early adopter and I never regretted it.

It's more like them selling you a car, and adding features to the car you bought every few months. After a few years, they put out a new model of the car. But you complain because you feel you got screwed, even though you enjoyed driving the car for the years you've had it. THEN, they give you a feature to open your garage door remotely without charging you for it. But since you don't have a garage, you start complaining about it.

I'm all for a little good piracy, but Sony's going to promote direct plug&play piracy of movies, as long as you pirate to a PSP? Just join netflix and burn as many movies as you like to your PSP? I know it's already possible to rip DVDs and other disks, but to make it one button to rip a digital copy to your PSP, just to promote PSP is pretty awful for a company like Sony to do.

Actually, software on PS3 is doing pretty well considering the install base. Last I checked, the attach-rate for Assassin's Creed was actually higher on PS3 than on 360.

Where did I say this? Basically it doesn't seem like Sony is pushing their system as a game system, it's purpose to them is a cheap blu-ray player it seems, the PSP just seems like a device to them. I mean if they'd just advertise it for what they are, game systems... I've actually heard people talk about the PSP and someone said they had felt so stupid because they had found out "It can play games?" I'd like to see Sony do better, but really... They need to advertise their games instead of their hardware. They don't seem to care about the games they just seem to care that people are buying their blu-ray player.

@Doshu: No, really, my only knock on it is just that they're not showing off anything that benefits gaming, this is purely multimedia. Though I can understand it, being that this is more a general technology convention and not someplace to flaunt specifically the gaming side of things.

I'm all for things getting more value for those that already own other pieces of the puzzle. But like myself, I don't have that kind of money. I own this PC and a DS, and that's it on my end of things, so while this is 'Hey, that's cool.'. I'm not saying 'zomg, teh sonys have no games!1', I'm saying 'Hey, why not put some of this effort into bringing new modes of gaming as well.' I'd suggest, say, making any PS2 game you put in your PS3 portably playable via remote access or something, but that wouldn't be feasible anymore.

You're making the assumption that the people who develop these features are the same people who make games for the devices. And you're also making the assumption that gaming and these features are mutually exclusive. They're not. You can have both.

FYI: You can also have a car with air conditioning, cruise control, a CD player, an MP3 player and a GPS. None of that stops the car from being useful for getting to work or racing it on the track on weekends.

Personally, I like it when devices get added functions. Sure, I bought my PS3 to play games on. But the fact that it's also a very capable machine for watching videos, listening to music and surfing the net are all bonuses. And I'm pretty sure none of the developers who created those features were taken off games development to do so.

Also, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. There's other nice online games if that's your thing, like Warhawk and Unreal Tourney III. Folklore is one of the finest RPG's of the new generation so far (my opinion: I love everything about it). Eye of Judgment is interesting and unique. And there's a lot more on the way.

Look at some of the studios that Sony either owns or has partnerships for exclusivity with... the list is impressive. You have to admit that they've been really good about snatching up talent and keeping them for themselves. You've got David Jaffe and all the God of War team (Santa Monica Studio), you've got Insomniac games, you've got Incog, of course there's Team ICO, the Liverpool Studio (formerly Psygnosis), Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog, Polyphony Digital.

There commitment to ensuring talented developers work exclusively for them is pretty remarkable.

There's plenty of great games on psp and ps3 and I use the other features of both devices just fine as well, and I'm happy to have new options and features.

Go to metacritic and check ratings for both platforms. If they are not to your liking they are to someone's. I have more ps3 and psp games that i enjoy than I have time to play them. YMMV.
I do have CFW on my psp, and that adds to it, but even vanilla psp is an amazing little device with lots of great games.

P.P.P.S - *RELATED TO THIS ARTICLE!* I am guessing the movies will have a resolution reduction. There's no sense in storing them at full 1920x1080. Plus, it will most likely be stored with a more lean compression format. Lastly, it will likely not encode the special features, just the movie. Hopefully you'll be able to choose which audio track and subtitles to include in the transfer, which will be useful for those of us with large foreign film and anime collections. Although, admittedly, there aren't many foreign films or animes on Blu-Ray yet...but I do have a few. And more are on the way, for sure. I wish that it would support regular DVD's, though I guess that isn't really necessary because you can use a PC with a DVD-ROM drive to rip that media and then use a converter to make it into a file format the PSP will read. Ignore me.

The reason that Blu-Ray movies are so large is because they are high-res -- a much higher resolution than is necessary for the PSP screen.

As such, I would assume that the movies are downscaled to the res of the PSP screen (480x272, IIRC), making the file size of each movie substantially smaller.

It will probably take a long time however, and i bet the PSP will need to remain connected the entire process.

That's not true.. you're just compressing into a MUCH smaller resolution. Would take up a small amount of space. I remember compressing XVID movies that way to my MP3 player--I think they were around 100 MB instead of the usual 600-800.

Wouldn't some Blu-Rays reach 25 gig, topping the 16gb limit?

Though I think some discs are just stupidity. FF2 was 2 50gb discs, but there's no way that was necessary.

The DRM involved will be what I'm looking for next. If it's anything like the PS3-PSP bonding that occurs now then it'll be great.

Getting back to the UMD, this makes it irrelevant for a lot of the new movies. But overall...definitely helps the PSP.
