I am surprised to find so many people commenting that the boy got what he deserved for handing his father a rifle and asking him to shoot. It is obvious from the series of events that there were many problems in this family, and it can be expected that any child raised in such a dysfunctional family would be emotionally unstable. To say such things as "he deserved to be eliminated from the gene pool" shows a certain lack of compassion and immaturity that I find disappointing.

Humans are complex emotional creatures. We must all gain an understanding of our feelings and learn how to deal with them. Many of us live our entire lives without learning how to truly understand and react to our emotions in a way that is positive. To condemn a boy of only 17 years to death for not handling his emotions of despair differently is hard for me to understand. It appears that this boy was very emotionally unstable, perhaps even trying to in some bizarre way to test his fathers love for him. Who knows the details of what have passed.

Clearly however the boy needed and still needs help in becoming an emotionally mature individual. Hopefully he will survive and overcome whatever emotional problems he has. Perhaps he may even become a hard working and functional member of society.

Less personal info? Where do you get this? You have to give just as much personal info, if not more to buy a gun. All the info that is needed for a criminal background check on any firearm is as much as anything, if not more. They still have to call it in to their State Police processing for the check. (I used to sell guns, it is an all info process)

No outright gun ban of any kind, just more accountability. You know a fair middle ground. And I'll say it again, put individual serial numbers on bullets. It's the simplest thing in the world, do it with a bar code or RFID for Christ's sake, but do it. That way, if there is a crime there is an immediate connection to who purchased the bullets and where they bought them. Police all around the country are for this but the gun lobby isn't. You think that's just them protecting our right to bear arms are protecting themselves?

99% of the people who legally own guns, do not commit these sort of crimes. A story pops up out of the blue and there is huge outcry ... all this control will do, is make it harder for legalized citizens who have the right to protect themselves, to get the tools they need. Criminals will still be criminals, and unless they are not making more strides against the illegal activity, the innocent should not suffer.

I agree, there should be control measures, but ones that don't hamper or conflict on the constitutional rights, that already do now. Crack down on the illegals not the innocent. And you can walk in get a knife, and slice someone's throat. You cant just walk in and buy again, if the background check doesnt fly, you are SOL, unless it is done illegally.

In any case, I live in LA and went to college in a small town in Arizona. I've only ever seen a gun once in LA, and it was a little gangster kid showing it off to his friends behind me in front of a mall. A small 22, like a lady derringer or something. I don't think I've been that freaked out before, because I knew that kid had no scruples or maturity to know the consequences of his actions if he had decided to cap me, lol.

In Arizona I saw guns on a daily basis. Over there people are allowed to carry them on their person. There's a lot of ranchers and farm workers that need to protect their land from predatory animals, so having a gun at their side in those situations is almost mandatory. As a result, people wear their guns everywhere, the grocery store, the post office, my school job fair... In either case, I never felt so safe. Why? Who in their right mind is going to commit a crime when you're surrounded by a room full of "heroes" packing heat?

I said it was the next step up. It's still far weaker than 9MM and is perhaps one of the weakest rounds you can buy that use powder. They can kill, but you would have to try hard. I used to fire them a long time ago, .22 is the only rifle we're allowed in the UK and even then only inside a special club under extra high security. Sucks.

I was holding guns since age fifteen. I knew my father had them, but I could never access them unless he brought them to me. 1) While back in the day a militia might be able to hold there own against the government, but in 2008... Nukes, Stealth Bombers, Tanks, Unmanned Aerial Drones, Armored Attack Vehicles, Stinger Missiles, 50. Cal Sniper Rifles, Aircraft Carriers, Battleships, F-22's, not to mention bio and chemical weapons... The list goes on. Unless the entire military stepped down it's just a gun owners dream that if push came to shove a bunch of American citizens with all the rifles, pistols and shotguns in the world would stand a snowball's chance in hell of beating the US Military in actual combat.

2) When the 2nd Amendment was written current weapon technology couldn't even be imagined. I have no problem with people owning guns. I like going to the range now and again myself, but there needs to be stricter limits on what kind of weapons can be owned and how easy it is to get them. A gun has one actual purpose, to kill. It may be either in self defense or as an offensive weapon, but what it designed to do is clear regardless of the morals of the person holding the weapon. We could easily move to having something similar to getting a drivers license and having your car registered with firearms. It's common sense that not everyone is responsible enough to have a gun and it's a relatively easy to weed a large portion of those people out. And before you say, "well too bad that what the 2nd Amendment says" I would remind you that just like the founders couldn't conceive of a world with fully automatic weapons and Hollow point rounds they also couldn't conceive of an America where black people were citizens or women were equals. Oh and while black people weren't citizens then felons still were and they could have all the guns they wanted back then. Times change and laws need to change with them.

I'm sure you are a responsible gun owner and most likely it's absolutely fine that you own a few guns, but can't we agree that there is a common sense middle ground to keep guns out of the hands of people who simply shouldn't have them. Isn't it worth maybe having to wait an extra day or so to get a gun or having to go to a DMV like place for firearms so that more of our friends, neighbors and family members don't get killed because of stupidity, anger or greed?

As for this case, yes the son is an idiot, but that is absolutely no excuse for the father to have pulled the trigger. None.

Oh and for the record, I have a few friends in the Military and I know a few cops as well and they will all tell you that unless you are a psychopath it is much harder to actually to stab or bludgeon someone then shoot them. It's a much bigger mental hurdle to actually take a life with you own hands than from a distance.

Regardless, I hope the kid is ok even if he is an idiot. Oh and while where at it is it that hard to put individual serial numbers on bullets? Makes people a hell of a lot more accountable and has nothing to with the 2nd Amendment.

I've been handling them since I was 12, with live ammo since I was 13, owning a couple of my own at the same age. Only accident I've ever had was due to a poorly manufactured round, which I came away from unharmed because I wore the proper safety shit.

If you think a guy @ 17 handling a weapon is instantly reckless endangerment, you better lockdown anything pointy in your house next time a child comes around. God forbid they should get irritating while trying to eat dinner with a fork and you decide to retaliate by stabbing it in the face.

I guess I'll chime in about how much good gun control has done for DC. People seem to shoot each other in the face just fine with the illegal guns, but even federal security force members can't carry to defend themselves. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Hopefully, city bans will be lifted soon. It's very insulting when even 'anti-gun' congressman / congresswoman can carry 24/7, but the people that protect them can't. It's pretty funny when you have people wanting to ban guns for people that are trained to use them by people that retain the right to carry themselves in the same region. Yeah, they might as well say "we're more important than citizens." PS: I'm from the UK (were very anti gun, there totally illegal) and we had multiple shooting across the country from gangs on new years day. The reason the second ammendment should not be repealed is as simple as the basic concept of civil uprising. The United States was founded out of war: based on the concept that should a government become too tyrannical, we have a responsibility to rise and overthrow it. There's a reason the battle of Lexington and Concord were the first of the War: they were fought to seize munitions and arms. If only the police and armies were to have access to firearms, there would be no way for our militias to engage them in combat. It's an essential concept voiced by John Locke: that the government truely does what is best for the people because if they do not, the people can rise in violent revolution against them.

No, that's not true. You can't purchase one, or purchase ammo for one. At least in Virginia, you can buy a handgun at age 18, but can't buy handgun ammo until 21. You can't buy other firearms if you're under 18, but you can legally own them. So, basically, in order to purchase mine, I went out with my father and uncle and bought an M4 after selling some of our old M1s...

In fact, it's legal for someone of any age to own a shotgun, if their parents fill out the proper paperwork. I seem to recall some news story a while back of some grandfather giving a family heirloom shotgun to his grandson the day he was born, so the family filled out paperwork, sent in the baby picture, and the less-than-one-year-old had a picture ID stating he could own and carry a shotgun.

1. they were in America where 90% of the people (if not more) couldn't care less about an Indian caste system.

2. If the daughter doesn't care then why should she be spared the humility (I don't know if that's the correct use of that word)
