It's fascinating in terms of "player-generated content", too - basically just shooting light-years ahead of anything anyone's even considered and becoming a game that is maintained and moderated by the players as well as having them make all the content.

Interesting thing they both have in common is daily turn limits. That might be something of a requirement for witty games.

Stuff just isn't funny if you do it over and over and over and over.... But, without a daily turn-limit preventing it (or at least strongly discouraging it and forever insisting that it isn't a requirement), well... that's kinda what an MMO is at the moment, eh?

Grind grind grind...

Game writers aren't union though, Reilaos, so they can't strike. Or I suppose they could, but it'd really be more like going on 'quit'.

What's tough is to get that comedic sort of personality that can operate within the arbitrary boundaries of technical limitations and still be funny, read the players complaining about how much he sucks (maybe 1 in 10 praising his work, but then without knowing who did what) and still be funny, pull a few months of crunch time at a stretch and still be funny, and do that for 5 to 10 years on a game most people get tired of after 6 months (maybe even he, too), and still be funny.

All the while he also can't let it get him down that his work will never provide him with one dime of residuals (certainly not if he leaves the company, and possibly not regardless), even if the game is a run-away smash hit that carries on for a decade after he's gone, or gets remade for the PSbox3ii by an all-new team, as a vehicle to deliver his old humor (property of the game publisher, now).

I mean, it's not like the Star Trek television and/or motion-picture franchise, where every time a new Star Trek Anything is made they have to dig-up Gene Roddenberry and give him a cut of the loot.

If he can write something for any other branch of the entertainment industry, that wouldn't be so... but he'd need to never mind that.

So he could still be funny, yeh?

Funny people are usually wicked smart, though, and this... this does not sound like a smart person.

Then you'll probably need more than one of him.

Probably the next best thing would be a an MMO with lots of satire in it, on account of being developed by some jaded, grumpy, sad old bags taking-out their frustrations by sabotaging what was supposed to be dramatic with dark, twisted, sardonic, humor so compelling that the IP can never be taken seriously again.

Unless it's a hit.

'Cause then there's be a sequel made with the goal of being humorous, and oh! what a sober affair that will be.
