I worked with Martin back in the day at Radical and have to say he will be sadly missed. He was skilled in both software engineering and hardware hacking (back when we built our own dev systems). He was a great guy, was lots of fun, and was a key figure in helping create the ever expanding game industry biz in Vancouver.

For all the haters out there, I feel sorry for you as you are obviously feeling under appreciated and lonely. Spewing your negativity in forums like this is just sad an lame, not to mention what it does to your already crappy karma.

Paying your respects to those that have passed is what we as compassionate humans do. If this isn't a proper place to do so, I don't know what is.

Adios Martin, you will be missed.

I agree with moshakirby. I've had grand parents die, school friends die and even game industry related work mates die and not once were they mentioned on Kotaku . We did what sensible people do, we thought about that person's life briefly and then got on with the lives we have rather than wasted our time posting an article about it on Kotaku.

The gaming community is not that tight knit and being old, he probably would have died anyway. When I die, no one better be sulking about it, because they should have better things to do.

Very sad news. Sega Soccer Slam was one of the most played party games on the GC at my house mainly because it was so easy to pick up and enjoy. Not all of my friends are experienced gamers but they all enjoyed this title because of casual friendly gameplay.

The Black Box NHL Hitz games were great fun. So much better then the EA stuff, it was a perfect update of Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. Using X2F01 as a name is brilliant. I should play some Hitz for a memorial of Sikes.

@moshakirby: It's simple, really. The gaming industry is a tight knit group, and those who follow the industry (ie. Kotakuites) consider most people in the industry to be worthy of some measure of respect, weather or not they like their games. Fact is, game industry people made it, they made their mark, did something that will forever live in gaming fame or infamy, and when they leave us, it's ALWAYS worth a mention. Most people in the industry were once just fans like many people here.

Above all, this is a VIDEO GAME site. Kotaku doesn't post news about political figures dying or any other celebrities for that matter. It's completely relevant.
