@badasscat: It's called options and playing a straddle strategy on the stock right before earnings. Play the volatility correctly since it gets rallied up a shit load before earnings, make your range big enough so the stock doesn't jump higher or drop lower than the expected values from the volatility, and you've made yourself some money my friend.

That's just a strategy to work with earnings and will work if the stock goes up or down. Cut your risk with a 2/3 chance of winning where the only way you can lose is if the stock goes beyond the volatility predictions.

@spiderweb1986: I agree with Spiderweb, this is the future for Gamestop I see. Of course folks like me who live where broadband is a distant dream (and the White House 65 miles away-who'd a thunk it?) are in a large minority still. This won't happen until the current generation of gamers are in their 40s at least.

@physalis925: If digital distribution takes off (which it probably won't for at least another five or ten years since there are still a lot of people without access to high-speed connections at home), then I'd imagine that GameStop would eventually follow the road Blockbuster's heading down and die slowly because they can't compete anymore.

@Sixtail: Actually, 07 sells for like 20$ now, so you'd get about 1.50$ for it. 06 sells for about 2-5$. Thats how sports games work, and thats why my cousin generally buys games that are 1-2 years old (I would too, if I gave a shit about sports games.)

The guys behind the counter don't really care if you buy a strategy guide. They're required to ask that. Once you get past the corporate BS most gamestop employees are gamers and are fairly knowledgeable about games, I find.

I laugh everytime I go into one of these stores. The guys that work at the local store shouldn't be allowed to breed, let alone sell electronic equipment. I tend to pull parents aside and help em best I can while I'm in there, otherwise they will end up with a strategy guide and a tshirt for the game their kid didn't want

@kingclip: They don't need to but it would be nice if they could answer some questions for the people that are actually informed when it comes to games. Most of the time it is the parents that go in there for presents for their children and will listen to pretty much anything they say. Might also have had something to do with the Wii and parents buying those systems and games and accesories. Parents usually don't know much and can be sold on just about anything.

@DigitalHero: While I can't give them a total pass on the crappy trade in prices, I must point out that all GS's are drawing from the same warehouses and as such, game values can't help BUT suck when your trading it in at a branch of a huge mega corp that gets countless trade ins every single year. How can Madden 2007 be worth anything more then 10$ when they have 100k copies of it?

But as for the price jacking, used video games are where's the money is at, always has been, new games don't make them anything at all.

Yeah, the rob their customers on trade-ins and used game prices. $54 for a used PS3 or Xbox 360 game when it retails for $59? That is some savings Lamestop... XD

@ballaboy311: They do, the big issue is they can't keep them and the second is a lot of games do not good retailers make. You have to balance a fine line between selling good stuff and selling crap if you want to keep a job.

It's also entry level work, no one stays there for long without a honest to goodness love of people and all the shit retail throws at you.

Somebody's misunderstanding something somewhere. I don't see these analysts saying "buy the stock now". Clearly, if this is about this past holiday earnings, it's already too late.

Look at any stock this way: by the time you hear the news, the stock is already priced at least six months beyond it.

This season's earnings were priced in probably around June. As news of the brisk sales trickled out over the past few months, no doubt more people bought it. It's not like Kotaku and Next-Gen are the first sites in the world to realize that people are buying a lot of games.

When you buy any stock, you're buying it on future earnings, not current earnings. (Look at the P/E ratio, and that'll tell you how far ahead the stock price is looking.)
