And how from that moment on, every fanboy on a budget bitched and moaned that Nintendo went back on its "promise" when they sold NES games for $5 a pop? This is similar.

If PSN were to offer a flat rate, it would be like GameTap in that you can only use the downloads so long as you were a paying member. There's no other way they'd offer such a deal.

What they're considering is more like this:
Cable TV: all the movies and "on demand" you want, for a subscription fee.

Not this, which resembles the current setup:
Purchasing DVDs, Blu-Ray, Amazon Unbox, etc: you buy the content and can use it anywhere, subject to restrictions like digital rights management.

What we haven't seen suggested:
Rentals. Why not? Probably because it's silly to charge a dollar for limited use of a Playstation One game (which would probably be cracked and stolen anyway), when Sony can charge six dollars and let you keep it forever.

Personally I prefer it this way because to be perfectly honest the PSN store does not always get content that I would buy and I would rather not have to pay for a service that I am not using all the time. This is why I like the idea of the PSNtickets since I only pay for what I want when I want it.

If the people at Sony provided a great deal of worthwhile content more often then I would consider it, but as it stands I just want the Network tickets to be released in the US so I can import them here in Kuwait and buy a bunch of games.

That's what I'm afraid of.

While I pay to play MMO's, they constantly tweak and expand those games, maintain the servers and provide customer service / GMs if something goes wrong. I feel I get my money worth from that.

But the day I start paying to play games with no associated "service" is the day I swallow razor wire, pull it out my ass and floss myself to death.

It's typically the disc drive that goes, and iirc there are plenty of third party replacements for that. For me taking the thing apart and cleaning it semi regularly (as in bi-annually) worked the trick.

Just hooked it up again. Such a great pad. The D-pad is kickass and the analog stick has just the right amount of resistance to justify its small range.

WTF!?! I was pretty sure Sega destroyed there consumer confidence with Sega32x, Sega CD, and then Saturn poor design, and lack of 3d capability. Sony didnt set fire to their offices. Sega accrued so much debt, and bad PR that by the time the Playstation 2 arrived there was little Sega could do to bankroll the longterm viability of the Dreamcast.

If the answer to more good games, whether the be retro or brand new, I may subscribe. As it stands, I would benefit more from buying a PSN download once every 3 months than paying a monthly subscription fee in hopes that they will add something good that month.

on the other hand, if it went towards sony porting more psx games and putting them on the store, or giving them more incentive to release stuff on the european store earlier, a small fee wouldn't be too bad. i still wouldn't pay it though.

Either that or downloads go away once you unsubscribe.

Once I have it, I'd like to keep it.

But overall, this could be a way they could charge for service (aka XBL) and still give a lot of stuff for it. To the average person, this would look like a lot better deal than XBL's "Pay us $50 and make your own f**king servers" program.

It seems like a money loser at first, but if enough people go for the flat rate I could see it working.

I never in the world would consistently download games, let alone would Sony ever provide a consistent, continuous stream of them enough to warrant such a thing. This is great for those people who are dying to repurchase their PS1 collection in every republished format imaginable, but for the now more casual gamer, I am more than happy with paying per title as I can't comprehend playing much from the PS1 era these days asides from Puzzle Fighter and Hot Shots/Minna No Golf titles (of which already have PSP iterations themselves).

The problem with gametap is that I don't have nearly the desire to play those games as I would to play a PSN title. Otherwise, I'd surely pay the $60 a year.
