Second, I think you played it for about 30 mins because it was your cousin's PS2 and not yours. In any case, there's no way you played through the whole thing.

Third, and most importantly, how the hell can you call yourself a gamer not having played MGS on PSX and Not owning a PS2? My grandma has a PS2 for crissakes.

I think more people are going to buy the PS3 for FFXIII than for MGS4. MGS is just a has-been series, sales have been declining rapidly with each new installment. Kojima has stated many time before that he would retire because he'd long lost interest in making MGS games forever, but somehow he either changes his mind or is coerced into making another MGS game and it's really showing.

MGS1 was the best, closely followed by 2 and MGS 3 is just Rambo The Game. I don't even know what to call MGS 4 it just seems ill-conceived and does not know what it wants to do.

Soldrak

I can't imagine LBP selling better than say Viva Pinata especially when you consider that objectively the "game" aspect of LBP is pretty shallow. It just The Incredible Machine meets Line Rider with 3D graphics (but purely 2D gameplay). Definitely not a system seller. User-created levels? Meh. Been doing that since NES Excitebike and up thru Halo 3 Forge.

TrettOff

@Thrillhaus: When compared to that list? I don't think it's really an overestimation. The only strong, proven title/franchise sales wise is GTA4, which is multiplatform, which will definitely help it's sales. None of the other titles really pop out at me as huge first-week sales. If Smash manages to achieve everything it's been promising, then I could see it being a sales hit, or at the very least, doing consistently well over the long haul, better than the others anyway.

Ampillion, Dayman.

So, GTA IV is the ONLY 360 game???????? 360 releases have been the biggest money makers on a consistent basis. Why would that change next year???

For sports fans, most will admit knowing of the seeming 'east coast bias' in the sports media. I'm noticing a 'Sony bias' that has been going on for years that keeps believing the PS3 will be the ultimate winner of this gen and keep talking about future releases for the PS3 being huge. Enough of a pattern has developed this gen where they should just stop. Wii sells the most console, 360 sells the most games, PS3 enjoys a decent 3rd place.

I think alot of you are really overestimating the market appeal of smash bros. The wii's huge sales figures are due to casual gamers, who dont really know anything about, or honestly even really care about, that game. It wont sell more than galaxy, thats for sure, and as we all know galaxy isnt exactly the huge hit you would expect a mario game to be. The wii market just isnt based solely on that "traditional gamer" demographic anymore. Wii fit will sell big. Smash bros will do respectable, but it wont be one of the biggest selling games of the year.

Thrillhaus

I can't wait for LBP...its gonna be the Youtube of gaming. It's gonna be really neat what kind of fun and demented things people come up with. It will also have a ranking system so the better levels get ranked higher and the dumb levels get dug down.

MGS4 is a must have for any PS3 owner. I have followed MGS ever since i played the first demo on PSone, and I played that thing everyday until my parents caved to get me the full game. You don't play MGS for gameplay really, even though the gameplay is pretty tight. you play it because of the storyline and the cutscenes...fantastic production values in every game so far. Mark my words, a lot more consoles will sell when MGS4 and Final Fantasy come out. Don't have the PS3, both consoles (xbox and PS3) have great exclusives, x-bots don't need them all.

fragged_23

@StrangeLove: While it might be wishful thinking that everyone will go from non-gamers to 8-hours-a-day addicts, it's actually pretty sound to expect that people who once found gaming un-accessible and have now found there are things out there they can get their hands on will look around for other options. My mom's gone from scoffing video games to playing things in the vein of Wii Sports, Big Brain Academy, various Mah-jongg titles and Bejeweled once she found out how to get into them. It'll be doubtful that those gamers will ever migrate heavily into FPS online matches or MMO titles, but you'll see more of them at least try more things gaming, so long as it meshes with their own tastes.

Ampillion, Dayman.

@jun581: Bungie West, to be specific, so who knows who was involved with that and how many of them remained for the development of Halo.

But I don't think that KZ2 will really serve as a killer-app for the PS3, namely because the hype around it seems to be driven by Sony, whereas there was just a natural amount already in place for Halo 2/3 and MS just turned that up to 11. It might be a good game in itself, but it's always going to have KZ1 on it's back as well as the Halo and CoD series which will most likely be still active by then as it doesn't look like any major shooter competition will be coming out by then.

jihadjoe343

I think the biggest story of next year will be the analysts changing their stance on that and realizing that a)hardcores buy far more games and b) casuals become hardcores - expanding an already much larger base.

I think Nintendo played a masterful hand in going after the casual market - very successfully, but I think it's fleeting. The hardcore market didn't go away. Nintendo just tapped an under-marketet segment - kudos to them.

Of course, I may be beating a dead horse argument here.

But realistically, we have to look at who Nintendo are trying to cater with SSBB. Teh Hardzcore? Check. Nintendo whores (like myself)? Check. The casual crowd? Check. But not the brain training soccer moms or grandmas, not the 40 year old parents, not the female gender.

Don't get it wrong, SSBB will probably sell 2 million easily through its shelf-time... but it won't be the best selling game of 2008.

@Smadubaku: Right. It's not so much about the numbers to us as far as the game goes, but seeing just how popular a title ends up becoming. You always have to be interested in how well games are doing, because if they go unsupported, producers will decide to quit supporting them too. And they have the moolah. You might love X title, but if a studio loses their ass on it, don't expect them to jump right into making a sequel or supporting it with DLC.

Ampillion, Dayman.

I think LBP looks interesting but I am in the "I don't think it will be a system seller" camp. I think Drake's Fortune is their best looking game to date and looks like a blast to play and it still isn't the mega hit like Halo 3 or Gears of War was. I think if Sony has to pin their hopes for a mega block buster and follow the market Killzone 2 has to be it.. Like someone said before the Metal Gear series is slowly becoming a niche series due to its declining sales numbers every iteration since Metal Gear Solid 2.

Killzone 2 is the answer Sony folks you better hope its good, because it is a game that even xbox 360 owners talk about.

Leobebes

After that, I don't really give a shit on the exact number, and neither should any of you unless you work for them or own stock.

The most annoying thing about the next gen is people griping/bragging/caring about sales figures. Disgaea 3 is coming (this year, I hope, and damn you Witzbold for having it in 30 days), and I don't care if it sales just one copy, because that one will be the one I play.

kingclip

Yeah, I don't really see a ton of these pulling off 'killer' sales in the long run outside of GTAIV. Saints is arguably just a clone, depending on where it releases in comparison, it's sales may be cannibalized by that release.
Wii Fit may do alright, but I'd be surprised if it made it past a million sales in the US. It's hard to judge if 'healthy' is in charge and popular in the US from the Midwest, cause it sure ain't here.
LittleBigPlanet smells like a Viva Pinata to me. Something ultimately fun that ends up less than stellar sales-wise because of the system it's on and the market that owns it.
Spore will not be another Sims game without some sort of cute factor or interaction quotient. A lot of Sims popularity came from the female side of the market, it was something that even if they weren't gamers they would give it a try (and some had fun with it.) If Spore doesn't have any of that, I think it'll ultimately lose out sales-wise to said Sims.
Metal Gear Solid, while it may have some strong sales, I don't think the series as a whole has ever been as potent as some other franchises, and some of it's followers might have already bought a 360/not bought a PS3 yet.
I would honestly say Smash Brothers could beat almost anything on the list outside of GTA, if it weren't the fact that Wii supplies aren't magically fixed now, so not every person who would buy it already has a Wii.

Anyone have anything to add/disagree? Let's start some good discussion around here for once!

Ampillion, Dayman. Fighter of the Nightman.

I thought the "demo" was going to be on PSN and the best levels from that would make it into the final retail game. Since people are paying for GT5 prologue, it's probably like you said Papa.

As cool as I think the game looks, I don't think it will be the huge hit everyone assumes it will be, but will be much like Ico.

aka Bitter

Um, what??? LBP bigger then MGS4??

Im no playstation fanboy, I don't own a ps3, but Im surrounded by fanboys who swear by this game. Hell, the majority of people I know who have a ps3 only bought it because of MGS4.

And when I ask said people about LBP, theyre like "What the hell is that?"

Ha, hit the nail on the head.

Hmm, this list seems very, very lacking. If I'm not mistaken, they missed Fable 2, Mass Effect 2, GoW 2, HL2:Ep3,Super Smash Brawl, apparently crysis on the 360,RS:V 2,

ahh I refuse to go on. Then again, a few of these are still not confirmed for 2008.

Terrorsaur.

@jihadjoe343: You're not the only one to voice those concerns about MGS4. Sony and Konami are worried it will have too much niche appeal as well - especially considering the cost of the project. (Which is why I guarantee it will go to the 360 in 2009) It should move a few systems, though. Especially in Japan, where the PS3 is finally starting to get a little traction.

Also, Uncharted was surprisingly good. I wouldn't have bought the PS3 for it (did it for the Blu-Ray), but now I'm really glad I got that game. Ratchet & Clank turned out to be a pleasant surprise, but I know I'm preaching to the choir there.

And looking at that fun little list (apparently created by analysts who only know how to ride bandwagons) - I predict Fallout 3 will outsell Spore 2 to 1. Niche appeal again.

Smadubaku

Why is it that of the four or five lists I've seen like these for 2008 so far, that Fable 2 isn't in any of them? I understand this one I guess as RPGs are a smaller market than other genres, but why doesn't it make it to the 'top 25 games of 2008' lists and whatnot. Am I the only one who has any faith that the crazed maniac that is Molyneaux and his faithful team of wood-sprites might actually release a game that can't be completed in 2.5 hours? I have been looking forward to this game since mid 2006 and it seems to have been utterly forgotten. IMHO, the first Fable was a stellar game, it just didn't feel finished, so I regard it as an experiment more than a game. C'mon guys, show some F2 love! (or did they kick it back to 09 and I missed it?)

MasterYong

I can't see LBP or MGS4 being the huge system movers that people keep championing them to be. MGS4 seems to be just too much of a niche game for it to really be the killer app that Gears or Halo were. LBP might do better as it'll have a broader appeal, but with such a relatively small install base, it's not exactly going to rock the sales chart for an extended period of time.

Now I'm not saying they won't be good, and as much as I loathe the PS3, Uncharted didn't look half bad and Warhawk seems like it would be my sort of game. I'm just looking at this from the perspective of someone who isn't a hardcore gamer and might pick up a game every month, if even. Those two games just don't seem to scream "BUY A PS3".

jihadjoe343

Brawl will sell, but not as much as people anticipate. Just take 2007 as an example. Most Wii owners only got the system for Wii Sports. Galaxy is selling well, but not that well in proportion to the number of Wii's out there. I think this trend will continue, but that's just my opinion.

qbix

really? LBP being a huge seller? I think that the casual PS3 player will overlook it for the main reason most casuals overlook other downloadable games... You need to connect to the internet, go through a store online, and buy it. Most of the casuals I know with PS3s just play the single player games all day, and don't even have PSN names...

Lot Krotan

I'm still unsure about LBP. It looks rather... unfulfilling. I like having set goals, and in the past, I've very rarely enjoyed a 2d platformer unless it was made by nintendo or rare.

I'd literally kill to see at least one fantasy/cutesy platformer or adventure on the PS3 that's not a movie spinoff. PLEASE?

Am I clinging so badly to the N64 era? Hell. I loved the first jak and daxter game, but hated (no... DESPISED) the sequels.
