Thanks for the comments everyone and thanks to Mark for posting it. To those mentioning the screenshots, the top is Mario Kart Arcade and the bottom is Mario Kart DS. I know they don't match, but it's the closest screenshots I could find on the interweb.

As far as the buttons getting mashed is concerned my thought was that the buttons would recess into the unit as the top part closed.

It's ergonomically terrible. You would accidentally press those buttons below the left and right controller buttons. Not too mention too thin. Sure it looks nice and all...but not practical. I would put the screen closer together so when you open it up it would look like 1 large screen.

@Dudemeister3: True enough but I suppose if this concept were to become a reality, probably around the same time I would be invited to Narnia for tea with Aslan, it would probably be marketed as a more adult DS for the iPod generation. A multimedia playground for movies, music and games we bought twenty years ago with the cartridge slot doubling to accomodate memory cards.

Uhm, it's only me that see reflections issues while playing with something with such a sleek and lucid surface?

Being realistic something like that looks fine but also needs some revision from the "gaming friendly" side,
as many of the readers said, if this stays in the "handheld" category, then, it should be comfortable to hold for every kind of hand, from the skinny ones (like mine) to the more "thick" ones.

This product in the hands of a at least 90Kg for 1,80cm would not last that much.

Not even talking about hos a "typical" kid under 12 years would threat such a fine piece of industrial design.

P.S. Hey I know there are Kids under 12 years that have more care than me (22) with their PSP, but still, it's not like they're that easy to find k?

Haven't been this excited over a mock up of an unreleaed portable since the PSP was first leaked eons ago... Saying the PSP disapointed may be a bit strong, but it never became the all-in-1 portable device I was hoping it would... not for me anyways.

Eh, built in internet conectivity is the key for devices like these... and I'm not talking Wi-Fi... maybe with the 900mhz allotments getting sorted out we'll have affordable "always on" wireless internet sooner than we think...

I think the DS Lite is crap. The Lite should have either been the release DS, or been skipped over in favor of having 2 models out akin to the Xbox at launch.

If Nintendo came out with this alongside the Lite, offering an ultra thin ultra wide version with slighlt improved hardware and no GBA port, removing the need for emulation hardware/software and requiring data on the OS, in turn meaning whatever chip runs the OS can be smaller, then I'd run out, ignore the current DS Lite and buy this.

The main problems with this idea is that Apple like them easily out of date and even easier to break. Nintendo prefers to make their stuff almost indestructible (by normal means) and last a few years. I do believe that here is another generation of iPod released every four to six months. Not to mention that this design needs a little tweaking. I can't imagine a dang click wheel on the next GameBoy (or DS 2).

Anyways, if it happened, I would get one if it could hold at least 10gigs of songs, videos, etc and play the DS games, preferably some or all backwards compatibility with GameBoy. I wonder whether it would use memory cards and/or unremoveable flash memory, or hard drive memory.

This is stuff of dreams. It'll never happen unless Apple begs, and Apple is too snooty for that.

I realize I'm probably alone here, but am I the only one who misses backward compatability with the original Game Boy? I mean, why the heck not? It's not like it takes up a lot of extra space. Let's admit it. We can love this all we want. But Nintendo being Nintendo will never appease to the hardcore consumers (and electronic-philes) by releasing such high-end hardware that the masses cannot afford. I think after the whole Virtual Boy fiasco, they had some type of epiphany or something. As much as I would love to see something like this happen, it's not going to. I wouldn't be surprised if the next DS something equates to the current generation PSP though in terms of specifications.

@amusedtoe: Actually, it would make contra a bit easier if it was larger and the hinge between the screens was nearly erased, as it is in this model. Ideally, the DS2/whatever will feature some type of flexible thin film display to where when fully opened it will essentially be a single screen, with a video "hinge" rendered for DS1 games like contra to display correctly.

This is a nice model, but the DS2 I'm thinking of will hopefully move in the direction of both power and ergonomics, opting for the 16x9 form factor and 720p resolution w/screen flip because it becomes 1 screen from 2. It will be a bit larger/weigh a smidge more than DSPhat1, but I still expect it to sell crazy. Also, controls/form/handles built for all size hands, ideally, though how you accomplish that I have no idea.

@Scazza: You're totally right. It's true because the GameBoy / DS has always been geared toward durability and yes, mostly younger players, this really could only be a concept model. Much like the concept cars at Auto Shows this thing just isn't practical at all.

Sexy as Charlize Theron and yes, I would Love the DS to have screens that big. I'd also like to have a DS that can be used as a media player (without the R4 chip), and those screens would fit that need quite well. But it's too glossy and breakable for mass production aimed at younger kids and clumsy adults like myself. A compromise somewhere between the current and this is probably the DS2...Just to make sure no one is happy.

Not that I'm against it, I'm just being depressingly realistic. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I find this completely underwhelming. You want widescreen and movies? Get a PSP. Or quit using portables. Perhaps move to the iPhone itself?

It's funny to see that success has come this generation not from the shiniest and best hardware, but from the most affordable with a cool gimmick.

The DS, when it finally sees a real upgrade (2010, perhaps?), needs more power. But it can't do it at the expense of portability (moreover, battery life). Until there's a significant low-power processor (or four) out there, then there's certainly no need to push until the DS itself goes cold. And, with tons of top-tier games on the horizon, it doesn't look to slow down any time soon.

And that widescreen LCD? Sure, it looks great. But between fragility and power consumption, not to mention the awkwardness that comes from lack of symmetry whenever a game wants to use both screens a la Contra 4 or Metroid Pinball, I just don't see it as worthwhile.

Also, the button layout? Too small and cramped. This mock up is merely an iPod touch and a DS mashed up with PSP functionality.

Is that closed clamshell a baby wipes container?

I've dropped mine a bunch of times - once into a pot full of water for about 5 seconds - and the only time it ever broke was when I slipped on some ice riding a bike and landed on top of it. The glass on the LCD screen had cracked, and one $25 screen later it was fixed. It's a US PSP launch unit, and it's still running as good as new.

Completely agreed about the Tonka tough ruggedness of the Nintendo portables. One of the things that prevents me from fully enjoying my PSP, other than handcramps, is the fact that I can't toss it down on the sofa next to me without thinking that I have destroyed it. Any controller for any system needs to be able to handle a little tossing out of frustration. I have a launch day DS that has seen near daily play that has been dropped several times and tossed into the cushion about a hundred times. I like the little custom avatars everyone seems to have. From what i can tell they look like pictures of the players with character overlays on top. However, the Donkey Kong player looks a little too much like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh for my taste. he even looks kinda purple/blue.

I think i'm just being nit-picky here, but teh two screens don't mesh. At least the images being displayed don't mesh. The top has mario in 3rd and rounding a bend, the bottom on the other hand has him on a straightaway and in 6th.

Not bad, but the flatness of the buttons would be annoying. Plus, having tried to play a few emulators on my iPod Touch the thinness of the device makes it very hard to hold. A new DS would need to keep at least to the thickness of the current DS Lite to be comfortable I think. Plus, if it's that thin does it drop the L and R buttons? I'd hope not as I like them! :)

@parad0x360: I haven't played a handheld that's remotely comfortable since the original GBA (and even that had some issues). And there are only two right now, but lots of manufacturers have tried their hand at handhelds in the past (Game Gear, N-Gage, Lynx, etc), and none of them were terribly comfortable.

It just seems to me that Nintendo was taking a step towards making things more comfortable with the original GBA, only to abandon it with the SP. The standard DS is marred with uncomfortable angles and the Lite does little to change this. I just wish they'd go with an ergonomic approach, because, frankly, I don't care what the thing looks like when I'm not playing it. All I care about is what it feels like while I'm playing it, and that everything functions properly. Sadly, I don't think the market agrees with me.

Glossy plastic in areas where you hold thing thing sucks. I hate that about the PSP. It looks awesome until its been touched, then things get all fingerprinty and you have to clean it all the time. The buttons are also too close to the screen, another problem I have with the PSP (a side smudged screen is even less cool than smudgy face buttons). And why so square? Nintendo hasn't released an ergonomic handheld since the GBA.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd take function over form when it comes to handhelds. I'd rather it be comfortable than look good. It seems most handheld manufacturers have been ignoring this for some reason.

Looks nice, but a few problems:

The buttons would smash against the top screen when its closed. Having a recessed topscreen might fix that.

The shape might make it a little awkward to hold, especially with the button placement being right up against the edge like that

The hinge seems to be a bit odd, it might work if it is some sort of "floating" hinge but doesn't look too feasible. Plus the length of it seems to make any "L and R" buttons incredibly small...
