@Witzbold: Highly agree that Kinoko no Yama is wonderful. Gets rather pricey though.

Folks, don't ever confuse Kinoko no Yama with sister product Takenoko no Sato (chocolate covered bamboo shoot shaped butter cookies). The boxes may look alike, but taste is much better with the former.

Koala's March is another highly recommended snack. I much prefer the chestnut flavor over chocolate and strawberry, with some occasional trysts with pineapple flavor.

I like the crunchy Strawberry and Pineapple (just called "Pine") best. Flan is good too. But what is really addicting is Ramune soda candies. Me and my friends love 'em, even my mom does! Japanese sweets FTW!

I discovered Pocky during my first trip to Japan when I was a Junior in High School.

In the decade plus since then the novelty has worn off slightly, but I'll still polish off a box every now and then.

It wasn't until I was actually living in Japan, however, that I saw the "Big Katsu" Bar. That's when I realized that the Japanese has reached a level of excess with their junk food that even a nation as fat as ours hadn't quite gotten to yet. Of course this was before KFC introduced those fried chicken & sides bowls...

I had my first taste earlier this year. I was in an Asian shop buying some Ginger candies I'm already addicted to when I saw the Pocky sitting there. I've heard from others the stuff is good so finally decided to try it out. I had my first bite and thought huh doesn't taste that special. Like a pretzel with chocolate on it. I wanted about a minute and had to have another one then I realized I'd eaten the whole first package and had to hide the second one before anyone else saw what I had. I enjoyed a stick here and there for a week without sharing.

I blame Ultra Game Players & Francesca Reyes for introducing me to Pocky...it was a great recommendation that I remembered for quite some time.

Their word was good. I went from having a friend sell me a box, to thanking Amazon for sending it to my door by packs. Great stuff.

And Crecente, I have to hand it to you.

In 22 years as a native, I can't remember the last time I saw the phrase "finally into Kentucky". That deserves some kind of journalistic award.

So many flavors of pocky...marble pocky is awesome, comes in both chocolate and green tea flavor and the few sticks you get in a pack are always so unsatisfyingly few; the chocolate is almost like chocolate mousse wrapped around a thicker pocky biscuit, which in my opinion is better than the biscuit sticks used in fran. Also the new "Gokuboso" pocky is my new favorite because there's so many in a pack and they're almost kind of crispy. I once had the dream of trying every flavor of pocky and now I know it's impossible. There's the staples, the seasonal, the regional, the limited editions, there's no end...D:

No, but seriously. The Japanese had a "news" show (as in like an hour special or something) dedicated to talk about Korea stealing Japanese candies. Whether they did or it was reversed, I don't know and don't really care too much. All I know is mentioning peppero and pocky in the same thread can start horrible horrible wars.

The only chocolate I can really stand is milk chocolate... any type of dark chocolate leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Hah

I don't like things that are of that type of flavor in any type of food. Hah.

There's this place in Mesa called LeeLee's (I think thats how its spelled) that sells all the stuff thats talked about here, at least the one near me, and more >_> It smells of fish too because of... all the fish.

@Kirbytheslayer: Happy Late Old Year!: Ah thats most likely Yokan. Its just like a harder jelly like substance. Well not really jelly. Hmm its hard to explain since in the US there really isnt something to compair it to.

Its usually sweet though. Made from beans, and served with hot green tea.

@Anemone: Kinda but the chocolate is of higher quality. The cookie stem though is just excellent. Since it blends so well with the chocolate cap. It doesnt interfere with the chocolate flavor, so you can enjoy both the soft consistancy as the chocolate melts in your mouth along with the satisfying crunch of the cookie stem. Well cracker stem might be more fitting since the stem itself isnt sweet.

Dude if you think hes going crazy over Pocky just wait till he gets his hands on "Kinoko No Yama" Mushroom Mountain, its another Japanese candy with like little mushroom shaped chocolates.

The cap part is made of chocolate, and the stem is a crisp cookie. Real good stuff, its my personal fav ever since I was growing up.

That is the way most Japanese food manufactures operate. Pretty much everything is a "limited edition." Every Pocky flavor I can think of (minus the regular and Men's Pocky of course) is only on store shelves for a month or two before space is made for the next "limited edition" flavor. Right now I am really enjoying "Winter Pocky" which has this really fine, powdery chocolate on the outside. Also on sale at the moment is "Dessert Pocky." It is bascially a Pocky meal in a box. The average stick of "Dessert Pocky" is about 3x thicker than your standard Pocky.

It really bothers me that everytime I find something I like over here, it is quickly shown the door for the next product in line. Every fast food joint, every convience store, and every candy manufacterer over here is guilty of this.

I had this Pocky-esque snack over here on Thanksgiving. It was the regular biscuit, and it had peanut butter in the middle. At first it might sound quite repulsive, but it was actually really tasty.

My favorite pocky was Pudding pocky! they had it for a year or so about 4-6 years ago. It was delicious but it must not of sold well in Japan because they stopped making it. It was the best flavor of all of them.

There's another product made by Glico (the same company that makes Pocky) which a chinese supermarket near my flat sells. The name escapes me right now but they're kind of like reverse Pocky, instead of a biscuit stick dipped in chocolate it's a biscuit tube filled with it instead. I actually kind of prefer them to Pocky.

Yeah, Pocky is some good stuff. But next time you are at an asian grocery store, or over here in Japan for that matter, may I recommend stocking up on "Fran" Its a much thicker and tastier version of the "Pocky" concept.
