This is really upsetting to read. I can't imagine what those girls were going through. That boy needs to be thrown in jail...and get his head checked out. However, as a lot of people have stated already, this is another fish in the pond that gives gamers and the idea of interactive gaming a bad name. Something so farfetched as this is rather news-worthy, but I never read any GOOD stories in the mass media albeit gaming related news sites. Now, ignorant parents who read that will automatically assume this type of stuff happens to everyone. Fortunately for me, the man I met while playing Halo 2, who is now my fiance, turned out to be the greatest thing that ever happened to me. Let's see some news reports about that type of stuff.

@L_K_M: Well, that's a good point. I guess I've been guilty of this at some point or another in my younger days on the interwebz.

It's pretty much a matter of assessing the person you're deciding to trust, and in this case, it's quite obvious the girls made a very poor one. Without more specifics (which we will most probably never get), however, it's quite impossible to make a valid argument on either side.

as a former stalkee, i can tell you that the logic process of the stalker is null and void. if he wanted her information, he was going to get it any way he could, whether she put anything on myspace or not. hell, he got her new cell number after her mother had it changed. cell numbers usually don't end up on the internet.

I think Google should have certain things unsearchable such as phone numbers, the only phone numbers you need to look up are on the companies web sites...

I know they can do it, they filter out a bunch of junk, able it their filters aren't the best of filters they could still prevent the looking up of data like taht on the net... or would that mean she posted her information on her my space or something? Why do they put quotation marks around every use of "googled" in the story? Also, to read the story, it doesn't sound like Live had much to do with it outside the initial contact.

I don't think it's a matter of justifying the guy's actions, but rather that the focus is entirely on the guy being the only party involved in what seems to be the summation of a long ... interaction, if you will. Many people here on both sides have been quick to make assumptions and even those who have read the article have not considered the bias of the author.

The point is that the girl is not without any fault. Anyone who believes otherwise is only kidding themselves. Kids these days aren't as stupid and naive as the world would have you believe. She was irresponsible and that's that. That in no way justifies the dude doing what he did, but it also doesn't vindicate her of any fault whatosever.

From the sounds of it, they probably had some kind of meta-relationship before the Line of Creepy was crossed. Most people have been in a situation like this, only a little less extreme. You know, things are going well and then all of a sudden, they're not going so well and next thing you know, things are getting really weird even though you've only known 'em for a short time. It's a common relationship milestone for most people, but this guy is simply wired wrong and he took his weird-level to a dangerous extreme. That's not to say that he's forgiveable, but more to say that people - in general - are just effed up for no reason at all.

people are usually slightly more free with information they think is harmless. like are you afraid to let people know where you are city wise? most people aren't. and most people don't mind if they mention their real name because frankly most people don't have absurdly unique names so it's pretty safe.

if you have someone's real name and location, it's not too hard to get an address. in fact it's frighteningly easy (i found celebrities addresses online)

so i can easily see it turning out like this:

xbox live user name -> myspace account -> real name, city of residence -> zabasearch -> exact address.

Not surprising, to be honest. While I don't blame the girls, they did give out their real names, which the suspect was able to use to google them. Also, the only way their address could be found online is if they posted it somewhere, or they gave their parents names and he used the yellow pages. These girls, while the victims here, need to learn not to give such private information so readily. I'm not attacking them as that wouldn't be fair, but I hope this stands as a lesson. As for the assailant, he should get some serious psychological help.

With all of the obvious socially retarded people on Live, I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would think that giving a person they met on Live their personal info would be a good idea. Yeah she's 15. Maybe i'm wrong but I think I knew better when I was 15. Seriously, does she have downs syndrome or something? Where are her parents?

good that he got caught before he hurt anyone, but I gotta wonder...how did he get their cell #s and home address? Either they told him, put it in a myspace or some other profile.
Those parents should definitely be more watchful of their kid's behaviours online and who they're talking to.

Hope this serves as a wake-up call to that whole family. Could have been much, much worse.
