Been in and out of the C&C world and have been hoping to hit the ground eventually in this world. I was hoping to do so in Battlefield, but "online only" play is utter fail. To be honest, this game, Battlefield, and all the other FPSs with mechs just make me long for a next-gen Mechwarrior/Battletech game. Oh well, until that day, I guess this will do.

mtheumer

Well for those that don't like the color pallet I gotta ask, "Did you play C&C 3?" I'm getting the impression you haven't and thus you are missing why everything looks that way. The backstory behind C&C has been pretty interesting. Tiberium has blighted the earth and has turned some of the richest looking places on Earth, African jungles for example, into deserts. The only places that aren't like that are futuristic cities where the rich people live and so you won't see many battles there. The places where Tiberium is REALLY thriving and everything is green are places that are extremely toxic to foot soldiers so I'm guessing most of the game won't take place there if you're point of view is from a grunt.

Did Westwood paint themselves into a corner with the whole Tiberium idea? Maybe. Or did they conveniently make it so that future games wouldn't need a rich color pallette? Possibly. I'm going to wait and see if the game is fun first.

jp182

@.endejas.:
After reading the article GameInformer had on the game I wouldn't say it is totally like Graw or most tatical shooters or FPS's. While you do get a team and teams to command. You also need slots for the teams. And the number of slots depend on the number Tiberium deposits you control. And from the sound of it teams get bonuses for certain cituatioins. Like if you join with a team they get a leadership bonus or a cover bonus if they are in cover.

Also if you lose a team you can call in a diffrent class or group of team but only if you have a secure drop zone for them to land and a slot for them to reside in. You don't have to go without just because you lost a team.

From the sound of it they are trying to mix Tactical shooter,RTS,and FPS all in one game.

madman83

As for the color schemes..You know you can't just through every color in the rainbow around willy nilly in one frame and get a good sense of design right?

I think what is said about Crysis or even something like Uncharted are good examples of the judicious use of color. Some levels have palettes that progress to other levels. Some are two-tone or monocromatic for a reason, others, warmer saturated tones in contrasting colors.

Another great example is R&C:Future. Multi-colors and good style. Devs are getting there, albeit, slowly, but they are. :)

JohnnyLA

Agreed. It does seem like devs would rather take the easy way out and use a color palette of three or four colors than use a varied, expressive set of colors and visuals. The near-constant use of Unreal Engine 3 might also have something to do with it, as most UE3 games don't exactly seem to vary much in the visual department.

Same here. The only PC games I was into back in the day were UT and Diablo 2 (both of which I played on the family Mac, ironically enough)...everything else was console for me.

I guess for me, though, this game is just critically underwhelming because I don't have any love for the C&C franchise, and squad-based shooters tend to bore me to tears. I don't see that changing with this game and its critically uninteresting art style. Your point on Iraq and parts of the world being drab and boring rings true, but that just serves to prove mine. Why can't developers, y'know, set games in other parts of the world than dusty brown plains or the burnt-out shells of cities?

Archaotic

After Dune II, I had very high hopes for the original Command and Conquer back in the day, and for the most part it delivered. Ever since that first title, the designs for the units and the game world itself just kept going downhill (Red Alert was a bright spot.) The last C&C game had some ridiculous looking soldiers in power armor - a very poor one-off from Games Workshop.

These latest screens look great though, even if only from a design standpoint. Good looking grunts and bots - thumbs up to the concept art.

FightingChance
