I seem to recall reading a retrospective on the Populous games recently in a (British?) gaming magazine. Brought back so many fond memories. First game I ever owned that my parents didn't think was a complete waste of time. Thank God I bought that EGA card.

The nice thing about Populous is that even today you could pick it up and play it, there's no game like it. Beating up half naked guys with your half naked guys and swarms of beeees! Good fun. :-)

Hopefully it's better than the attrocious Gameboy version. The original green-and-dark-green Gameboy had its very own Populous, and he was hopelessly overstrained. Each action in the game had a lag of about half a second, and games would go nowhere because the more you did, the slower the simulation ran. Even so, it was one of my favourite games :-)

Looking forward to this.

The DS is perfect for city simulations because you can take them anywhere. As a micromanager in simulations I want to do it and still have a life.

Personally, the anime style of all these recent remakes of Western games are "meh" at best. Hopefully, the gameplay will make up for it.

Pretty crappy comments post-xmas... anyway, I played Molyneux's masterpiece and probably best game (Populus, if you haven't guessed by now) on my Amiga to death. It was the first time - and few times - I played a video game until 3AM and the first time I played a video game over 6 hours straight. So I welcome this bad daddy and since it's originally a british game, the chances of it being ported for ROW are probably pretty high.

Played the crap out of this on my Genesis back in the day, would love to have another go at it on my DS.. The stylus should help navigate.. maybe tap for left-click and L1-tap for right-click..

@PapaBear434: Nah I had just sent this in last night, or was it 2 nights ago since I noticed they were posting all the Simcity 2 DS stories but none on Populous DS yet.

The only reason why I had found out about Populous DS was while flipping through a famitsu at the store. Real happy about it though since I loved the SNES version.

Glad to see the story out there on Kotaku and that folks are interested!

@SilverStar95: Haha I had this on Sega Master System, the level progression mechanic was ahead of it's time. Some of the map tilesets were pretty crazy too, remember Bitmap?

hmmm. it appears to have either 50+ kinds of levels or 50+ levels, but the page talking about features says that you will receive a different level every time, so I'm not sure what all that is supposed to mean. There are also minigames included (minigames on populous, this'll be interesting) and there is a battle mode of up to 4 people. I'm not sure if it is going to be a download play option or not, but there is a wireless battle option included.

I loved the original populous. I remember playing it on my old PC so very long ago. Never played pop2, but I was a bit disappointed in pop3. The concept of using one single person to cast all the spells rather annoyed me... but man, the original was awesome. I can still hear the music:

@weirdwolf: There's very little up on the site and it being in Japanese makes it a bit of a pain to navigate, but it appears to have 4 person wireless play. Not sure if that means online or just local area, but there is versus!!!

I remember playing this on the SNES when it was first out and all I could think was awesome. Man, that was what 15 or 16 years ago and I still remember how good a game it was.

It looks to me that with SimCity DS, SimCity DS 2 and now this EA wised up a bit. Now if I could only find a way to sneak off with the copy of SimCity DS that my fiancé got my father for Christmas. MUST PLAY!

@EnigmaNemesis: I just hope they keep the original idea behind it.. The reason why I didn't like Populous 3, is because it only had a few levels. The original had thousands of levels to go through, and you would rarely play the same level more than once, because it would advance the number of levels you progress, depending on how well you'd do. Up to a maximum of 20 levels, I think.. Pretty sure that's all I could manage on Genesis(the first level, not the system).

Also, "Water is Fatal" plus enough Mana to flood the map 8 times in a row, for the utter win. :)

Odd bit of trivia, but the original, PC version of Populous had a lot of the code required for the additional level themes seen in the SNES version, but lacked the texture maps for it.(I was a geek who went looking through the files, in text mode.. a lot of gibberish, but a lot of interesting tidbits)

I remember playing that game on an Olivetti M24, with a massive 20MB HDD. I played it every day for 2 years, saving each map just to see how many levels I could get through. As well, each of the passcodes that you would need to enter to play the game(located in the manual) were special, ultra-hard levels, each of which would give you a new title when you beat them.

...Yes, I want this game.

Populous is awesome, yet, I really wish they were remaking the Popu3-style gameplay, instead of Popu1 or Popu2-style. Still, this could make for one addicting game, and I could possibly get my dad into it. He's played Populous for a long time, got Populous 3 when it first came out and still plays it to this day.

This could be interesting.
