Yeah I'm a little dismayed about no bomberman as that game is an effing hoot with 4 people around the house. But in the end it would have been either bomberman or undertow for me so the survey makes it easy. The only thing undertow lacks is local multiplayer without linking multiple consoles. Undertow even has a semi-decent storyline for an xbla game. Even though Catan isn't up there it's been mentioned alot by previous posters, but I can never grasp the attraction of the game. Maybe it's because my friends wonder why we even bother playing a board game on the 360FPSFPS SHOOTSHOOTEMUPRROD console. Yeah.

Wow...So much bitching. Remember that these games were chosen by the Kotaku editors, they can't please everyone and they are supposed to reflect their games of the year. The "Reader's Choice" part comes in because they wanted us to decide which was the best game out of their selection. It's better than other games sites that simply announce their GOTY list as the be-all and end-all, with no input from the readers. Have a bit more respect and vote for the one you liked best out of these three games.

Anyway, it has been some year for Live Arcade, I think it's really come into its own as a service.

I wish I had an edit button, the reason I'm really pissed about these GOTY selections is that I actually wanted to know what people here honestly thought was the best game for each prospect. Honestly three choices for any of the platforms is nowhere near a broad enough selection, especially PC. This 'community vote' also immediatly cancels out the chance of a surprise winner. The best game I played this year was a independent game called 'Aquaria' that I found downright astounding, Bioshock was a aclose second on PC, Team Fortress 2 for pc is third, I can't vote for my top three games of the year, give us a variety of options. let us vote on obscure titles! Calling this a user awarded decision is a downright lie when I vote based on process of elimination for game of the year. Kotaku is usually more commmunity driven than other sites, when ign and gamespot offer me more selection in voting than my favorite independent blog I get a little upset.

Do you polldiots really believe that a SUCCESSOR to PAC-MAN would have been pulled off without XBLA? There's never been anything worth considering as an "evolution" for the original Pac-Man until Championship Edition. There aren't enough competitive arcades left in North America to make it happen. Microsoft is flying that flag now, take it or leave it. Personally I think they're kicking ass and taking names.

And C.E. is certainly worthy of a GOTY nod.

Not voting on this either. I've actually spent more time playing Carcassonne more than any other arcade game since they gave it away free this year.

Every Extended Extra Extreme shouldn't even be on this list it is so broken. Go look at the Xbox forums and read up on this game. My score is so high (because anyone can get any score they want if they sit there long enough) that it messes up the formatting of the dashboard when I pull up this game.

Alien Hominid was OK when I played it on the Gamecube, but I'd take any Metal Slug game over it anyday (I think I still have the Xbox MS3 somewhere, but it's not on the BC list.)

Cool thanks a bunch ... I thought it was Live right away, but I kept restarting the Xbox and it came up with the picture fine but minor fuzzy pixel artifacts surrounding the blades and such ... so it made me nervous (thank goodness it is fine and was just a fluke anomaly) ... ran error code test and nothing ... then went to the website (after it finally loaded) and saw it was for a lot of people.

XBL has been very spotty for me the last couple of days, including today. I don't get error messages or anything either, it just either drops me or takes forever to do anything (like isn't able to show my friends' gamertags as gold, their achievements, or to load icons and the like in the stores).

There are only three options:
Switchball
Pac-Man C.E.
Space Giraffe.

Every Extend Extra Extreme is barely a game. You can "play" forever. Alien Hominid is ok if you're into that sort of thing but not GOTY material. Undertow has very high production values and good gameplay too, but it definitely pales next to the three originals listed above.

If, however, you were going for a "middle of the road game of the year" you hit the spot I guess.

Every Extended Extra Extreme for me. I wasn't expecting a lot after being disappointed with the PSP game, but WOW did they turn it around. Very addictive game. I admit to not picking it up in a while though thanks to actually having some retail games to play instead.

Thanks for the heads up... and lets hop it is Live having issues (which I think it is due to the site being chuggy as well) ... the only reason I will get it, is due to my wife playing the heck out of it (just picked it up for $15 new at Target for DS the other day), so I could buy the 360 version to not wait in line to play ... lol!

Was gonna get the PSP version, but I thought the touchpad would be better, even though it s just novelty in that game.

Not voting. Poor choices to choose among, I played the demos for all three and they had a half-life of about five minutes.

I've bought 20+ XBLA games this year that are better than any of this three.

As for addictiveness I'd go with PuzzleQuest. For pure fun, probably Pac-Man CE (and who'd a thunk that, when the initial reaction was "Another Pac-Man?!"). For filling a much needed niche, and doing it fairly nicely, I'd vote for Arkadian Warriors. Not to mention the VERY welcome arrival of two board games in Catan and Carcasonne.

i refuse to vote for any of the games in the poll. alien hominid's controls never really felt right, E4 was hardly a game, and undertow was way overhyped.

@EnigmaNemesis: I got PuzzQuest on XBLA a month ago, having beating the game with a wizard on my DS last spring. I started a new game with a Knight, and got her to lvl 50 just yesterday, and I haven't even beaten the game yet. Ever since I got Death Gaze, I haven't lost an online match yet.

Is the game worth playing a second time? Meh. Depends on how much free time you have. When you start skipping through the story dialogue because you've read it all before, the game starts feeling a lot more like a huge grind / time-sink. It's still a quality game though, and it was nice to play with a different character class and play a few online matches.

The creator said in an interview that he "always wanted to play a rogue," insinuating that DLC was a possibility, but at this point, I don't think I could stomach a third play-through. I look forward to new puzzle/RPG hybrids in the future.

Pac-Man CE would be my choice. It was the only XBLA game that I was semi-addicted to. The rest of my XBLA purchases, I played through to try to max out the achievements but then never went back to (such as SOTN). I also was over PQ after the many hours spent on the DS version, didn't feel like picking it up on XBLA.

I didn't care for E4, and Undertow didn't do it for me either.

Ironic how there is no Puzzle Quest there, but ended up on both hand-helds ... personally think it is better on the 360 than E4 or Undertow.

Also thought Worms or Pac Man CE should have been there! Even Boom Boom Rocket was more fun to me than E4. Carcassonne is also held in high regard as well.

But that is the beauty of Opinions!

Man the 360 even has a load on the Live games as well ... and that isnt counting remakes. No-one can argue the awesome year, when it is really put into perspective, wow!
