There, now that everyone on this fine sight has collectively yanked their heads from out of their asses, open your freaking eyes people!!! If you do not think that this game looks amazing and is animated incredibly...your blind, stupid and spoiled! It is the absolute slickest SF I have ever laid my eyes upon. And for of you who are saying "The game play looked solid, but the facial expressions/animations were horrible." Holy crap-nuggets, they were DEAD ON!!! Grow up fan-boys, and I emphasize B-O-Y-S!!

alienindahizouse

I really can't say much about the Characters graphics yet (they still making progress). I can say the 3D background is nice. The speed is a little more faster than EX. Somehow I believe Naruto Clash of the Ninja Graphics (2D characters with 3D backgrounds except the shadowing) seems better, but like I said previously we have to wait and see.

There is something that I just hope is in the game:

*All characters from all Street fighter games(No Exceptions)(No matter if that character die in the series like M.Bison or Barlog whatever you guys call it,Charlie,Gen,etc. They should be there too)

*All Powerbars and effects created from all Street fighting games including the capcom vs snk 2 bars

*Parry must be in the game, and if possible Just Defending...

Video

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I'm totally digging these videos. How much of a SF game can it be if it's so detached from the original SF2 formula that made it so great? I think they know exactly what they're doing. Keeping it real for the SF2 fans (that still exist) and coming up with new fans with a modernized look that's not anime (go get Guilty Gear for that). I think it's totally raw, which is the feeling that I got when I watched the teaser video. About fighting like brush strokes. Fast and intense.

Ryu was never a pretty boy. Even tho I somewhat agree that he looks South American, I think they got the hulk-like factor right. And with the emotive expressions for hits and misses, it's downright awesome. The videos are certainly bringing out the SF2 fan that's been dormant in me.

iconsam

@king_e_dawg: Damn, I know there were tons of crappy ones on Famicom and such, but where is a kick-ass Fist of The North Star game now? That movie is part of the reason I still have no respect for DBZ, because Fist of The North Star>DBZ in every damn way.

Yeah, I actually have 2 SF2 SNES cartridges, and the design of the characters is actually not bad as being an evolution of that. People just got used to what Ken and Ryu look like in Alpha/SF3, is the main problem. For me those games might might as well have never existed, so I have no problem with that aspect of this new game.

DaiMacculate

Hmm, you know what, my original fears that it would look awkward in motion have been cleared. I mean, after the stylization and motion in the 2D fighting animations, especially after 3rd Strike, I thought that 3D would come off really clunky. I think it could use some refinement, but over all the movements feel exactly like those of their 2D counterparts in 3D. It feels a bit slower, but I think that's the visual impact of losing the 'blur' frames in 2D. The weight and speed is about right for Ryu and Ken - I'd like to see how they work the speed for characters like Chun Li or slower fighters, and if it maintains that visual balance.

I'm uncertain about the faces - I'll need to see other character models in motion before I can make a call on that. I think it's an admirable attempt to balance the 2D stylization in 3D without making it overly cartoony or overly realistic (and losing the flavour of SF).

Also, the colour palette is bloody fantastic.

epherlite

I'm not a big fan of the art style... The character models have a very "rubbery" feel to me. They look like more defined characters from the Toy Story universe...

I'd rather them work with sprites than do a shotty job (IMO) of converting them to 3d. Character design is half the battle.... the other half is lighting, shading and rendering!

As for the gameplay--it looks faithful to the classics with a good amount of modern polish! My gripes with the art style aside, it looks like it will be lots of fun to play!

asphix20

This looks frickin' amazing and I dig the cinematic supers. I'm going to go the opposite extreme and claim instant love.

I dunno why people are complaining about the gameplay. From what it looks like, it's lightning fast and looks like it has potential for some serious strategy. SF has never been about the same style that its 3D cousins have tried to perfect. The game is a 2D brawler with 3D graphics.

dunetiger reads kotaku, seems pleased

Whether it is Capcom's goal to make Street Fighter IV lifelike or not doesn't really matter. I'm just dumbfounded with Capcom's decision to take a backseat while all other developers have pushed for more visual realism. I'm not talking about the mechanics of the game, its game-play, just its presentation.

@ARA,

What I spoke of when speaking about lifelike imagery had nothing to do with a green skinned Brazilian outcast, an Indian contortionist pyro, a Spanish matador with a bit too much narcissism, a Chinese police officer with thighs the size of Michael Clark Duncan's trunk or a Japanese martial artist with the power to channel flaming fists at his aggressor. I speak of the game's appearance. The game looks…dirty. Grainy. That's all I'm saying. If you don't agree with me on that, that's fine. Move along.

I'm not going to change your mind and you're not going to change mine.

Aside from its pretty impressive opening movie, this game is graphically unappealing as a Next Gen fighter.

American_N_Japan

When they said Daigo was doing the art for this game, they did mean Daigo Ikeno right? I'm having a difficult time imagining how his artwork could have inspired those character models. At the present, I'm not a fan of that aspect of the game.

I'll admit that the relatively brief snippets that we've seen thus far do look both fast and fun, but I'm not ready to drop the EX 4 moniker yet. Is that necessarily a bad thing? I suppose not. But it's a far cry from the Street Fighter IV of my dreams. Of course, final judgment is reserved until I can actually pick up the controller for myself.

Just as a precautionary move, release 3rd Strike to XBLA/PSN shortly before the release of SFIV. Hell, if the price is right, I'm not even sure that improving the visuals would be necessary. 3rd Strike is definitely one game in which I wouldn't mind getting my ass handed to me over XBLA.

Intellectualdiot

Hit effects and explosions(?) are rather large, hiding much of the action within them. Animations, well, they need to be sharp for that kind of a gameplay, no time for smooth transitions, not bad but nothing to brag about either. As I was always much more of an SNK man, can't say I'm overly thrilled about the game itself, but I certainly am a fan of the art direction.

People need to stop bitching about the look. It's a back-to-basics design; it's different, it's creative, it's making the old new again (Contra 4, anyone?). According to 1up, the game is only about as finished as what you're seeing here, which is hardly. And even if it does end up looking just like this, everybody's just going to keep complaining that it should retain the 2D anime look because anime is better than everything ever, including sex with real girls.

ANIME IS DEAD, SUCKERS. There's not going to be another Ninja Scroll, there's not going to be another Akira or Ghost in the Shell. And there's not going to be another SFIII or Alpha game. Just regurgitated pastel crap like Eureka Seven. We've moved on, Capcom is moving on, and if Ono is the only one who's not going to up and abandon the franchise, he's got my blessing.

king_e_dawg

Although I have been one of Capcom's dear fans because of the Street fighter series, I always must keep in mind that this is a work in progress. The final product will probrably be 100 times better than this. It is still in its early stages, what I can tell are the facial expressions (it's been mentioned 100x) and the animation. I was hoping for a more fluid movement in terms of clothing... And Ken and Ryu should be much taller, unless the video quality makes them look like dwarves.

Capcom shouldn't forget to add the obstacles that are the end of both sides of some stages in SF2 to put in SF4 (like the crate's in guile's stage and bison's buddah statues).

The canceling moves look great, and the finishers look somewhat cheesy and would eventually bore gamers . All in all, good job Capcom. Now some Chun Li footage please.

loligasm

I think too many people here are being overly critical.

Honestly, I have to say that I haven't seen a Street Fighter game run that fast ever. In fact, I think it is safe to say that there will be no more frame counting and such tomfoolery at those speeds. Also, I like the art style because it reminds me of Shinkiro's. The characters look lively and animated, but they also give off that "serious-3D-character" vibe those ultra-detailed 3D fighters like VF5 or DOA4 have.

I admit it is strange to see their mouths actually move like that (Ryu-Ken Stomach Punch!) after playing something like Soul Calibur, but then other 3D fighters didn't have the most impressive ways for expressions (I especially hated watching taunts in the VS screen when Soul Calibur loaded because the way they spoke looked so unnatural). For a semi-3D or "2D" fighting game, I think Street Fighter 4 looks damn nice.

lker

I've said it before, It's going to be really hard for people to accept this game as a pseudo-3D graphics/game without the Cell shading, regardless how good it plays. Video was definitely disappointing, The Fanboys/Capcom are definitely blind if they think this is a step FWD in the series. I'm curious to find out if they are going to Nail the SF trademark controls, hopefully the gameplay wont feel "Floaty". Maybe my expectation are high for this game, but maybe they should be. Everything on these vid-clips has been done before, by SNK at that, on the PS2. I'm expecting a 2-D masterpiece not a SF-EX clone, SSF2T-HD-Remix is looking better by the second.

SpuddOner

Ignoring the complaints about the facial animations, here are the new gameplay mechanics I noticed in the footage. First it seems like there's some sort of charged/channeling move which Ryu performs multiple times in the second clip. Maybe that helps increase the Super Meter (similar to old school King of Fighters games).

I also noticed that Ken was able cancel right out of his Shoryuken after the first hit. It wasn't a cancel into a Super Move like in the old games. It was practically a dead stop of the move. That seems like it will open up a lot of mind games and strategic options.

I also noticed that the Parrying system from SFIII isn't in this game. It could still be in it (which I hope it is). Also before a Super Move is performed, it looks like a splash of that black ink, from the original teaser trailer, appears on the screen.

Overall I'm impressed with what I see. They might need to do some work on the facial animations though. That look on Ryu's face before he unleashes that charged up Hadouken doesn't look like him at all. The jumping animations look a little off as well, but the other animations for the moves are pretty good. Also performing the combos has a familiar look to them. I think they should up the speed a little more though. It looks a little too slow for my tastes (though that's just a personal opinion).

Phlycheez

And there are many more in the second video.

From what I've seen so far, this has potential to be good. It looks like it controls well. We'll see how those angular shifts affect gameplay later, and how the supers will work.

But so far, looks alright. The "physics" don't feel to floaty, and at least visually the weight feels ok, which used to be a problem with capcom on their 3d games, characters that would scale 2 or 3 screens, in a 3d game. Personally, I think that works ok with 2d, but in 3d you have to consider weight a bit more than that.

xybur

Since the beginning. Over-the-top expression. The style mirrors the cartoon-like feel of 2D while not going to the awful cell-shading. Looks very crisp.

CAPCOM gave us Project Justice. That game made me never doubt CAPCOM's ability to give their fans a quality 3D experience that not only had great characters, but FUN gameplay that still had the feel of a traditional 2D fighter. AKIRA developed the EX series, so I'm not going to compare that with CAPCOM's current efforts on SF4.

I'm still a bit skeptical about the route SF4's developers have decided to take the series after such a long absence, but it's still early to determine anything from just a few shots of gameplay footage. Lets wait and see.

KeroseneClimax

This game is going to be good. The animation looks really good and I think they're going to be refining that much more over time. I love how fast it moves. Watching this game in motion feels like a painting I've seen for years coming to life. I love the art style and I think it might look even better with some of the smoke effects from the teaser being incorporated during super moves but it still looks good. I love the fact that they are staying true to the form. I'm also looking forward to find out more about the save system.

The gameplay looks like it's good, but the problem with gameplay is that it can't really be judged until the game is actually played. It looks "fast" though, like it was commonly described, and I hope it feels fast too.

My only real gripe is that the character models seem off. I think the major issue is that Ken and Ryu's eyes look vacant and painted on. It's going to be a very ugly thing if ryu, ken, and any other fighters in the game can only stare directly in front of their face.

However, this is a work in progress, and I am confident that the end result will have the most serious of graphical and gameplay kinks worked out before we can pay to play it.

I still, however, haven't forgiven Capcom for taking out those create-a-fighter modes from the US releases of Rival Schools and Project Justice.

tsbaron

Virtua Fighter is still my fighting game of choice; and I am more excited about the HD SF2 than this weird Hobbit-esque redesign. Early days though, so I too will reserve judgement... and again, I just hope he doesn't mess it up like he did the 4th Onimusha.

Bentles

Ok, now note that I'm not complaining, because I'm happy to have these links, but why don't the video embeds from Gamevideos.com ever work? I mean, as a Mac user I'm totally used to having problems with random crappy media formats online, but the two different Windows PCs (one XP, one Vista Home Prem) I use on a regular basis and view Kotaku with can't watch them either. Its not that big a deal to follow the link back and just download the .mov of it, but it just seems like it almost defeats the purpose (for Gamevideos), they should have an option to just embed a graphical link to the download interface, maybe that would work better?
Also, the Gametrailers.com links and Youtube/etc work great, its just this site. They seem to have good content, so its just too bad they aren't as convenient.

As to this, I'm starting to have some hope this might not suck, though I remain skeptical. I'm not as big a fan of the Alpha games, I'd rather play either SF2/variants or Third Strike, and this game looks a bit like Alpha so far (its early of course). Also those black bursts (which are probably just video effects added after it was recorded) are really annoying more than anything else. Finally, I find the black outlines around the fighters distracting.

So yeah, I remain skeptical ;)

DaiMacculate

Videos must work, but the 1up show usually goes up in the realm of 300+ MB per show so that is why maybe we cannot see it. I could be wrong but hey... i could also be wrong. In any case, a click on the player will get you to the gamevideos site where you could download other versions of it as well.

whiskey

Thanks for the youtube link! (gamevideos sucks major ass seriously). The gameplay doesn't look as bad as some made it out to be.
