I remember the first Christmas the DS was available, my best friend got one and didn't touch it. Never bought a game, barely even looked at it. He had the metroid demo, and that's it. I kept telling him how awesome the DS was, he kept saying it sucked and the PSP would destroy it. 4 years later, this happens, and I am still getting hours of enjoyment out of the DS. I love Nintendo.

This may be true, but its also largely irrelevant.

If the dual screen gets developers and consumers attention then it achieves its goal whether or not it makes a substantial difference to the game play. That being said, it often DOES make a substantial difference to the gameplay. Having a touchscreen actually makes having 2 screen an imperative. With games like brain age and sudoku and the like, its vital to have a screen to write on that is not the same screen as what you read on. Sure, you COULD do it on a single screen but it wouldn't be nearly as slick as with two. Considering that games like brain age are among the top sellers on the console, I would say that shows the importance of 2 screens and games that take advantage of them. Also, one of the niceties of the Dual Screen and a thing that is partially responsible for its success in the market is its intuitive and simple nature. Most traditional games have map and/or inventory screens or some subscreen that is pretty important. Switching back and forth between these screens is a no-brainer for gamers, but for the demographics the DS is shooting for, having that second screen is important because it eliminates the need for another button and puts information immediately at your finger tips. This may not seem like much but it makes games even simpler and allows the broadening of the demographic.
Both of which seem to be working well for the DS.

@Setech: Actually.... I still haven't seen a game that couldn't have been done just as well on a one screen portable. I'd place more of its success on the Stylus and the options that give than on the double screen.

Same with PS2 it was a very unreliable console. I knew many people on their 2nd-5th consoles. Then with the PS2 slim out some people were replacing old PS2s which worked fine.
I think PS2 owes it's success due to these: piracy, replacements, spread of word, party games, largest library of games.

I can't find solid stats for the famicom but according to Nintendos own site, the Super famicom sold 49 million globally, with "over 20 million in the US". That leaves 29 for the rest of the world. Assuming Europe bought only 10 million, that still leaves less than 20 million in Japan. Do you have some sources that show the Super Famicom sold more than 20 million units in Japan? I would be curious to see them. As for the Famicom, like I said, I can't find any stats for Japan, but still if its was being sold for 20 years, this is hardly comparable to the DS being on the market for only 3.

As another poster said, consoles have typically outsold handhelds, so for the DS to do this, particularly in the face of impressive competition from the PSP where no such competition existed before is more notable than a console outselling the PS2.

It's like cell phones over taking home entertainment systems. Right now theres 4 cell phones in my home. Ive gone through at least 8 cell phones since my first, My wife has had 10 since her first phone.

The DS is a personal device, its meant to be used 1 per person. The PS2 (and any console) is meant to be 1 per family.

I'm wondering though - Are they still planning on making Gameboys? Or is the DS really the Gameboy, and Ninty only said that the DS was just an experiment (incase the DS failed)?

For the next DS version, they should really think about intergrating a phone IMO. I know you could probably just use the DS as a speakerphone... but what they should do is make a NEAT earpiece that is unlose-able BUT small enough so it can "clip" onto the back of the DS (like the stylus)

Also, make the stylus have a built in mic! (haha)

The only problem - battery life.

Nope. I've had mine since *googles kingdom hearts release* 2002, just a year after yours and mine still works.

Regarding the DS, I don't really like the game selection. The only games I've liked are Pokemon Diamond and Elite Beat Agents. But even though it's not my favorite system to play with it still makes me happy to see video games doing so well.

The idea that a handheld would naturally outsell a console totally boggles my mind. Up until the DS, handhelds were a smaller market! If handhelds were such great sellers, the DS would be aiming for GBA records, not PS2 records. They may be cheaper, but until now, handhelds have been far less desirable products. Add to that the fact that the DS actually has the PSP as competition while the GBA was pretty much unopposed and I think this is a much bigger achievement than another console outselling the PS2. The DS changed the way people look at handhelds and is the first portable system to challenge sales of home consoles. Maybe I'm crazy, but to me the fact that it's a handheld makes it more amazing, not less impressive.

The PS2 is the top selling system in history worldwide at around 120 million units, but not in Japan.

I do believe the original GameBoy also sold more than 20 million units in Japan over its lifetime; or at least, I would be quite surprised if it didn't.

If its a forgone conclusion that a hand held should surpass PS2 numbers in such a short time, simply because 4 people per household buy them, why hasn't the PSP surpassed the PS2 sales in Japan? I mean isn't that the same thing?

Also, I think the reason people are making a big deal about this is because at 20 million units shifted, the PS2 was previously the best selling gaming device in Japan. I could be wrong though.

The DS could do even better if Nintendo really pushed games the way that Sony did with the PS2.

I suggest a few simple things...

Mario 64 II (sequel with the same engine)
Chrono Trigger (remade by Level 5)
Super Mario RPG (remade by Square/Enix)
Metroid Dread (please Retro?)

I would have more, but they're already doing remakes of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Fire Emblem.

Which will all only add fuel to this ungodly fire.

But what about all the damn PS2's that broke. I don't know a single person who hasn't had to get at least 1 replacement PS2. I doubt Japan faired any better in that respect. The DS selling more than the PS2 in half the amount of time? Pretty crazy.

To be fair the PS2 is a home console. Most households will probably only buy one in its entire lifetime, while the DS requires multiple purchase if everyone in the family wanted in on it.

Any system selling that many units in the amount of time it has is very impressive. But it is Japan.

I mean, they dont like the 360, which is a great system. They rather buy crappy games like gundam then ratchet and uncharted.
it is a handheld, and not a console. The PS2 was waay more expensive. I'm sure if the PS2 was the same price as the DS it would have reached the same number even faster.

But, great non the less. Nintendo should be proud.

Once the FFIV remake comes out in English though, add +1 more DS lite sale from me!

Game Boy/pocket/Light/Color came to a total of 118.69 million units worldwide.
Game Boy Advance/SP/micro is currently at a total of 80.48 million units worldwide.

PS2 has surpassed those two groups of handhelds.

It doesn't matter that this is handheld vs. console. Any gaming device selling this many units in such a short period is impressive. Comparing the sales to LTD sales of the most popular console ever is just a way to put it in prespective.

That sounds pretty logical, actually. Consoles require a TV, which most houses only have two or so of. A DS? Small, cheap, doesn't require a TV set...

I hate to point this out, but it makes sense in one key way.

A singular household with four people in Japan will have one or two Ps2s, tops. They don't need any more.

With the DS, a household with four people will have just that, four DSes.

Of course it's going to outsell the Ps2.
