Pretty much the same story for me in England - 'you must have a current connection or system link to play games' or 'cannot connect to session' messages while playing CoD4, and then i have the usual logging off/logging on/friends not being displayed etc things.

but i still don't mind paying for Live, especially as it operates fantastically for 90% of the time.

Well, I'm in Brazil using the north american Live service and I'm having some of these issues since the problems on Dec. 22: difficulties on connection (gotta try 2 or three times before connecting), disconnection during matchmaking on Halo 3 and other games and disconnection when you simply change the game. And that's been happening with many other brazilian Live users and some north american friends too. So, it's not and isolated case and it's not relevant to my IP or region.

It's quite unfortunate that it's happening right now that I just renewed my Live Gold service for another 13 months...

@Witzbold: Nooo, standing up is bad. Doesn't let the ventilation on the bottom breathe, and it's also strain on the DVD motor (minor, but it still has to work harder vertically). I have mine on the side with about 6" on all sides of it, ne'er a problem.

@topic: This has been going on since almost a week before christmas, it's quite annoying. The fact that I could look up my WXYZ codes and have the entire first page on google filled with people wondering what's up says it's a pretty widespread issue too. Just glad I don't pay for the service.

Question though on that subject...if I wanted to play a game like Crackdown with a friend online, do we have to have Gold? There's no real 'matchmaking' there, I already know his gamertag and can see when he's playing...will it allow the two of us to connect without gold accounts?

Most of the time it would not finish signing in to XBox Live, the circle of circles just kept going round and round forerver. I could only find 3 games of Gears tonight, so I played AC and watched Gladiator instead.

It seems as if MS buys as few servers as possible until XBL reaches it's limit, then they fix the server stability for the current problem, but don't take another step to improve the stability for the next wave of users.

Does anyone know what dates XBL went down this year? (besides normal service)

Seems like it happens during xmas break, beginning of summer, and during the spring/fall updates.

Hmm, it's a good thing I didn't buy a 360 for Christmas like I had planned. If this is how I would be introduced to online gaming, I would have been pissed. You're having problems with the blades because they're trying to access live. I got sick of disconnections from CoD4, so I went to play overlord, and the framerate was stuttering, and I kept getting "sign off/on" signs all over the place, and finally it kept displaying the "please reconnect controller" thing all over for about 10 minutes. I unplugged my ethernet cable and everything was fine again.

I just got done playing 3 hours of CoD4 online, and it worked great. I went from 1-19 on prestige mode 1 :)

@Scazza: Actually, I'm a PsN user, and that sort of stuff is pretty common. So I guess, right now, PsN is the better deal.

But if they resolve those problems on the 360 again, then Live is slightly superior once more, and it comes down to price choices.

Yeah, I've been having problems too. I don't know if it's just me or are the blades not loading for anybody else? Tried playing a demo after logging in, but the damn UI wouldn't load. I had to log out to make it work.

Most of the problems I am noticing are games doing random shit. Trying to connect to servers sometimes locking up the system, sometimes partying causes some weird shit...

*cue the anti-50 dollars a year, PSN is superior* crowd...

This isn't just Canada.
I'm in Mexico. I played for 4 hours with friends today and never managed to make it past 3 games in a row without being disconnected. At times, it even completely crashed my router. >_>

Before this trouble began a week ago, gaming was nice and smooth...
