Ok, I have to be honest based on what I just saw. I don't like it. I like some of the presentation but I still don't like the look of the game. This is my initial reaction after watching the footage. Dan Hsu made a good point but he used Soul Caliber in his example(which is just strange to me) He said after playing Soul Caliber he thought it was a better game than Street Fighter and couldn't go back. Really? No shit? A top tier 3D fighter vs a 2D fighter that had already been released and re-released a number to times by the time Soul Caliber saw the light of day?

From that perspective, VF2 is better than Street Fighter2. VF3 is better than Street Fighter2. I say, Street Fighter 2 was in trouble when Samurai Showdown 2 came out. That game made me stop playing Street Fighter2. Samurai Showdown 1 was good but the sequel really proved that SNK was not only serious but could make a 2D fighter that was better than Street fighter.

Anyways, Street Fighter IV has good animation, I like the smoothness and the anticipation. I don't like the art direction. I STILL can't figure out why too many japanese designers don't make their characters look japanese. Ryu doesn't look Jpaanese at all. Is there some self loathing there? Chances are, I may pass on this unless the art direction gets better and a bit more depth is added to what was already discussed. It's still early so we'll see. Hey, if all else fails, there's still smash bros.

I always have trouble with gamevideos.com video footage. It runs, but like a blind, one-legged dog after a bowl of whisky. Doesn't do the game any favours at all when I only see 2 FPS.
Furthermore, I got a little bored of trying to keep up with the Street Fighter franchise way before SF3 came along... Virtua Fighter, now that's a man's fighting game. SF just doesn't excite me any more, especially when it comes from the guy who broke the Onimusha franchise, and all the characters look like elongated hobbits. What's with that giant-footed design? It's a might strange, I say.

Apparently, there are those who are anxious to see just the gameplay, as there has already been talk coverage on the title in & of itselt for the past few weeks. Not everyone feels like sitting through twenty mintues of gibber-gabber.

As far as the gameplay goes, sure some may find it questionable (I think it looks alright) but I think fanboys' hearts will begin to warm up to it once they see oldschool favorites Guile, Dhalsimm, and Chun Li in action. Give it some time.

This looks like Street Fighter. But that's pretty much all it looks like at this point....a rather regular, unremarkable 3D iteration of Street Fighter. It doesn't look BAD per say, but it doesn't scream of "A long awaited sequel!!! OMG!!" I guess it's not fair to judge yet. I need to hear the music, see the HUD, take in the details. Right now it's just "nice." I'm not as erect as Ryu in those initial screen shots over it.

Yea, I didn't notice until you mentioned that Ryu had Blue eyes here(?!)... Kinda confusing, as I've never seen him that way-- altering defining charactrer traits like that.

The characters are kinda stiff as well... but this seems to be because the game isn't really near completion at all...

I am digging all the gameplay stuff so far, I believe in the developers with that aspect-- looks like it'll play just fine. But with Ryu and Ken looking like early-80's G.I.JOES, I don't know if that'll stick too well.

Just because "Capcom" develops doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be better than the EX series, or even good at all. Personally, I like the look of it... and that's coming from an avowed Street Fighter detractor. I hate Ryu and Ken with a passion that can scarcely be defined, but the aesthetic of this is different enough to make me not mind that I'm watching two of the most generic characters ever created.

If it plays well and has a decent roster (ie. as little of SF2/SFA as possible), this may actually get some of my hard-earned money.

@fallingdove: What? Ryu and Ken look pretty much exactly like they always have. The only changes to their designs are the little logos or whatever on their gloves. The character designer has been working on the series for a while and was also in charge of SFIII, so he knows what he's doing.

All in all, the gameplay looks pretty good. The graphics kinda throw me a bit, there's something about the shading that really keeps the models from looking 2D-ish, even though it's clear that's what they were trying for. The facial expressions are a bit overexagerrated. But, it looks pretty cool, all in all.

I'm pleased with how the fighting engine transitioned from 2D to 3D this time. They kept the fluidity and traditional style of the old school fighting genre intact, as they should have.

Hmm..... that looks a lot better than I expected. The movement of the characters is really nice though it seems to feel so restricted. But I'm only a casual player of fighting games so it's hard to judge.

Anyhow this looks promising. With some improvements this could be pretty good. It's still lame that it's a prequel to SF3 though.

@fallingdove: I have to agree with you on that. I think that a better model to look at should've been Street Figther Alpha 2. The faces do look huge and overly pissed off -- Hell, Ryu and Ken looked pissed off, but still controlled -- on this game they look like they're about to flip out any second and go nuts. not a fan of it.

The only game that's taken the best transition from 2d to 3d has been King of Fighters. I wish the devs would make a poll and see what direction people want to go with graphics =\

this looks awesome! i'm a huge fan of sf2 and loved the fact that they remained true to the series yet added enough to make it a brand new game when they went to sf3 and this looks to be doing the same. new gameplay, classic and new characters, updated visuals, and because its a streetfighter, rock solid 2d fighting (even if the characters are 3d). between this an kof12 it looks to be a good time to be a fighting fan.
only downside, none of the portable systems out right now can play a good fighter. i've tried kof2003, darkstalkers, sfa3, and garou on my psp and the d-pad just can't cut it.

Complete and utter garbage.

So far this game makes me want to cry. The transition animation sucks. The game looks floaty. But the worst part of all are the character designs. Ryu has blue eyes? Ken has some bizzare 80s mullet. They both look like idiots. In the video they said they wanted to go back to SFII and evolve the game from there. Only one problem, SFII is quaint, and looked good only for the 80s and early 90s. By todays standards those designs are crap. I loved how the characters were designed and animated in SF III, this is just terrible. What a nightmare. Sure they will change the game quite a bit before release. But the graphics look pretty far along.

im not loving Ryu's face but oh well. so far it looks just like a graphical update of SF2 which wont be bad but it also wont be the most inventive thing on the planet. though there really isnt that much you can do with a fighting game. Though the SSB series seems to bring something new to the table every time but that might just be because of the nature of the characters. i will definitely give this game a try. Though SF2ce on XBLA works just as well.

Though in all seriousness, people really need to go back and look the last generation of Street Fighters. SFIV isn't the massive departure that people make it out to be.

Looks disappointing. I can't get Street Fighter EX out of my head after seeing the footage. It simply looks like a better version of Street Fighter EX. I need a true successor to Street Fighter III Capcom! 2D graphics and smooth animation! :(
