The idea of R&C: Size Matters on the PS2 really rubs me the wrong way. Size Matters was one of the main reasons I shelled out the cash for a PSP. Now it's (probably) getting ported to PS2? I know it's a good thing, over all...just, y'know...GRAAARGH. -_-;;

Sure, playing it on a bigger screen and with improved controls would be nice. But then I already got EVERYTHING in the PSP version. As fun as it would be -- Ratchet & Clank never gets boring to me -- I don't think I'm going to buy the game a second time, even if they add any extra content.

Tenshigami

@David_TheMan (The Original): There's no historical precedent for a handheld and a console that could freely port software from one system to the other with virtually no loss in quality (or necessity for enhancement).

Secondly, plain common sense dictates that if one already own a game system that features a great number of games also present on another console, there's far less incentive to buy that second console. We've already seen this in action when Vice City Stories sold a fraction of what Liberty City Stories did, and virtually every opinion on the matter pointed to the expectation that it would later be ported to the PS2.

It's happened already. And it will continue to happen as long as Sony makes the boneheaded decision to port its exclusives to a dying system.

The only possible good I can see coming out of this (and maybe it's been Sony's plan all along) is to string people along with "new games" for the PS2 until the PS3 drops to a price that many of these gamers find appealing.

The problem is once again though it's at the potential expense of PSP software sales. I can only hope that Sony isn't stupid enough to green light God of War and Crisis Core for PS2 release...those are the closest things that system has to a Halo or a Pokemon and they need to remain exclusive.

But maybe you're right and in the end it won't matter much. Being in second place frequently does allow for a smoother transition into a strong lead, and lord knows Nintendo is going to be forced to compete against itself between supporting the DS and pushing it's successor for at least a couple of years after the debut of the PSP2. So maybe these decisions won't be all that damaging to the PSP after all. I guess we'll just have to wait and see (though I stand unwaveringly by the GoW/CC assertion).

Nightshift_Nurse

@Nightshift_Nurse

I don't agree. Again there is no evidence to suggest that the PS2 is canabalizing sales of PSP games, and there is historical knowledge that handhelds and consoles are two different markets that don't affect each other, like console and PCs.

I see no reason why they should not share the game wealth between the two systems since they both serve two different markets. Its more money for sony and no negatives.

David_TheMan

@David_TheMan (The Original): No good can possibly come from cannibalizing the PSPs stable of AAA exclusives. And while the user base for PSP hardware may be increasing at a rapid pace, software isn't catching up to it. Sony isn't helping the situation by removing so much of the allure of titles you simply can't play anywhere else.

A much smarter move would be to simply do what was done during the PS1 to PS2 era of transition. Just localize all the titles that didn't pass muster during the heyday of the system...or snap up the ones that are still coming out. It was that period in the PS1's lifecycle (going from transitional to defunct) that saw the release of One Piece Mansion, Castlevania Chronciles, Final Fantasy Origins, Final Fantasy Chronicles, Dragon Ball Z Ultimate 22, etc.

Nightshift_Nurse

The last time I checked the PS2 was still selling quite a few systems. So, why not do some port-overs? Developers aren't exactly focusing a lot time on making NEW PS2 titles (nor should they). And besides, Sony ain't stupid. They know that the primary uses for the PSP is to be hacked and run emus, with the secondary purpose of accenting the kewlness of the PSP/PS3 remote capabilities.

Mr.SithNinja

Christ Sony, get with the fucking program already. Continuing to support the PS2 isn't going to gain you any more significant market share. Continuing to siphon off the PSPs best and brightest exclusives will lose you some market share, though.

Sony has shot themselves in the foots with the whole PSP to PS2 thing so many times they don't even have any toes left.

They never should have allowed Rockstar to port Liberty City Stories, it just set an extremely bad precedent.

Nightshift_Nurse

Seems that Sony is porting a lot of the PSP's games to the PS2. I think it should be the other way around. If a game on the PSP is on PS2 it may keep people from purchasing a PSP. Just looking at things from a business standpoint.

Though, FFT and Disgaea are reason enough to own a PSP, in my opinion. Portable versions of two of the greatest SRPG's ever? I'm sure those sold some PSP's.

Ryadic
