I'm really disappointed, I still don't see why portal is THAT good, and more importantly, how people can say that it's better than episode 2. I'm not saying this just to be different, I genuinely think it's not all that good, and it's a weird thing that the whole gaming press likes it so much.

Seriously, the so-called funny writing in portal is not all that funny. "There is no cake", ok it's kind of funny when you see it on the wall for the first time but I think it has become a stupid sentence, there are much better ones in other games. The portal gun is innovative, yes, but the levels aren't groundbreaking, and I have to say that they are a bit repetitive. Surely, the twist at the end was very good, but that doesn't make it the best game ever...

I thought Episode 2 had better writing AND dialogue, (spoiler ------->), the part with the two resistance soldiers in the antlion cave being a good example. Overall episode 2 was much underrated because of portal.

I especially agree with WRAITHFIGHTER int that "there were a lot of more complete games out there". If portal was to be a truly great game, it had to do a bit more than that. Concept isn't enough, there should be more substance in portal. The so-called "short but great experience" is, for me, a bit of an excuse to throw out a concept and not really make a game, because the portal gun as a game mechanic doesn't have the same simple power as, say, the tetris mechanics, it's not enough and the game needs more than that. I'd say the portal gun should be incorporated in a larger game.

The PC list is also missing STALKER if you ask me...

Super Paper Mario - Wii GoTY! It's all a matter of taste.

For XBLA, I'm surprised at Undertow. I thought Pacman CE or Puzzle Quest would be in there. Of the three current choices, I'd go Alien Hominid, but my write-in vote would be Pacman CE.

Although many of you have already posted this, the top PS2 titles should probably be:

Odin Sphere
God of War 2
Persona 3 (I haven't played it, but everybody else seems to have)

BioShock FTW, overall, even though there isn't an overall. I know Kotaku wants to avoid flame wars, but isn't that what awards are good for, the arguing?

Portal is a definite runner-up.

Part of me wants to yell out (while holding my nose to get the full nasal-nerd effect): "But what about Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness for the PSP?! GOD!".

But, of course, it's just a remake and really doesn't deserve to be on a list like this. Even if I bought a PSP just to play it.

I would have to second the remark of not putting Pokemon: Diamond/Pearl in the DS category. I loved Puzzle Quest, but Diamond/Pearl are easily the best Pokemon games I've ever played. Also, it's a bit odd that Puzzle Quest takes up both the PSP and DS category. Isn't there some difference between the two (as far as I've heard)?

As incredible of the contents of The Orange Box are, I'm always a bit, uh, confused, when it's on GOTY lists like this. It's an amazing deal, sure. But it has 5 games. Which of those games warrants the nomination? Obviously, the answer can be HL-2 or Portal, but placing the whole disc on a list like this judges it as a product and not a piece of work. I'd have picked at least one of the games in the box, if we're going super-anal about it.

Looking again while writing this, I've also noticed the lack of Rock Band. I'm sure it was up for contention, but there was only three slots available for each category. So maybe that's why it was passed over.

I will have to give props for the lack of Halo 3.

As for XBox360 GotY, If Bioshock and Orange Box are in the list then Halo 3 needs to be up there too.

Fanboy or not nobody can argue that even the Halo 3 beta set an online multiplayer standard that few other games can match. They, listen and adhere to the community they have created. Marketing gimmick or not I enjoyed finishing the fight alot more than Bioshock. Simply because the previous Halo games gave emotional significance to the characters and events way more then (probably) the best intro and unique storyline this year, found in Bioshock, ever could. Which isn't Bioshock's fault, it just personally made Halo 3's storytelling better for me.

As for XBLA to mention E4 is to seriously have your head lodged so deep up your arse, your sphincter is in danger of causing death by strangulation...seriously.

Worms, Bomberman Live (Baring in mind, despite it's popularity and hundreds of releases, decent bomberman games are ever harder to come by), Exit....hell even Pac-Man CE or Hexic 2 would feel right at home in E4's place.

But from the list;
Xbox 360 GotY:
Orange Box, quite simply because I have never seen a 5-in-1 game since MegaDrive(Genesis) and we will never see quality 5-in-1 for £40 ($50) ever again.

XBLA:
Alien Humanoid HD, those PDA games rock, I hardly play the core game.

But seriously, your list is cliche and rather bad........bar Desktop Tower Defence that game is like crack, only more widely available.

Listen guys, I know it's fashionable to pretend that the PS2 is dead and all...but the sales numbers tend to disagree with you. The PS2 has some great end-of-life titles coming out now, by teams that have years of experience with the hardware and a huge installed user-base to draw upon.

Like others have stated before, the exclusion of Prime 3 is blasphemous. Super Paper Mario was fun, but was paced terribly. It gave you all the story of an RPG, with the short battles of an action platformer. Hence, for every hour you spent stomping on baddies, you spent 5 hours talking, and doing fetch quests.

And why is Portal the game nominated for PC, when the whole Orange Box is nominated for the 360? The multiplayer for TF2 is better on the PC then the 360.

Its good how you've split off the platforms in a way, but its a bit strange how you've handled multiformat games here. For instance, why is CoD4 only on the PS3 list? I played it on PC myself, and I loved it just as much as you loved it on the PS3.

I dont think there's much point in trying to avoid flame-baiting in BEST GAMES EVAR lists. It's going to happen any way you do it...

I was under the impression the worst DS game was Deal or No Deal. It has more problems than you'd ever expect for such a simple premise. For instance, every time you turn it on the first game it gives you has exactly the same arrangement of money in the suitcases, with a small set of other patterns it will play afterwards rather than true randomization.

Decent list, but I have to take issue with any list of Wii GOTY candidates that doesn't have Metroid Prime 3. The game pretty much proved that the Wii could be a superior console for shooters if the controls were just done right, not to mention just being all-around a great game. I think it deserves Super Paper Mario's spot, not to say that that was a bad game (it's pretty fun), but I think Corruption's better.
Also going to chime in in pointing out the inconsistency of nominating the Orange Box for 360 and Portal alone for PC. Other than that, decent list.

@mystic54: I just meant in terms of it being an FPS, agreed that its a fresh take on the COD formula, and an overall great game. I'm a casual FPS fan, if that term even makes sense, but my point was if they're just judging on originality and bringing something new to the table in some aspect I can see why some of the games that were off the list or low on it didn't rate higher.

My 2007 wrap up after 12 drinks:
I sold my ps2
I own a pc, wii and a 360:
that being said Bioshock was an eye opening shooter
the Wii was well, the Wii... nothing was great, a lot was amusing
Mass Effect made me skip work to play it, too bad there isn't a warning that says, " one more mission and your done"
COD4 was better than i expected,and the multi player edges it ahead of of bioshock
desktop tower defense was awesome for a week
world in conflict would have been the best rts in a decade if they had bothered to put a fucking skirmish mode in the game...still waiting for that update
I hate WOW, but can not stop, is it voodoo?

hmmm...unfortunately my game playing this year was definitely lacking (still haven't played portal) but due to a sudden unavoidable increase in my use of public transit my psp has been receiving a lot of love...and i was shocked to not see any of the games that have been sucking up my time on your list. of course then i realized that most of them were remakes(disgaea, gitaroo man, srw mx, fft). but what about games like jeanne d'arc, hajime no ippo portable, and crisis core? all amazing games.

I think its interesting that shooters really got hosed here, Metroid no-show, no Halo 3, and Cod4 only on the PS3 list. I totally agree though, just based on the fact that all of those games along with UT3 and others are just refinements of an old formula. UT3 in particular plays so much like UT1 in some respects its uncanny. The games chosen all brought at least one thing new to the table, and hence no PS2 section, would have been like having a GBA section, FFVI on GBA FTW! :)

Ok first of all portal as game of the year. I sat playing it with my daughter and we were just laughing our arses off at it, if only for the "hey daddy does my bum look big in this portal?" comment I would have paid just for that game. SMG just behind.
I also would like to register my surprise that MP3 wasn't included, it not only radically altered how I want any FPS to control,(seriously I never want to go back to twin stick,) even though it isn't an FPS as such. The level designs were great, the graphics were pretty and it was more polished than a lot of the stuff in the list.
I would like to vote for Zach and wiki but it still isn't out in the U.K. Damnit!

I said my personal criteria for best of the year has incremental upgrades trumped by whole new experiences. It certainly counts as a "new release". :)

But that said, Pokemon was probably the worst offender of that all year. I still had my copy on release day, but damn if I haven't been there before.

@Spritz: I support Puzzle Quest because it's so long. It's an excellent puzzle game that you can keep coming back to year round. I got it the day the daxter bundle came out, and I'm still playing it during trips.

I'm confused, but otherwise pretty decent pics except for no mention of Call of Duty 4 on the 360 side. A game that almost beats Halo 3 in people online and it doesn't get a mention? I know you guys want to be a bit different from everybody else but come on.

The reason why all the other GOTY awards talk about Genre awards is, well, genre is more important than hardware. The difference between a PS3 game and a 360 game is trivial and inconsequential. It's just a matter of "Can I play it?" You might as well give out awards for "Best PC game requiring less than 2 ghz processor".

However, genre plays a much bigger role in differentiating games. An RPG on the 360 is very much different from a Platformer on the 360, while RPG's on different consoles share a lot in common.

And the list? Eh. Portal was an excellent "Proof of Concept" game and wonderful on so many other levels, but it was a one-trick pony gameplay-wise (amazing trick, to be sure tho). There were a lot of more complete games out there (Bioshock, CoD4, a half dozen RTS's...) that deserve a nod more than Portal, and certainly DTD. Sorry, but i'm not gonna place an internet flash game over bioshock...

Geometry wars was decent but I think it was really made for two analog sticks. The ds controls are sub-par and it lags often. The soundtrack was awesome however.

Bioshock. No doubt. It was the most immersive game of the year, imho, and the twist left me shocked and unable to speak. It's been a long time since a game has done that, and I've been around a while.
Good list, tho. I wish the PS3 would have had more this year. (R & C was cool... but didn't reach the level of enjoyment to compare to the 360's offerings)
There's always next year to justify my investment.

Personally, I have a tough time picking favorites. I tend to rate things in cloud-like formations of whether it was fun, frustrating, challenging, fair, worth playing more than once, worth finishing even once, whether it was a new experience I haven't had a dozen times before, etc.

I only offer a PS2 list because it's so easy to drop those 3 for PS3 GOTY. The rest of my favorites are a murky mess of varying levels of joy.

Sorry, Kirby. Even if a game gets patches, updates, new content, etc. Its still the same game, its not like it was re-released when it got new content. If that was the case, WoW would of been re-released a bazillion time s and nobody would like that.

As for expansion packs, those would count. Just it wouldn't count the original game.

I think it is unanimous, that the PC got the short end of the stick here as far as games. That, or maybe most of the editors always mention every PC game post that their PC isnt up to snuff, so to speak, thus why a flash game was mentioned and not C&C3 or WiC, Crysis is obviously by default since it cant run on anyone's machine (har har).

It is mind blowing that Bioshock isn't in the PC category, and even more so that Portal is. Portal was cool and kinda the "it" game, but as a whole it was lacking compared to other games. Bioshock was near perfection, as far as shooters go, with Call of Duty 4 being 2nd.

@Torgen: Agreed. Don't get me wrong... I'm not trying to slight MP3 at all. I'd probably stick it at number four. I mean, yes, it IS better than before, but it's not bringing as much "hey, we're reinvisioning this genre/franchise" as it did several years ago. At least not compared to the three listed above it and what has happened to FPS on other systems.

It's not like my criteria for being good is that it has to be all new: I think Ratchet deserves its spot on the PS3 list, for example. But when it comes to the Wii, totally shaking up expectations and delivering something quite unique and unavailable elsewhere trumps an experience that is otherwise similar to where we've been before.

OBJECTION!!! On the PC it's Portal but on the 360 it's all 5 games? That's not very fair considering Portal + TF2 is an ass kicking combo... I didn't even think the 360 port was that well done. TF 2 (The best part of the OB imo) was terrible on the 360 due to listen servers. I'd give Halo 3 the final spot over the Orange Box for 360. I don't care what you think of it. It's one of the few games on the 360 with fantastic multiplayer and barely any lag over the shit xbox live network.

@dv8godd: M'3 (M'''?) also had upgraded storytelling, at least compared to its predecessors, although I personally liked the you vs. a planet vibe the pre-Fusion/Prime Metroids had. There's a lot of more-of-the-same-with-better-graphics getting nods on the other consoles, and improving the controls should be worth a lot. Maybe if proper FPSes had Z-targeting I'd play them.

@Green-clad Gamer Dude: MP3 is mostly more of the same with upgraded visuals and updated controls. It'd be the same as putting Halo 3 up there. That is NOT that the game is bad... it is very good... but it's just not bringing anything particularlyl new to the table.

And seriously, as FPS goes... Metroid Prime isn't the shining star it once was.

All three on the list I personally agree with. They all brought something new and stood out as unique experiences in their own right that didn't have equals elsewhere, let alone betters.

@dv8godd: Clearly the solution is for the (spiritual) sequel to Z&W to be Ninja-based. I mean, since getting caught was always fatal in Z&W, it makes sense to make it more explicitly stealth based.

I do sort of find the lack of a PS2 best of category sort of odd, but other than that the list seems tip-top. I would be tempted to toss RE4 on the Wii list though. PS: Love the trophy-coin!

I'm half afraid that people will end up buying it anyway out of gift-giving desperation and sheer lack of knowledge. Die hard Nintendo fans will know better... but Toys'r'Us is filled with plenty of mouth breathers that have no idea. Those people will buy Ninjabread Man over Zack and Wiki because of the title alone. I weep for our future.

@Americana: The Orange Box games can be purchased individually on PC but no 360. Most of us felt that while OB was compelling it was really Portal that set it apart most.

Ya, I agree about the PS2. It needs Goods and Bads too. I think there was more PS2 games released then PS3 games this year...

Also, I am not sure how Orange Box and Bioshock are top for Xbox 360, but not for PS3/PC (Orange Box) and Bioshock on PC. If those games are that great, how are they not that great on the other systems. Somehow Transformers is universally bad, but Bioshock and Orange Box was only great on the Xbox 360?

Also, I think you forgot about a game. If you are going to vote on Worst Game for the Xbox 360, and not include Hour of Victory which took home historically low scores in OXM and terrible reviews across the board. Gamespot's users have voted it worst of the year for all games, and Metacritic has it as the Dud of the year for Xbox 360.

Yeah, I feel the PC has been led down a dark alley and raped by a drunken horde of game bloggers. Crysis, technically nice, play wise meh. DTD please, is that barrel like an inch deep? Where the hell is ETQW? The game is PC exclusive (timed) and offers a lot more depth and fun than many online FPS games. We should be recognising these games not burying them under a ton of generic sequels!

Anyway. Portal, deserves a dear place in all our hearts and I'd honestly like to reward the idea and execution with the overall GOTY. Let's just hope vale can actually run with a episodic version of portal every quarter of 2008.

@Americana: i was thinking the same. Bioshock was better on pc ...

soldier of fortune payback was better than battle for the pacific ( same devs , same engine , worst gameplay )...anyway , both were the worst :P

Because you can buy Portal seperately on the PC. On the console, your only choice is to buy the entire damn box.

@dv8godd: But it's so awesome. No, I didn't buy it, but that's because I don't have a Wii. So I just printed out the Cover, and put it over my Persona 3 copy. When my friends come over, they say "Dude, you got Ninjabread Man?!", and I say "HELL YEAH! GOTY Material, right there!". When they ask to play, I say I'm busy, or I loaned it away. I can't wait until I actually get it though. Gamefly sales had it for $5 or something.

Huge problem there. It is definitely better than Super Paper Mario, hands down, no questions asked. Even if you just go by ratings, metacritic shows it's a full 5 points ahead of SPM. Resident Evil 4 could fill the spot just as well, though it's a rehash.

It hurts to see such a good game go unnoticed.
