For Mass Effect, a big marketing campaign would've been really good because yeah while it's an RPG and those usually don't have mass public appeal, it is a really different game. Everytime someone who doesn't play many games watches me play Mass Effect and talk to someone, they go, whoa, that's pretty cool, it's like a movie. They could really have built off of that and would've drawn in so many people instead of that one crap 20 second ad...

It has to do with the fact that this discussion is about selling hardware. If people aren't going to be buying the software, they aren't, obviously, going to be buying the hardware required to utilize said software. Also, without game sales, there isn't any incentive for a publisher/developer team to create software for a platform that isn't going to meet requirements for profitability. Not that think those games you made are great risks...most of them will probably sell just fine, the thing is, none of those games are system sellers. I don't know anybody who's been holding out on this generation until Banjo Kazooie 3 hits the market. Too Human, Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, while all seem to have a high probability of being great games, they're all relatively niche titles. 90% of the people who are going to buy them already own a 360. (No, that's not a number I arrived at scientifically... I pulled it out of my ass, and I speculate that it's pretty damn close to accurate anyway). The only title on that list that may sell some systems in Japan is Ninja Gaiden 2. But I doubt it'll do THAT well. Lost Odyssey, one of the games on your list, is already out in Japan and it didn't do especially well. It'll probably be off the top 30 by next week, if I had to venture a guess. And it certainly didn't do much to spike system sales. The people who bought it are those who had already adopted the 360 into their living rooms, which is to say not many in Japan, and I don't suspect it'll be even as popular in America as it was in Japan. The game, for one, doesn't like that good, and from all accounts in the industry, isn't all that good. Mistwalker's other game, Blue Dragon, wasn't very successful either. As far as the other titles, I've never even heard of Dogtag or Mobile Ops and they both sound like budget titles (I admit I haven't taken the time to looking them up since seeing them on your list, but if there's any indication by the fact that I've never heard of them, I'd predict they're not going to make waves). Nobody even knows was Lionhead's other game is, or if it'll be out anytime within the next year. Rare has said they are not working on Killer Instinct 3, and if they announce it soon, I doubt it'll be ready by next year. And Gears of War 2 will be pretty big, I'm certain of that, it'll do a couple million at least... but it won't be a big system seller. It'll mostly appeal to those of us who already played the first one (which I absolutely loved, by the way). This isn't mentioning the fact that who knows if Gears of War 2 will even come out next year. Might, might not.

So, let me put something in your mind here: Out of nearly 120 million PS2's in the world, there are less than 40 million 360's, PS3's, and Wii's combined right now. There were less than 50 million Xbox and Gamecube sales combined, in their entire lifespans. So as you can see, the majority of the core of videogame consumers out there have no yet adopted a new system into their homes. More than two thirds of last-gen gamers only had experience with Sony in their own homes, and a lot of them will eventually pick Sony again, partly because it's familiar to them, when it's time to move on up to the new generation. I mean, if you look at a game like Metal Gear Solid, it's sold something like 7 million copies I think. It's been out a long time, and MGS 2 probably sold somewhere near that same amount (couldn't find the figures off hand). There are not even as many PS3s in the world yet as there will most likely be copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 a few years from now. So that'll sell some systems. But honestly, how many systems can one game sell? A couple million, max? Perhaps Halo is responsible for a couple million system sales, but I think its push on the success of the 360 is mostly over, those who were going to adopt already have. I mean, if MGS4 and FFXIII combined sell ... say ... 6 million PS3's, then we're still not even close to seeing 120 million PS3's out there, and if you combine the Wii and 360 into the sales, we're nowhere near the 160 million consoles that sold during last generation. My point is, I think the factors that are going to make these consoles ridiculously popular and visible in over a hundred million homes worldwide are not even on the horizon yet. There's still a huge amount of growth to be done this generation, and the question's still up in the air as to which force will dominate the industry, because at the moment, none of them are even close to where they will end up, and the announced software of the foreseeable future is not going to get us there... we'll have to wait a while longer to see how these things really tick. At this point, though, I'm seeing the Wii as the one who will take over the PS2's position in last generation's standings. If I see any of these systems as standing out in terms of value and bargain in the eyes of consumers, to the point where more than 100 million people will spend their money on it... it'll be the Wii. For one thing, if you look at the PS2 and try to figure out why it was so popular... it's the little things, like cheap budget games, and sheer variety of titles, all the hardcore Japanese style RPG's, American style shooters, casual puzzle games, casual singing games, music games, and camera-based games. Just the little things. Something for everyone. And Wii seems to be doing that now. I don't see much on the Wii that I want, but sales numbers don't lie, and people seem to want Wii Play, minigames, family games, budget games, and casual games. I just hope the 360 and PS3 bang out some more variety to appeal to the masses, or they will lag far behind... and I think both systems have a great grasp on the hardcore gaming market.

i know a few people with 360s, a few people with wiis.. but most people just still have a ps2.

not everyone wants to spend a lot of money on a new system, but i do hear a lot of people that wish they had a ps3.. especially when they hear about games coming out.

i didn't know if a lot of people would hear about uncharted, but actually.. the game sounds pretty popular among my non-ps3 owning friends.. they think it looks awesome and they want it.

a few more games like that come out, and they'll make the switch... a few of them already have, or are planning to.

personally, im waiting for the dualshock 3 bundle to come out next april-june whenever...

i think the people that wanted a next-gen console earlier were getting the 360... but i think peoples interests have shifted since the beginning, and rather than picking up a 360, people are looking at the ps3 or the wii.

the halo fans already have their 360s.

MGS outselling splinter cell conviction? I doubt it. The MGS series sold a lot simply because the playstation 1 and 2 dominated. When you have an install base better than the competition your games will sell better. Splinter cell is a franchise and it will sell as well or better than MGS.

Oh and FF13 isnt coming in 2008 from what ive heard. Most people are saying 2009 as the release date is TBA.

As for quality over quantity, you sound like a gamecube fanboy from 5 years ago. Funny stuff. No offense. So basically youre saying fable 2, banjo 3, splinter cell, ninja gaiden 2, etc...are all bad quality games? This is a whole different ballpark. It isnt the last generation. Sony isnt dominating and theres no way that they will. Microsoft and Nintendo both made steps in the right direction that stopped any chance of playstation domination. The Ps3 and 360 will both have great games on them. I just think its more likely that the 360 will have more and I find it frustrating when people constantly say shit like "the 360 has nothing in 2008" when the games that PS3 fanboys always talk about are Gt5, MGS 4, KZ2 and FF13. Some of those games are not sellers, Ninja Gaiden was not a system mover or even much of a game seller and the second one wont be either. Lost Odyssey could've been a AAA title had it been on a Japanese console but as it is it wont sell a lot either. MGS and FF are franchise games which will by far outsell any of those titles you mentioned

I just don't see the incentive in the market for people to go out and buy a 360 next year. There's no killer, system-selling software coming out. I mean, obviously the thing's not dead in the water, it'll have consistently good sales next year, but in order for the system to do more than it did this year, there needs to be something major. And obviously, nothing software-wise is as major as Halo 3, so the only trick they could have up their sleeve to bring in the magic numbers would be a significant price drop. If they don't bring that, then there's no way they beat their 2007 numbers.

Think about this, while we're at it: the PS2, and this is just as of March 2007 (obviously, a lot have been sold since then, but not many compared to how many before that, so we don't need to fool with those numbers) ... anyway, as of March 07, there is a 117 million large install base for the Playstation 2, worlwide. That's a lot. The total number of PS3, Wii, and 360 consoles in the world at the end of September 2007 was approximately 32 million. By the end of the this year, let's call that 40 million, which is probably big. Everybody knows that Wii is selling more than PS3 and 360, and Wii cannot possibly sell more than 1.8 million a month, because that's all they're making. So for the sake of argument, let's just call it ... 10 million, total number of units moved since September to the end of this year, including all 3 of the major systems. We're still only looking at about a 40 million install base for this generation's consoles. That compares to over 160 million from last generation, including PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. PS2 made up 72 % of last generation's console sales. Right now, we're only seeing a small fraction of those gamers who have made the jump to the new generation... and of that portion, a lot of them are NEW gamers, who didn't buy a system last generation (I'm talking about the Wii and its audience here). So when more than 100 million gamers decide on a new console in the next couple of years, I think a lot of them are going to stick with Sony. Just my speculation. T

here's a lot of factors that add to it, though, and part of it is that a lot of those 100 million gamers are those who are into the Japanese style of gaming, like Metal Gear Solid, Gradius, and Final Fanasy. Japan is selling more PS3's each week than 360, and I think those developers who made their mark on the PS2 are going to move on to the PS3 versus the competition when they decide to go to the new generation of graphics powerhouse machines. When they do, then a lot of those 100 million American gamers are going to follow suit and pick up a PS3 to play the localized versions of their games, and I think it's going to kickstart next year with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4.

One kid got a PS3 for Hannukah and the other kids made fun of him mercilessly. Sure this is anecdotal, and it's the U.S. where the 360 is making all its ground up and is dominant at the moment over PS, but I found it interesting.

I loaned the kid my copy of Uncharted and told him to invite his friends over so they'd shut up about it. ;)

But it does underscore the importance of being in the lead in a market. People want what thier friends have so they can play with them and be part of the crowd and to play online with them.

With MS being so bold, they are probably planning a significant price drop this next year. That truly is the only way that sales will increase beyond what they are now. Unless they have some really great exclusives that they haven't revealed yet.

No one truly thinks that the PS2 sold 50 million units at $299.99, right? They barely sold 10 million at $299.99 I believe. The majority of the 100 million PS2 consoles sold after dropping to $199.99 and then to $149.99. The same with the original Xbox.

CoD4 on 360 has been literally flying off the shelves since it launched over a month ago. Assassin's Creed on 360 also destroyed the PS3 version. No, I'm not quoting sales numbers - these are just my personal experience talking. However, I know a multiplatform game selling better on the 360 doesn't mean the PS3 won't overtake the console, but I think with games like CoD4 the online community will keep gamers playing on their 360s as opposed to their PS3s.

I don't have a PS3, and I really want to play R&C and Uncharted, but I don't at this time want to have both HD consoles. My friends are all on Live so getting rid of my 360 isn't an option for me, so the PS3 will need to wait at least another year for my cold hard cash.

But I think that could change once some conventions start up and Microsoft can start showing gameplay and stuff for all of these exclusives which really seem very cool but none of them are very widely publicized or hyped up. The PS3 definitely has quite a few hyped up titles for 08 and those will definitely, definitely help a lot and at this point, it has much more selling power. But the thing is, it looks worse for the 360 since so many of the new titles coming for it are unproven and first in the series and if they aren't, there isn't any information on them. This is one of the reasons why I think having no X07 was a terrible, terrible idea. Now, they have all of these exclusives that would normally be hyped up and detailed 2-3 weeks ago that everyone would be excited for citing exactly what's in store for the 360's 08 lineup but they didn't do it. For example, some of the games on that list are really cool but nobody has really heard of them. Look up Elveon sometime, it seems totally awesome. The game Left 4 Dead is out in 2 months and not many people have really even heard of it too much yet if you look up the info on it, it sounds totally awesome. Right now, Too Human, BK3 (maybe), Alan Wake, and Fable 2 would be getting mass media coverage right now and lots of hype if there had been an X07 too.

Anyway, to be fair, though, it doesn't seem likely that a lot of those proven titles on the PS3 will be out next year. God of War 3 I would definitely doubt being out this year considering the last one just came out at the beginning of this year and the game will have to go through a platform hardware jump. I would DEFINITELY doubt FFXIII this year since when Famitsu spoke to the FF guys at TGS this year (or around that time), they said they were only 13% done with the game and 1.3% with Versus. MGS4 though, you do have that. Motorstorm and Resistance weren't exactly system sellers to begin with but they would help a lot probably if they came out next year. I can't say about Disgaea 3, I don't follow those games so I have no idea about what it may do. Wipeout isn't actually a full release I think, I think it's like an updated version or something last I heard. You're right about everything else though (except Heavy Rain, I don't know why everyone's so worked up about that game since nobody even knows what it's about). All those things are true though and they're what're making me get a PS3 early next year.

But yeah, for the 360, look up some of those games if you don't know about them, they're pretty cool. Specifically Elveon and look for the Dungeon Hero video on Gametrailers. Also, I think Wii is actually a bit different. All of its heavy hitters came out or will be out before May I think. All they really have left are Brawl and Mario Kart, everything else was kinda doled out slowly throughout this year.

Compare that to the PS3 line-up and while the amount of exclusives aren't as great, the ones that are will sell: MGS4, GoW3, Motorstorm 2, Wipeout, Disgaea 3, Socom, Tekken, Hot Shots, FF13, etc.... MS has games that dont amount to much.

Not to mention when you factor in games that aren't highlighted but getting a lot of buzz (i.e. LBP, KZ2, Heavy Rain, LA Noire, White Knight Story) Toss in Home and the multi-plat games like Eternal Sonata, GTA, and DMC you've got a mess on your hands.

But we can see a trend here though, MS launched a year early and thus all their heavy-hitters came out this year. The Wii and PS3 came a year later and all their heavy-hitters come out next year and into '09 (Since Brawl and Kart got pushed into next year)

Most of the Wii games are...I don't even know and this will sound fanboyish but Sony has got a pretty tight lineup for 08. From the looks of it, just about EVERY major Sony franchise is getting its iteration in 2008.

The 08 lineup of 360 games is expanisive, but not a single one carries the hard-hitting name recognition that'll make people look twice other than Fable, and that was such a pretty polarizing game (half the people who played it hated it).

So sure, you're right, 360's got more 08 exclusives, but if you read through that list again, you'll realize that about half of them are going to PC anyway , and half of them aren't even worth bragging about.

I'm 100 percent confident that they'll drop the Arcade model to $249 or less and the Pro to 299. That 249 price point will go head on with the Wii. I remember last year around this time that Microsoft was crowing about how they had shipped their 10 millionth 360.
...but since that time, the system's install base is only hovering around maybe 13 million, IIRC.

So...the were able to ship 10 million units in their first year, but in the following year they've only managed to sell around 13 million units.
That's seems to me like it's a pretty slow sales rate.
Taking a guess, they likely sold around 4-6 million units for the year.
...and that's not even questioning whether or not they count refurbs on the RRoD as a new unit (as far as I know, the answer to that question is unknown, but I could be wrong!)

If it weren't for the 360's stellar attach rate and great games, I honestly think we'd be pounding nails in it's coffin by now. Microsoft has has HAS to get away from this "hardcore gamer" image they've built up for themselves. It's a tiny niche market (that Sony is foolishly also now aggressively targeting).
But I'm not sure that's really even possible, at this point. They've been actively marketing the Xbox brand as "XTREEEEEME RAAAWWWWK HARDCOREZ!" since Xbox1 launched.

So yeah...I think they've painted themselves into a corner and they're going to see themselves get cut short because of their aggression to enter the market.

@Kyle81: Actually, that really isn't a reason why Gears couldn't come out in Fall 08. It's still pretty likely in fact. Many companies don't like to officially announce sequels to games until they have a lot of substance for them. Don't forget, Call of Duty 4 wasn't even announced until April 2007 and still easily made a November 2007 release date.

@Sparx88: I'm not entirely sure what your definition of grand exclusive is. If you mean games that will appeal to the less-informed gamers then you're right, it doesn't have too many of those and the PS3 has the advantage in that regard. But the 360 actually has quite a few more exclusives lined up, very much equal to the PS3's and very much surpassing the Wii's pretty poor 08 lineup as of now. @Spartan1308: Ninja Gaiden is not a system seller, hell the games have not even sold well. People THINK Ninja Gaiden sold well but it really didn't DOA Volleyball sold far better sadly. It was popular with gamers and critics gave it lots of praise, but in the end NG sold like crap. People wonder why NG2 took so long to come out? Well besides recycling the game twice to squeeze out more money from it, I doubt Tecmo really wanted to invest in another NG game. And low and behold, NG2 shows up, and its being funded by MS. If MS was not involved, NG2 likely would have never been made.

I'm sure MS will unveil some new exclusives for the coming year, but right now its looking very dry. Unless they can spend a gazillion dollars on Halo Wars marketing to make people buy it like Halo 3.

Theres a bigger install base and 360 games have been shown to sell better than ps3 and wii games. Actually in August the npd said that 360 games outsell wii and ps3 games combined. Oh, and theres something like over 15 games on the 360 that have sold over a million compared to the Ps3 which has only 2 over a million sellers.

The Wii only has one RPG on it with not a single one coming or announced (not anything press-worthy anyway)... the 360 has 4 right now with Lost Odyssey in 2 months and 5 others announced (6 if you count Too Human) with 3/4 of those other 5 coming out next year and the PS3 has 1 with 3 more announced with either all 3 of them or none of them coming out next year. These are just exclusive things, no multiplatform stuff.

I don't have anything against any of the systems but I hate it when people generalize like that. Also @that other guy: How the hell do you categorize Mass Effect 2 as a shooter instead of an RPG?

And consoles usually continue to sell more and more throughout their lives as the price drops, more games come in, and more people hear about it.

I think Microsoft's big goal is to shed that 'nothing but shooters' outlook from a lot of mainstream gamers, and bump it's price down a bit to battle for lowest pricetag.

More and more of those PS2 fanboys are finally getting money for a PS3, and they're the kind of people who want a PS3 just because it's a PS3. Games are an afterthought (although they should have a decent selection to choose from that doesn't involve all shooters.)
