I wouldn't get my hopes up for anything using any kind of discs, because they would take an eternity to download. This cancels out Saturn, Dreamcast, and all the other newer ones. Of course, this is just my guess, but disc based games aren't very practical for download.

My guess is with the Master System and Commodore64. And if not those, GB/GBC would be a nice touch since they aren't available for DS anymore.

I would love the Sega Saturn though (but again, I probably wouldn't download a disc image, unless Nintendo found someway to shrink the image down to about N64 size)

C64 games from EPYX were announced in Sept. 2006 by developer System 3. According to Gamasutra System 3's Mark Cale had this to say on the matter:

"System 3 are doing virtual console games for the Wii including Impossible Mission which will go live in December. Other titles include California Games and The Last Ninja. We are also supporting the Wii with retail boxed games and we have 3 titles available for launch. They are Gottlieb Pinball Classics, Super Fruit Fall and Puzzle Ball with Leaderboard and Tennis Masters to follow in January."

My vote (hope) is C64.

Why not an Atari system, or didn't nintendo also have a deal with Philips for the CDi back in the day...now that would be crazy.

The wii could easily stream gameboy games and/or other handheld (gamegear?!) games to the DS. The DS's download play proves this theory. If Nintendo were smart about this, they'd even have it so the Wii could stream the games when it's off (AKA in standby wiiconnect24 mode).

One of them will be Game Boy/Game Boy Advance. They already emulated the Game Boy system on the Gamecube, so it's a no-brainer that we'll eventually get Game Boy games on the VC. The other system will be something with small games, probably the Master System.

Everybody saying X system can't be emulated on Wii: did you work on the dev team for that system, or make games for it? Do you know how complicated it would be to write emulators for it, specifically because you've worked with the code? All the PC emulation projects we've seen have been based on reverse engineering the hardware and playing roms, its another deal when you have actual engineers from the company who made the hardware helping you get it running.

Does that mean I think the Saturn and DC are coming to the VC? No, probably not yet, and the chances are good they may never. But to say it just can't be done seems ignorant, again unless you have the technical knowledge to back that up.

Also, I could kinda see it being 32X/SegaCD, but it just seems like they should group those together with Genesis/MD, maybe I'm tripping (didn't own a Genny until late 90s, and never had 32x/CD) but didn't you still have to have that as the base console for those add-ons?

I'm going to second Commodore 64. It's been speculated in the past, and the recent Nintendo game release list for Europe included The Last Ninja, which was available on other systems but was traditionally a C64 game.

I would love the Saturn also. I very much doubt the Dreamcast because of not only space needed for the games but because of how long said games would take to download. Saturn and Sega CD are a safer bet but with the Saturn you would need more space eventually also. I have a few Saturn games I would like to see.

As for questions about why would of took so long to get out DS/Gameboy dl's well this is Nintendo we are talking about and they like doing things their own way.

I would love to see the saturn on there, but lets face it. They havnt got a good emu running on PCs yet, so do you really think they could get one running on the wii? A console with the same power as a 1998 PC. As others have mentioned, I cant see the DC being viable either due to size of the games, however sega cd games can be compressed and worked properly for thier size requirement. So I say bring on lunar, lunar 2, vay, popful mail, snatcher, and all the other amazing sega cd games I still have disks for(and a sega cd), but would buy over again.

I am sorry guys and gals. But the most likely scenario is that there are no more consoles. the designer just got lazy and made 4x2 instead of 3x2. also if your dumb enough to buy games that old for a 5 spot. Then your dumb enough to believe that it is anything relatively recent (i.e. Dreamcast) is going to be on it. Plus, and this is just my opinion, the wii is completely overrated. it is a kids console with kid games boring ones at that. and the only mildly fun game to ever come out was wii sports and that even was boring after 6 hours.

final thought, buy a 360 or a decent gaming rig. Oh and if you want to relive the nostalgia of classics. just download roms and emulators(that is of course if you own the original game ;)

Gametap has them. They're not entirely gigantic games.

And what about Sega CD/32X games? Sure the library wasn't all that great, but they had couple good games.

Besides, high end pc's can barely emulating dreamcast - what makes you think the wii can do it? Processing speed aside, what makes anyone think nintendo was able to write a perfect emulator for a system that has notoriously buggy emulators out there.

This goes for the Saturn as well, which has never had a great emulator released for it.

I've played it, but I believe it also went under the name Blazing Heroes in the US. Might be cause for some of the confusion.

It's a pretty good game though, from what I remember. I should hook up my saturn and play it. I guess I kind of forgot about it with Shining Force 3.

My guess is that one of them is going to be computer games. Telltale games had an ad up for Wii programmers some months ago so I would not be surprised to see Sam n Max make an appearance.

Other possibility: Dreamcast: Sega has recently extended the copyright.

Game Boy would be a welcome addition, one I wondered why we didn't have available from the start.

I don't see Saturn happening, and DC is absolutely not happening. With PCE CD games, most of what you had to compress was audio. Not such a chore these days. With Saturn games you're moving into territory where more and more of the disc space was video, which was already pretty nastily compressed. Is it impossible? Probably not. Is it likely? Eh... not really.

DC, though? Seriously, folks.

Both Saturn and Dreamcast emulation would be tricky... The Dreamcast because it's a pretty powerful system (you need a pretty capable PC to do it), and the Saturn because it was an abortion of a tangled mess of hardware (you still need a pretty capable PC for it).

Either way, the space issue rears its ugly head, so unless they come out with some SERIOUS compression, they'll have to announce some kind of storage solution (playing games off SD cards, etc.)

Master System seems like a no-brainer. But I'll keep my fingers crossed for the poor souls out there who never got to play Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force 3.

Well at first I thought "Master System and Sega CD" - then I realized that they already have PC-Engine CD and out of the 6 consoles, it's lumped in with PC-Engine (TG-16 in America)... so perhaps if Sega CD games ever come (I'd be happy just to get Sonic CD), it wouldn't get it's own console slot, it'd just be included in Genesis/Mega Drive.

So my guess would go to MSX, because Nintendo did mention support for that would be coming (more than a year ago)... For some reason I thougt it already had some MSX games in Japan, but I'm probably wrong. If it's not MSX... then I have no clue. GameBoy Color would be super cool, because the DS and GBA SP don't support regular gameboy/GBC games, and nothing has since the original GBA. Saturn would be my ideal selection, but for some reason I doubt that'll happen.

C64,(oooh I might get to play cannon fodder and sensi again, and the Megadrive would be my guess, with the gameboy(color) a close third.
Mind you I still haven't been able to use my stars to buy a points card as they have been sold out since day one. Due to the new rules I've got some that run out soon which is pissing me off mightily.
Any chance a kindly Kotaku person could show some love to the Europeans here and ask Nintendo what the hell is going on? I'm sure I'm not the only person pissed off about this and you are more likely to get a straight answer.

@Anata_Kusoyarou: The DS has volatile memory that is used to hold the data for DS download play, downloads from DS demo stations and the like. The DS theoretically would be able to download a GameBoy game to this memory from a Wii and you would be able to play it on the DS until you turned off the DS (then you would have to download it again).

@cyberg4: The Wii is powerful enough... are you trying to say the Wii couldn't handle the Dreamcast?... That's just sad... They'd need a Hard Drive to do Dreamcast I think... I dunno how big the games were on average.

If it's any disk based console, I'd be shocked. The system has only 512MB memory and from when I last checked, saving game channels to SD didn't work.

The Wii just got updated to download stuff to the DS, Right? (demos, vids)

Now, IF one of the two consoles turns out to be the GC/GBC/GBA, the games should be small enough to send wirelesly to the DS.

And while there at it, they should do the same for the NES.

It would probably make sense if they rolled out with the original 8 bit gameboy. Seeing how there is very limited memory space in the Wii. Either the 8bit or the Gameboy Color, those two are a sure bet.
