For those of you that didnt try this yet, you can now play your PS1 titles that are saved to your PS3 hard drive on your PSP via Remote Play. The response time is a little slow, i only tried it on a wireless connection as of the time of this post, so yeah enjoy your PS1 games anywhere in the world without having to store them on your PSPs memory card now!

Non-copyrighted under 2 GB?

2 GB is a lot. So that's alright. Maybe not some movies, but most can probably be compressed, because if you cared about quality you'd buy the Blu-Ray version.

But seriously, why does it fall to the makers of the media players to try to restrict things to non-copyrighted? It's mostly pointless in the end, because it's easy enough to switch formats and lose very little quality, and then it loses any other information like Copyright and such. Still, it'd just be better if they left it alone and let people watch what they want to watch. Eve if you can't convert it, there's nothing stopping someone from watching it on their computer anyways. Or hooking it up to something else. Or an Xbox, which unlike the PS3, isn't the ultimate swiss army knife of gaming.

@Namarrgon: That's right I have to reestablish my Media center connection now that I have a new PC, I've only done WMP 11 so far. yeah that is a bit schizophrenic when one thinks about it some formats stream via media player only and some via media center only.

I don't think not having the option is better but just installing Linux isn't the end of the story, and not as easy if you already have data. I just don't see why Sony can't give us full use of the machine, when we do it and why the file systems to each OS is a mystery to the other side. An OS install isn't something most normal consumers would do, the firmware updates are and that is the first face of the machine customers see and use. At the current rate anyone can get Linux to run on almost any generic hardware and still be able to support accelerated video (at least they could give us 2D acceleration). I do feel that the 360 would benefit quite a bit from a release of MS's proprietary strangleholds (I'd love to swap the hard drive for any standard 2.5" SATA like I did on my PS3), and I feel that Sony would benefit by having the machine do everything the 360 does and more (yeah Blu-ray is nice to have built in though). By the way the update is out, it's support for files is hit and miss compared to the 360 but I still have to give Kudos to Sony for streaming MPeg 2s (which the 360 ignores via streaming for some reason).

Just tried out the new Divx feature. Sure enough, some of my videos were unsupported, but what I found more disappointing is that, at full screen, the player seems to clip an inch off the borders. What's up with that? I'm gonna do a little bit more testing.

@Seiven: Fair enough then, I happen to use Blu-ray because I use my PS3 more than my 360, due to free online gaming and the fact I don't have to buy a WiFi adaptor, and it was cheaper and easier than buying an add-on or another set top. I concur though, it is a stupid war.
The firmware update is sweet though, it was a bit of a pain switching to Linux to watch 90% of my videos and YDL has a trimmed resolution, which sucks. Can't say I really see that voice change thing going to any good use though, but you have to keep the interns busy somehow...

@Leighroy: Yes I have watched both Blu-Ray and HDDVD and chose HDDVD because of it's affordability and features. I have the xbox add-on and a Toshiba set top, plus have one in my laptop...I can see and hear the value in HD, BUT the average consumer cannot. I can't wait for one of them to win or dual format boxes to become the standard...I have a great set up and highly recommend a good home theater for a better gaming and movie watching experience. Once they become affordable we will see mass adoption and THAT is when we will see a victor to this stupid war. That was my point, not that it is not worth it.

The sound is alot better, especially if you have a nice stereo/home theatre and in alot of cases that's enough to encourage me to buy a movie on Blu-ray, not to mention the better picture quality. They haven't taken over yet because, yeah, they are expensive, but any new technology is expensive, DVDs were around the same price when they came out, but once prices drop a bit and more people get HDTVs/7.1 HTs people will want what they offer and the HD format(s) will sell, that'll still be another couple of years though... Until then, if you've got it use it, or not.... whatever, I don't care.

Been noticing that the TV spots for both Bourne Ultimatum and The Simpsons Movie only have the logo for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, with no "only for hd-formatx" voice over.

I guess DVD is still the major money earner and the simpler "available on DVD" message works better in NOT alienating the competing HD format owners.

I think until the discs get down to a competitive price with regular DVDs we will not see a clearly defined winner.

Yes it does but don't forget that if you are not streaming it over the network but have it on a memory stick or hard drive directly plugged into the Xbox 360 then you can't use files over 4GB as that's FAT32's limit. You are good over the network to I think 2 Terabytes :)

Get a life. Installing most versions of Linux on the PS3 is a two step process. If you can't insert a disc and press some buttons why do you have a console anyway? A great way to have a nice looking DVR in your living room is by using PS3Linux and a USB tuner. Even without full RSX access there is a lot you can do, but there is the option unlike other consoles.

The reason the RTEs are separate are to avoid copyright infringement and subverting the gaming experience. The 360 doesn't even have the option of 'Other OS', so I don't see why you think not having the option at all is better. I'd rather have more features and an open system personally.

It's a function of the software you stream with if you'll have problems. I use a Free Software program for Linux, and it streams and copies files to my PS3 just fine. Sometimes I just use it to copy files to the PS3. :3

@gacktplays: This install Linux crap has to stop. Not because I don't like Linux either, but because 1. A normal consumer wouldn't be installing an entire OS to a game system dealing with partitioning the drive and stuff like that and 2. It's crippled on the PS3 anyway due to them removing access for hardware acceleration. It's sad to hear that my PS3 is more limited than my 360 with stuff when it has so many cool options that should make it crush my 360 when it comes to these things (I can put a huge harddrive in my system and not pay an MS tax, but when I want to use large file over 2GB for video no dice WTF?) I was going to go the Linux route being a geek and all but after seeing the limitations such as repartitioning the drive, having to decide on what can use what since the PS3 can't read the Linux partitions and vice versa, and no hardware acceleration I just said screw it and stuck with the 120GB drive I put in it. Having to boot into a foreign environment is ludicrous, it means you have to decide to boot an OS to play your movies then shutdown and reboot to play your games not a fun option, If we could install Linux and still launch games within it, that would be a cool compromise but we can't, if there was a cool environment like the old hacked original Xboxes that might even be cool but there's not. Sony needs to get their act together and either open up the system legitimately or catch up on features without the gotchas.

Unfortunately you are wrong. Xvid supports certain formats of divx but it doesn't work the other way round.

Heres a snippet from the 360 video faq
**15. What types of AVI files are supported?
The Xbox 360 supports files encoded using MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple and Advanced Simple Profile. These files are often referred to as Xvid or DivX® video files. Many common PC DVD authoring tools, cameras, and camcorders are capable of encoding files using MPEG-4. Note that some files authored for DivX devices may also contain additional functionality(menus, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc). The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files, but does not support any of the additional functionality and in some cases will be unable to play the file.

The 360 plays back Divx, Xvid (5.0 or newer and with AC3 audio support too) wmv, wmv-vc1, mp4 (only up to 4 channel audio). I have played files up to 12gb in size with no issues. All video is streamed over my network from my iMac running connect 360.

Also, on another note, whats with the voice changer? that was removed after Xbox 1 because it was shit.

I don't think it will be too severe, it's meant to mask a child's voice not be a novelty gag. The XBL version was a novelty, with robot voices and all.

Think like a big corporation: If they are to implement a format that has an open source version and a version that isn't they will go with the format that isn't open source because they want to cover their ass. legally and otherwise.

@johnnylineup: depends on the distro you installed I'd just read up on forums relating to that distro or use google and google for specifi info. You will want to research mplayer and VLC.

Ok now Im conviced that Sony is copying the original Xbox's Live and not the the new and improved 360 version. People hated the voice changing and that was why it is dropped. In fact we have learned the annoymousness that voice changing gives is not neccessary as people feel comfortable and annonymous enough without it to make complete asses of themselves. Though if voice changing could be done good enough you couldnt tell it was happening it might be fun to play with it.

Also yes if you configure your ps3 to boot to linux you can play many many formats. You can also stream video from a server running samba. No need to encode/re-encode/transcode on the fly.

Isn't Xvid and Divx just defined by a 'tag' in the file, and the codecs can play either?

Surely then to play Xvid files in the PS3 is just requires changing this tag?

I may be wrong, my information comes from Nero 7, which has the option to change these tags when you burn to disk so they can be played in Divx or Xvid enabled players. Nero might be wrong though.

@Seiven: OK, I read that thing like 3 times and did a search for xvid and found absolutely no mention of it not being supported. Divx 3.11 is not Xvid. At least not from what I've read. Also, Kotaku is the ONLY site saying no xvid and I'll rehash my previous statement that the PS3 can already decode xvid files for thumbnail purposes. This is just one of those things that we are going to have to wait and see.

@Akmed: AFAIK, DivX is really only popular on BitTorrent and etc. these days. Most "legit" video will be in either H.264, WMV, or Flash (which conveniently uses H.263 and H.264)

The PS3 won't be able to detect if it's copyrighted or not, they just have to say that for legal purposes. The only way they know if your file is copyrighted is if it's DRM'd.

I'm almost certain there will also be support for Xvid files. If not tomorrow then soon after.

I knew Sony would find a way to make this negative. If they had just made it unrestricted, people that hate the PS3 would have no ammo. Instead, they have to neglect Xvid, and add restrictions to it.

I mean, I understand why. Sony is one of the biggest distributers out there, and I am sure that the idea of allowing an HD bootleg version of Spider-Man playing on their PS3's and Bravio's.

But understanding it or not, I am still a little irritated by it. Your job is to sell me a product, not tell me what I can and can't do with it.

You do know that DivX is a commercial standard, and that XVid is an open standard, don't you? If DivX developed the PS3 codec it could certainly be setup not to support VidX. In most cases, DivX is a LICENSED codec, and they want you to buy their $20.00 PRO package. But I do remember having to download the VidX codec to read some of the VidX videos in Windows Media Player, even though I had the DivX codec installed. So DivX may be SPECIFICALLY crippling VidX playback on the PS3. (I hope not. XBMC already supports just about every video format known to man, including the current Hi-def formats, and could care less whether the material is copyrighted or not).

I'm pretty sure xvid will work. I mean, right now my PS3 can show thumbnails for my xvids so its gotta be able to at least read them enough for that. What the hell kinda video file is over 2GB and not an uncompressed master? If the video is that damn large and is compressed then the video would have to be like 9 hours long. Do you know how hard it would be to fast forward or skip to a specific part of something like that?

@Seiven: Nope. Both DivX and Xvid are part of the MPEG 4 standard. You can install either codec on you PC and decode video of both formats to varying degrees of success. The Xbox 360 doesn't have DivX or Xvid codecs but rather has MPEG 4 capability.

Now riddle me this. When I update my 360 twice a year, it takes like 30 seconds. When I update my PS3 like 20 times a year, it takes 20 minutes or longer.

Can anyone tell me why that is? It gets annoying. I mean it's ok. I can do something else during that time. I am genuinely curious why it takes so much longer to do what seems externally to be similar stuff.

360 Doesnt recognize NTFS external hard drives, only FAT32. The biggest any file can be on a FAT32 partition is 4GB.

You can get around the limitation 2 ways.

1. Format your external hard drive in HFS+ format using a program like MacDrive.(HFS+ is the Mac file format and there is no 4GB limitation on files)

2.Stream it from a shared folder which has Windows Media Player 11 installed.

Still no Xvid support. Can't play files over 2GB. Can't play copy-righted material.

Those seem to be the only major limitations. No Xvid support is a downer. The 2GB file limit can be a problem in a few situations. Not being able to play copy-righted material will suck for those trying to obtain videos legitimately.

Although unlikely, the 2GB limit could be a file system limitation. I know a lot of older formats (like Fat 16 and HFS) can't handle files over 2GB.

Also, if the Cell processor can't handle two video streams at once, it can't be the powerhouse everyone touts it to be. I don't think PIP features on high def discs are both 1080p anyway. That would be a huge waste of space. 480p would be plenty if it's just a portion of the screen.

I use TVersity, it can convert xvid and most common codecs on the fly and stream it to my PS3 or 360. Native support for more codecs and file formats is cool though. Xvid support would be nice, but don't count on either sony or microsoft supporting it anytime soon.

Does this mean bit-perfect audio? Unless I'm just way behind here, that's a pretty major audiophile feature.

probably to prevent people from playing back High Def movies from their Hard disks(pirated or not).

Wouldn't want that eating into blu-ray discs sales like its done for the PSP and umd eh?

I think there's more to viewing fansubs that xvid. I have a Samsung that supports xvid that won't play them at all but I also have an Oppo that plays them beautifully upconverted to 1080P. Kinda shocking that they actually look so good.

Nice im very interested to see how well profile 1.1 works on the ps3 sense it doesnt have the second video processor. Im guessing we get it emulated on the hard drive.

First disc hits state side on January 1st. Resident Evil: Extinction.

You can convert anything to mpeg4, I do. and my ps3 plays them great from my mac when I use twonky.
