No, but trolls tend to have opinions just SO they can disagree. Having a contradictory opinion doesn't make one a troll, but stating it in a provocative way in an effort to get a reaction often does.

Seeing how the "casual gaming craze" drove the PS2 to 120 million units sold, I'd say it's here to stay.
No matter what some people would have you believe, the PS2 was it's generation's Wii. It had high appeal with the casual market and that was what drove it's sales.

All Nintendo did was pick up the ball after Sony dropped it.

And you have to remember, just because "throwing" footballs or "shadow boxing" doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean it is universally true for all people. Personally, I'd love to set aside whole days to bendge on Twilight Princess, but there is a reason I only have 35 stars in Galaxy despite picking it up on launch day. Life just isn't always willing to let me have the day off.

Besides, after a hard day at work, wailing on the Mii I made of my boss is great fun.

Where the hell were all these people that are claiming, "I was always loyal to Nintendo." when the Gamecube was sitting in third place last generation. Surely all of those people didn't own a Gamecube, otherwise it would have been a much larger success. So were where they? You could argue that the Gamecube didn't have enough "good" games but the ones that people are citing as the reasons to buy a Wii, Nintendo exclusives are just sequels of last generation exclusives.

I owned a Gamecube specifically for games like Metroid, Zelda Wind Waker and eventually Twilight Princess, Smash Brothers, Paper Mario... you get the idea. I own a Wii but it just doesn't get as much play time. I don't need a virtual console, I already have a ton of emulators paired with a really nice PC controller. I've kind of been turned off a little by the Wii remote gimmick. It kind of feels a little forced with some games. After a long day at work, I don't really want to come home and unwind by "shadow boxing" with my Wii in Wii sports or "throwing" a football in Madden. It's novel and fun when you have people over, kind of the way people like to get out DDR and the dance mat at parties.

I can see the attration for casual gamers who are only going to be playing the Wii for an hour or so at a time, but at the end of the day, I just find myself gravitated back to my other consoles. I'll play those games for hours on end like COD4, the Orange Box, Gears of War, Uncharted, God of War, and Oblivion.

Nintendo has done something that few video game makers have achieved and that is appeal to the untapped, non-gaming market. I just wonder how long the casual gaming craze will last.

@BPMΩ: The specifics vary a bit by which tracker you look at, but going by the Famitsu numbers (same as with GameCube and Wii in that image above), it's around 20.9 million. It's really slowed down, so while it's a sure thing it will reach 21 million, it seems doubtful it will reach 22 million.

Wii has started more quickly than PS2 in Japan, but it still has a looong way to go to catch up. DS already has, though.

I Agree the DC was the Console that made me believe SEGA were still in the game and that they could turn it around after the rubbish reception the saturn was getting, they seemed to do it all right this time around but still it failed to pick up among the masses.

I loved the DC was apart from the Megadrive/Genesis the best console SEGA ever made

I've done some simple math based on available figures. I don't think it's possible for Wii to pass PS2 worldwide. Nintendo just isn't producing enough systems. Even at 1.8 million a month - it seems that at some point PS2 was selling faster.

Basically, I took the numbers available on Wikipedia for PS2 worldwide lifetime sales up to 2007 (120 million) and divided by the number of months since launch (84), and came up with a rough estimate of something like an average of 1.4 million PS2s sold every month since launch. I think it's safe speculation to say that in 2007, PS2 was probably not selling 1.4 million systems per month worldwide. So it _seems_ logical that at some point PS2 was selling like hotcakes at a much faster rate than Wii's current trendsetting rate.

Either that or I'm on crack and missing something.

The Wii will not overtake the PS2 because Nintendo consoles last much longer than Sony consoles - over the last 7 years, there was a big number of people who've had to replace their PS2 twice or three times, I don't imagine that happening with a Nintendo console.

Also, the Wii is the natural sucsessor to the PS1 and the PS2, which were primarily targeted at people who didn't use to think about games. Sony's first two consoles were marketed as saying "games are not just for kids and geeks, adults can play them as well" and the Wii is the next natural step on that.

Not that I personally Rated the PSone or PS2 I only got the PS2 for Virtua Fighters then I sold it about 2 months later.

Dreamcast kicked ass but for all the right moves SEGA were making, they damaged the rep they had with the random release dates of the 32x and Saturn then the nomad

I think the reason that Nintendo is doing so well is the innovation and the fun factor they brought back to gaming, they got the balance right as I have matured as a gamer I am finding I want the old style adrenaline games like the DS has, I think thats why they do so well with the DS and with the Wii they are balancing party style games with more in depth ones

plus the price is a major factor, who can afford to spend £399 on a console £179 is better for the price add to the fact that Nintendo has a Rabid fan base and some of the best franchises going they are doing well, they are trying to shake of the kiddy console tag and going for an all encompassing system to bring in all types of gamers.
they are in fact beating sony at their own game with what they are doing.

Clearly the winner in Japan will be whichever one the h-game makers figure out how to make homebrew for first. If you see the aisles at Comiket lined with homebrew Wii pron games, you know it will be an unstoppable juggernaut. And it has the advantage that it's easier to use with one hand!

I love how some disgruntled gamers continue to remain awed at why the system is selling so well, blaming its popularity on only soccer moms, lack of supply, or other random "flukes" they can try and figure out.

To me, it's simple. The thing doesn't cost a ton of money, it has fun games (despite what people will try and say), and the controller works in an easy, simple, and reliable way. Soccer moms love it, sure, but so do college kids, gaming enthusiasts, little kids, and old people alike. I'm 25 and count Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil/Silent Hill games to be among my biggest influences, and I greatly enjoy the Wii. Heck, my family is still playing Wii bowling a year since we got it.

Of course, for those who see it as a threat to their system of choice or "hardcore gaming", they'll say what they think they need to. I'm not really that worried. There will always be a market for the hardcore gamers of each console. I'm actually hopeful that with such a big userbase the Wii will start to get a few more hardcore games released. Heck, it's only been a year, and already there are plenty of games worth playing. And the best one (Smash) hasn't even come out yet.

Hmm, well I guess this is good. As others have said, the GCN was seriously lagging behind the other systems of the generation in terms of sales. Now the Wii seems to be making up for it. Of course, it also helps that the Wii is fully backwards compatible with all GCN games.

Trying to group all Wii owners under one tag is foolish. "Slightly less neat," what's that about? Ultimately it should be at least a little bit good for all games if more people get into any kind of them in general.

We all buy what we want and can. Wasting time on "causal" v. I don't even know what is pointless, with how many different genres are out there for people to enjoy. There's no need to lump Brain Age, Nintendogs, Wii Sports, Metroid Prime or any other game into more categories, or at least don't expect profound results if you have to do it anyway.

There are a lot of people that only play specific kinds of games, like maybe sports games. If you're trying to overanalyze people's entertainment and put everyone all into two groups, you're probably not going to have anything interesting to add.

I have a Wii and a 360, haven't played the Wii as much lately but as long as everyone makes good games and you buy what you enjoy, it's pointless to have some kind of prejudice.

Do some of you post on other boards how much better Coke is than Pepsi, or take the time to say, "Pepsi is RC in a different can." Do you go to clothing boards and say "How could those casual imbeciles waste their time with different pants from what I have?" Fun is fun, and arguing about games takes time spent not playing fun games. I understand arguing about games or picking on different games is fun for some of you... whatever floats your boat!

Not hard to see it coming if you follow sales figures, but still mind blowing. Just a year ago at launch a lot of people were predicting Wii would actually have lower lifetime sales than the Gamecube... Even the most hardcore fans didn't seriously expect anything like this. No matter what happens from now on, it'll be near impossible to call Wii a failure. Of course it still has a ways to go to surpass worldwide GC sales, but it's pretty much inevitable at this point. Congratulations, Nintendo.

It's a tough guess if the Wii will surpass PS2 numbers, or if the Wii will die off in the next 2 or 3 years. This would still leave the Wii with a number two market share. The only thing that will push the We past PS2 numbers is if the price is slashed repeatedly. In two or three years we will see Wii's selling for $99.

In any case, it's the rise, or really the return, of the casual gamer to console gaming! I know so many people who are buying a Wii that haven't bought much less played a console since the NES. Granted, it's mostly for Wii Sports, but usually they'll pick up one or two more games. Then I bet a significant minority of those casual gamers will then go on to become a "hardcore" gamer and buy a 360 or PS3.

This is fascinating to me. I'll never understand why this thing is so popular. Motion controlled games are only interesting to me for like 15minutes. Mind you I will be buying a Wii someday for Galaxy when it drops in price. I'm not paying $250 for what is essentially a Gamecube with a new control interface. But I digress. Though, that's probably what people want these days is something quick that doesn't take much effort to get in to. Hence those EA Madden commercials for Wii with the old woman.
