She's a bit off in her timing, on the second listen. Mostly she's just playing quarter notes, which probably really helps make this even possible, but a couple of times you can catch her losing the rythym for a bit (hey, she's strumming a DS while holding it in her hand, and I'd guess that it'd be a lot easier to do this if it was mounted like a demo unit). On the plus side, while you can play the wrong chord, you can't play a chord wrong on the DS, where on a guitar pressing one string in the wrong place will usually sound somewhere between bad and very bad. But the down side is that being able to play a real instrument won't do jack for you on this, as like the Guitar Hero and Rock Star games (aside from the drums) it has very little to do with how the actual instruments are played.

Final judgement on her performance is that she's taking shallow breaths at all the wrong times, she might be singing a bit above her natural range (not entirely uncommon for women to think they should be singing soprano even though they have a tenor speaking voice), and she bobs her body from side to side to keep the rythym. But that's all technique, which is entirely teachable. The important thing is that while she doesn't have perfect pitch, she's also not tone-deaf. That's permanent, and no amount of training can fix it. I think that with a bit of quality vocal training she'd sound good enough to be in a church choir, and possibly even do a few solos.

Mmm, yes. Now _there's_ a voice (while they'd probably get more respect with a male singer, I doubt I ever would have started listening to them if it was anyone but her). Yes, she's hot, but she's got such a sensual voice that she could make a living by selling CDs of herself reading dictionary pages.

I found it odd the first time I heard her speak, I wasn't even aware she was Scottish until I saw an interview. It was a welcome surprise. Ah, but the accent won't always carry through into the singing. There's a hot Scottish redhead what goes by the name of Shirley who _never_ sounds at all Scottish when she's singing, but she's got a much stronger brogue than Kitt when she's talking.

It's not just British people. Aussies lose their accent as well. Mostly I think it has to do with the fact that the music industry has been tied into Hollywood for so long, and they've always shot for a neutral midwestern US accent because it's the easiest to understand. I think The Pogues still sound slightly Irish (though it helps that they have a number of songs that are sung in Gaelic), and I have a CD of Irish drinking songs that couldn't be mistaken for anything but Irish.

Anyone who has not tried Jam Sessions (well, *should*, but...) Anyone who has not tried Jam Sessions might not realize how difficult what she's done here actually is, for a number of reasons. Jam Sessions doesn't give you any rhythm cues (unless you turn on metronome, which she obviously hasn't), so unlike a traditional rhythm game, which drives the track and you just follow along; the timing when you are just jamming is totally up to you; not easy. Also, (and this is a design decision I question), You have to hold down the d-pad to select a chord, you can't press it and let go and have it remain on that chord until you press a different direction (they do this so that 'no direction' is a muted strum, but i'd give that up gladly for being able to 'toggle' the chords with the d-pad). On my DS Lite at least, it is very difficult to keep the d-pad pressed down in a single direction, it often 'rolls' to one of the diagonals, which then ruins the song you are playing. :(

Anyways, I think she did a fantastic job; and really proves out the point Tycho has been making the last few days about the convergence of games/musicality/technology/etc (though he is wrong about the Singularity) :)

The simple fact that so many gamers are so batshit in love (myself included) with this song makes it all the more odd that Portal isn't winning soundtrack awards. I mean, yeah yeah... Rock Band, Guitar Hero, sure... but there's an expectation of music in rhythm games that they have to meet, it's 90% of the plan.

Portal, more than rhythm games, made music important in a new way to game development. I'm just surprised that hasn't been worth more as we arrive at awards time.

Nothing against Guitar Hero and the like... but I see more innovation and value in adding to the shared language of games and gamers than I do in adding new instruments and more licensed music.

I toyed around with Jam Sessions a bit, and I think she did a pretty good job with this. It's harder than it looks. This song is WAY easier to play on a real guitar than it is with Jam Sessions.
