Dudes. I mean. NO ONE HAS NOTICED THAT, YOU KNOW, UNCHARTED IS ABOUT EL DORADO AND THE SPANISH CONQUERORS, AND THUS THAT'S WHY THE JOKE MESSAGE WAS WRITTEN IN SPANISH???????

Really, no one has realized that? Everyone complaying about it being racist? It's in english because of the actual game context: if it was set about finding the ruins of something related to Ancient Rome, the message would have been in Italian or in Latin.
No one has realized something as simple as that?

That is pretty funny, not offensive in the least. And I think that any weirdness us native spanish speakers sense in the wording of it may be derived from how different nationalities speak a differnt type of spanish. Some use words that seem strange to others, etc.

.....Ok so I speak spanish...no harm done...ppl who understand spanish may not notice anything those who do speak native spanish may find it different by the fact that in some countries the way of speech is different, this is spanish from Spain, if it was from my own country it will be like "Si esta leyendo esta lapida usted es un nerdo, deje la p*** pereza y levantese una vieja", and is Colombia, Columbia is in another location, too many around the globe not only the US. ;)

South Park used this same joke in the "N.A.M.B.L.A." episode, and the Simpsons have done it twice. But I guess it's only funny when you do it in English, right?

Also, where does Uncharted take place? According to the Plot they're looking for the lost city of El Dorado. Would that not have anything to do with the fact that the grave is in spansih, not any other language? I have not played it, but can anyone confirm/deny that this takes place in a spanish location or not.

He's not calling Spanish-speakers huge nerds, you pendejo, he's calling people that wander around video games observing each and every single detail in hopes of finding bugs/leftovers from early builds/etc. huge nerds. This is just a slightly more subtle way of doing it, inasmuch as most people playing probably don't speak Spanish, and therefore have to translate it before getting dissed.

it baffles me how seriously so many people take this. it's an easter egg. i don't think the programmer(s) who put it in really spent any time in considering that some subset of the gaming population might take such an offhand joke so seriously.

I personally believe that the choice of the Spanish language was really logical. When I set out my views on the wording of the phrase I was refering that if the "funny" message would have been better crafted, then all this misunderstanding would have been avoided =/

It's a fact that the correct use of grammar is what helps the one who writes and the one who reads to reach mutually understood. Apparently the people at Naughty Dog didn't realize that people tend to react without using their heads first. And I am talking about the heads that they have above their necks.

Still, I think Brian and many other posters may be reading too much into it, at least in regards to this being an insult towards the Spanish.
I received my copy of Uncharted today, so I'm not really sure, but isn't the action supposed to take place on an island filled with derelict colonial Spanish-style buildings? Therefore at some point inhabited by Spanish people? There you have it.

In Bioshock they used the surroundings to tell a story in a more organic fashion.
In Drake they use the surroundings to make fun of their core consumers. (Lets face it not many non-hardcore have a PS3 at the moment)

Please stop taking offense to everything. Sometimes, even if the joke isn't funny to you, it may be funny to others. Those who take offense to it probably are taking up for people that speak the language natively. People with their native language being Spanish (there are a lot of them) that happen to play videogames (there are a lot of them) will likely laugh at the easter egg and not take offense to it because they wont let something so dumb bother them.

Please quit making every little thing look terribly offensive when you have to business being offended by it. If its not funny to you then its offensive. Being the Spanish my native language, I can't help thinking that the sentence is poorly drafted. When you read it, it just feels awkward ... as if the people of Naugthy Dog had used a cheap-online-translator to generate the text that appears on that stone, or as if they had intentionally written it that way so that players can get a decent result when they put this text in a sad automatic translator =P. A more appropriate wording would be something like "Si tu estás leyendo esta piedra sepulcral eres un nerd enorme. Por favor consigue una vida y una novia" . Also... "piedra sepulcral"..? if they're thinking in "tombstone", then it's something more like "lápida" =/

@doobiwan, and all of you who are complaining that they're mocking Spanish speakers: Who cares what language it's in? It's mocking the fact that you stopped to read it, not that you can read some language other than English.

Let's say they put it in Latin as doobiwan suggested...now you've offended all the scholars who happen to know Latin. How about Chinese? Oops, there we go again. Portuguese? Nope. The list goes on and on. You can't include everybody.

Based on the locale in Uncharted, a spanish tombstone makes the most sense. And just the fact that you stopped to read what (according to that picture) appears to be quite illegible, and furthermore translate it, makes you a nerd.

And for that, you should be proud. Not ashamed, or angry.

I'd say this shows some lack of interest in the part of the programmers. If you are going to put an Easter Egg at least do some work in it, don't get a lame message and machine-translate it into incorrect Spanish.
I think the idea behind the joke is actually quite good for non-spanish speakers, since as some of you have pointed out here, it would imply the reader to spend some time translating. The bad part is that its target is very narrow. Most south-american countries and Spain will not find it a joke since it's not correctly written in either of their local version of spanish (and don't get me started on the untranslated nerd), so they'll see the joke, but fail to see the fun in it.
It seems like they had this cool idea then nobody wanted to actually do any work on it, so they got some crappy machine-translator. The "get a life" bit has no direct translation in most of the spanish-speaking countries I know of.
Plus really, spanish has not changed that much since Drake's time, so if you are going to put something written in spanish, at least do it in classic spanish, even if you are going to put the word nerd in. Either that or use Latin as many of you here have said.

That's awesome.

Sounds a bit like the certificate you get when you get one of the best fishing poles in Final Fantasy XI; requires you to catch 10,000 of this one particular fish. Not especially hard, but definitely time consuming.

The certificate says something along the lines of "The bearer of this certificate has been determined to have no life. We strongly suggest some exercise and fresh air for the ongoing wellbeing of their person."

I think the certificate you got in Pokémon for catching all 150 types said much the same thing.

I get the joke. But its a stupid joke. What's mildly offensive is that who ever put that in there assumes that their audience is not a spanish speaker, or literate in spanish, and would have to look it up. Considering a game that's getting a North American release, the assumption is spot on, save for the significant percentage of gamers that are literate in spanish.

This sort of lamery begs for real writers and creative people to become more involved with all aspects of game design, including its silly easter eggs.

Okay, now, yeah, I get the implied insult of 'some people get too much into the game, even going so far as to read level-art.' So why not just put it in English, then? The act of putting the text in Spanish sends the message that gamers in the United States, or wherever else this version appears, don't speak Spanish, and the only ones who would read the message are those who are trying too hard.

Which isn't true, because like half the nation speaks Spanish, so it is a backhanded insult. Not one saying 'you are nerds,' but 'you aren't in our gaming demographic profile,' which is worse. Ask some gaming-chicks. As other commenters have said, Latin would have been a better choice.

I think this could be lost on everyone who has not actually seen this IN GAME. Yes reading this on a website does not make it funny. If you had seen it in game and Translated it then I think theres at least a slightly higher chance it might get a laugh. This is aimed at the type of user that Pokes around looking at the small details. (ADHOC perhaps?) Something one does when they are interested in finding things they wouldn't normally see-(not for everyone) I cant tell you how much I loved finding the "No easter egg here" sign on top of a bridge in GTA san and.
