To all those who are under the misconception that this is some kind of investigative news site, please look for that else where.

If your reading something here, it is because it is news somewhere else. They aggregate, they comment. They have gotten so good at it sometimes they get tips.

It makes no sense to complain when they see a bit a news, repost, and comment, then.. oh my gawd, update us as the story progresses.

Pereira has answered at his forum and sent it to Kotaku. since it hasn't been posted yet and i think that he deserves to be listened i've translated it and i'm posting it now:

Of course it is always easier to believe in the person who has more credibility. And Dan Hsu has MUCH more than I do. But I say sincerely that he is not telling the truth. I have never admitted invading anything,because i did not invaded anything. Do you really think EGM would have given the password for a simple freelancer who writes 2 pages per month for the magazine, and hasn't visitted the publisher's site since three months ago? They will continue accusing me until they discover which was the source that leaked. I only hope they apologise when everything becomes clear, as with this comment from Hsu, the entire Internet was against me. That's not fair. As I said yesterday, "the mega corporations always wins in the end." I do not want to argue with them, but I do not think it is cool go out there saying lies.
I do not know if Shoe said that because he wanted, or if someone passed a wrong information to him, but I do not think it is nice to say these things. Of course, I am suspect since i've written some articles for EGM ,but,sometimes two plus two is five.

Why is everyone, or a lot of people anyway, jumping on the backs of those who previously defended the guy--is it wrong to want to believe someone's story is true? If a woman says she's been raped by some known personage should we assume she's lying?

That's not right!

Somethings wrong with that frame of thought. Those who defended the guy wanted to believe what he said was true, not just because he was "the little guy," but because we've seen how those with money go out to crush those who stand up to them.

In the end, however, it looks as though we were lied to, and that being the case, he's lost whatever support he had. Shame.

In an industry were journalistic ethics are about as well-founded as the Titanic's hull after an iceberg EGM's outrage is a bit hollow. This is, after all, homoerotic screencaps of Ryu, not the Pentagon Papers.

Sure, it SHOULD NOT have happened and hopefully that freelancer is gone. Kotaku should've dug a bit deeper before posting the story. At least should've given EGM/1Up a chance to comment or no comment.

But -- Kotaku didn't get it wrong; they got half of the story, and then they posted the other half in a straight up manner. Kotaku should've done better, but they weren't out to to somehow just destroy 1UP. They were doing their jobs as journalist, chasing a story.

Which is more than EGM or 1UP would do in a lot of cases.

It looks as if much of this his gone from Kotaku making a seemingly, and I say 'seemingly' because it's still he said/she said with nothing confirmed, unprofessional presumption to a digital vs print discussion, so I'll toss in my few cents.

For me anyway, I enjoy being able to utilize both mediums, each has their own advantages and shortcomings. Call me old fashioned, but if I'm traveling on a bus or an airplane I'd much rather have a printed document I can thumb through eaisly as opposed having to fiddle with a laptop or, lord-forbid, reading it on the screen of a tiny iPhone or PDA.

I love Kotaku and 1Up/EGM, and along with Joystiq, make up my sources for videogame information. Kotaku is only guilty of being being overzealous trying to garner support against something they truly believed as an injustice. And if you put it all into context, at the end of the day, this wasn't "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" that the Chicago Daily Tribune printed after the 1948 Presidential Election.

It's not so negligent as it was misinformed, besides, who wouldn't be moved to action when a gigantic corporation is apparently threatening doom upon a smaller entity; it's just human nature.

He said that he doesn't know if Hsu said those things on purpouse or if he received a wrong information about the case. He finished saying he sent you guys this same text he wrote on the forum, and is waiting for you to publish it.

@minus_273: They won't take stories down, I've can't recall ever seeing story taken down on Gawker media site. Even the "tubgirl" pic story was just moved back in time. They do overstrike incorrect parts and make updates, but not a word has been deleted. I don't know if it has something to do with how the writers are paid, but I think it's a very good practice. Keep the whole history intact and people can verify the events instead of covering stuff up like nothing had ever happened.

Hey I read most of that blog post you linked to. Thanks for that. However I stopped reading it because I couldn't get over the whiny tone. Geeezus. I really think EGM is miffed because they're realizing that online journalism is trumping print these days. That and their magazine (and just about every other print game magazine) has sucked for ages and the new Street Fighter, in my opinion, looks awful as well. I think they knew the hype they could build for this game would be worth more than the actual merits of game itself.

They need to just bite the bullet and realize it's nothing personal, it's just a change in the way information flows these days. And I don't think that's a bad thing at all!

Kotaku, I stick by you and I don't really think you did anything wrong by printing what you knew at the time. This is a videogame blog, not the BBC.

You guys really think this whole fiasco has been blown out of proportion? You're talking about a magazine that has 12 times a year to make direct profits. People work for these companies, many of which whom I presume have a passion for what they do, and support themselves on probably lower than expected wages to do so. It's no news - journalism is a tough industry. Getting back to the issue at hand though, 1 out of the 12 times a year, EGM could make a good break in sales but has potentially been short changed by an individual who has leaked parts of a major cover story. As far as I can see, this whole thing hasn't even tipped the iceberg in terms of being an overkill. Yeah I've no doubt EGM will survive. But in the shoes of the general EGM staff, I would be pissed right now that a very good month of sales right before Christmas could be turned into a very mediocre month. Not exactly a great way to be celebrating coming up into the holiday season. And the leaker, nice going in being a killjoy en masse.

I´m very disappointed. Even though I´m a die hard brazilian street fighter fan I don´t think that the guy was right. He is wrong and deserves to be punished. But to all the haters out there, don´t punish a whole country and it´s citizens just because they were born there.

The ironic thing about this situation is Ziff has been NOTORIOUS for leaking exclusive info either via a different magazine within the Ziff family or on 1UP. Don't remember if much was made of this outside of the industry itself, but Ziff leaked their God of War 2 exclusive (planned for OPM) in a different magazine (can't remember which... I think EGM) a month before the OPM story was to go to press.

I don't support the guy for jacking Ziff's screens in the same way I don't support Ziff constantly leaking out info either. For them to question someone else's integrity is kind of like the pot calling the kettle black.

Information is withheld all the time. Generally for print, but it occurs online as well. You've seen it here on Kotaku when one of the guy's posts something to the effect of "I just played the game, but will tell you about it Monday."

It isn't a bribery deal either. The publication who obeys the embargo gets access to early information again in the future. The publication that doesn't, never gets invited to see an early game again. There's nothing in the relationship that MANDATES a positive review or preview.

Secondly, EGM's parent company is very big and publishes magazines around the world. There is an EGM Brazil that is published in portuguese. In fact, if you had bothered to even read the post before you started responding with your misinformation, its mentioned right there is Hsu's response!

I know its too much to hope for, but please at least read the @!#?@! article before you post about it.

I'll avoid pointing out the obvious fact that everybody and anybody who chose to side with the "little guy" in the previous post looks like a complete hypocrite, and choose to point out a much less obvious fact, which is this:

It doesn't matter whether or not Douglas Pereira stole the photos and information from Ziff Davis, because whether he stole them or not he has no integrity. None. 0%. If integrity were HP, he would need a Phoenix Down.

How Douglas attained those photos and that information is irrelevant, but for argument's sake let's delve a little. Let's assume, for a moment, that he didn't steal that information. Well, if he didn't steal it, how did he get it? Maybe he was walking down the street and a bird perched itself on his shoulder and dropped a thumb drive containing the information in his pocket. Or, more likely, somebody else stole it.
So did that make it okay? Apparently so, judging from the scores of comments left on the previous post regarding this issue. Something tells me that Ziff Davis wasn't passing the Street Fighter IV photos out on the street, so that means that somebody stole them, and Douglas became the proprietor of the stolen goods.

But, like I said before, it is completely irrelevant how the photos and information were obtained, because the real issue here is Douglas Pereira's complete lack of integrity. He claimed that it was his duty as a "journalist" to share the photos and information with the masses, because he is true friend of the working man, and he recycles, and he drives a Prius and whatever other bullshit you choose to believe about the guy.
The truth is that he knew, from the moment he had his proverbial hands on this scoop, Ziff Davis had exclusive coverage of the Street Fighter IV premier, and that he probably shouldn't have possession of the material he obtained, for a number of ethical and legal reasons. But the thing about Douglas is that he didn't care about any of that. He really didn't give a shit. It's a common symptom of having no integrity.

I would liken his actions to those of a the paparazzi that endlessly stalk celebrities and take photos of them during their most private moments. Are they breaking the law? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Are they doing their job, doing what they get paid to do? If you ask them, yes, that's exactly what they're doing. And that's all fine and good, but does that make it okay? Of course not. Photographing someone without their knowledge or consent during a private moment requires a complete lack of integrity, which is fine if you're a reporter I suppose. For the rest of us regular folk though, it makes you complete shit.

And that is exactly what Douglas Pereira is. A shit.

He knew that he wasn't supposed to leak those photos before the latest EGM issue was released, but he didn't care. He's not the only one who had access to those photos and that information by the way. There's plenty of employees over at Ziff Davis who have access to lots of photos and information that they could easily sell to the highest bidder, if they were so inclined. The reason why they don't sell any of the exclusive information probably has something to do with their fear of being canned, but I'd like to think it has more to do with the fact that they have integrity, and have respect for the people and businesses involved in the monumental story.

Douglas Pereira, on the other hand, chose to be a shit.

Glad to get the truth behind the situation. I feel very happy that I qualified my reply in the other thread:

Looks like I nailed the source of the leak, too! Guess I just didn't expect that it would be the editor of the site himself.

Still, as I said, it's great that we got the truth behind the matter quickly and professionally. If only another large gaming site, which shall not be named, had done the same regarding a recent scandal...

EGM didn't happen to peek through Capcom's windows and take the pictures, nor did they corner a Capcom staffer and force them to spill the beans and images.

Capcom allowed them the story and gave them the screens and probably told them exactly when they could release them, which would be when the print EGM is released.

Exclusives like this are the only thing that print magazines have left anymore, with 1 to 2 month lead times required, most of the "news" they have is out of date by the time the magazine arrives in mailboxes.

nowadays in exchange for "exclusive" details game publications won't say a bad thing about a game or developer. It's a symbiotic relationship that benifits them more than the reader. This is why I think 1up and their kind suck and a reason why I read kotaku. If kotaku ever crosses to the dark side then I'll move on I guess.
